Kayla Occupysandiego Anna Ward just reported...
San Diego Civic Center / Freedom Plaza:
SDPD officer stated that the directive given to them today is that NOTHING can be set on the ground. Even if its right next to you, and no warnings will be given. "Pro-active" arrests will be done. This directive comes from the "top". We were told to contact Asst police chief Boyd Long -who is on vacation- if we object. Yet... the police are not harassing citizens who are not occupiers and set items on the ground there.

THIS IS IMPORTANT because it means we should likely resubmit the TRO for review. The Police are going way overboard on this!

[SDCPJ] Jan 5 - "A Common Humanity" & conversation with author

The PRC is part of the leadership of "Friends of Friendship Park," which is co-hosting this event below...

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Lee Van Ham <lee@jubilee-economics.org>
Date: Wed, Dec 28, 2011 at 10:09 AM
Subject: invitation to event with author

Please come for a conversation with Lane Van Ham about his book

A Common Humanity:

Ritual, Religion, and Immigrant Advocacy in Tucson, Arizona

released recently by the University of Arizona Press.

We'll have Q&A time after Lane presents a few themes and stories from his book.  His continuing work on the great creativity and innovation happening on the borders, along with the border's impacts in our region, will make for an interesting evening together. Lane talks about how the borders are spaces where we innovate who we see ourselves being as both citizens of a country and of the world, plus what it means to be truly human amid dynamics of borders. Beyond the issue of how borders test who we are, his book deals with how the impacts of globalization, economics, and the dynamics of business, religion, and family push toward trans-national structures. The importance of ritual, religious language, love of country, love of humans — all come into play — as do the need for jobs, livelihoods with dignity, family, healthy bioregions, and 1st and 3rd World economies.

7:00 p.m.

Thursday, January 5, 2012

Co-sponsored by Jubilee Economics Ministries and Friends of Friendship Park

Copies of the book will be available (if the U of A Press and shipping cooperate during these holidays) for purchase and signing.

Please indicate your intent to attend by email to lee@jubilee-economics.org or leave a message at 619-528-8075. Your response will make hosting MUCH easier.  Please bring any family or friends not included in the circulation of this invitation.

Where?

Hosted by Friends of Friendship Park and Jubilee Economics Ministries at 3295 Meade Ave. in the building of the Christ United Methodist Church.  (Use the southside entrance.)

Freedom Plaza UPDATE:
So another successful night at Freedom Plaza; after the Swing-watch SDPD Commandos were re-leaved by the compassionate Mid-watch SDPD officers. The two officers on Christmas night were polite, non-demanding, and respected the Occupiers at Freedom Plaza. Instead of demanding Occupiers to mind their space, the two SDPD officers respected and asked politely to comply with city ordnance's that were in violation. The night went smooth, hassle free, and only spot-checked by SDPD when required. May God Bless those with compassion. — with Alan Riner and 3 others.

Occupy Update!

During the first week of our occupation... we didn't know how good we had it. Food table at the far side of the plaza, medical tent to the right of the picture, art in the middle of this picture. The tents shown here represent about 1/3 of the tents in the plaza. The encampment was sanitary and safe. Our sanitation committee picked up the trash twice a day. Fed hundreds of homeless by the food committee. Never forget it!

  • Media committee sponsored a teach-in on foswiki (free open source wiki) which is used by the Citizens Oversight web site (this site).
    • Will be archiving historical media. If you have any videos, etc. please consider sending them in and/or learning to catalog them yourself.
    • Contact raylutz@citizensoversight.org if you want to be added to the team to help.
    • More teach-ins will be scheduled in the future. Still need a good place to do this. Panera Bread is our best option for the downtown area. Need wifi and large enough for projector and screen would help.
    • Will be starting a project to list all arrested persons, their court date, etc. and a police ids and mug shots database. Each incident (raid, for example) can include who was arrested and police involved. Will also include a database of complaints. The more organized we are the harder it will be for the police to abuse our rights.
  • Demands Committee met and will be placing various documents from various sources that list demands on the project page.
    • Terms will be defined: Demands, issues, goals, tactics, strategies, solutions so we can use these correctly. Ray Lutz will provide a paper on this.
    • Each member of Demands Committee will summarize and present each demands document.
    • Will collect demands for each issue and then proposed teach-ins and discussions on each one.
    • Direct Action committee may find ideas for action related to each issue.
  • From report at the GA, direct action committee discussed actions to highlight banking irregularities.
  • Don't forget: we have a unified Calendar for Occupy San Diego! It can be found here: Occupy San Diego Calendar. Events are added to Occupy San Diego Events so they appear on the calendar and in this email blast.

Hope we all had a very Merry Christmas.
