[SDCPJ] Tribe attempts to evict private military contractor Los Coyotes Band in a legal standoff with Blackwater-tied company

From Sept. 28, 2011 SD City Beat, by David Maass

An American Indian tribe in San Diego County has been engaged in a four-month standoff with a military contractor that refuses to leave its reservation, according to documents recently filed in U.S. District Court.

The story begins in 2010, when the Eagle Rock Training Center (ERTC), a private military training facility established by a former Blackwater executive, signed a 25-year lease agreement to conduct high-level combat training on land near Warner Springs owned by the Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeño Indians. The land approximated the terrain of Afghanistan, and ERTC hoped to train soldiers and law-enforcement officers in everything from explosives to combat-driving techniques. The camp would also function as a location for film and television productions.

But since June, Los Coyotes—a tribe of about 300 members—has been trying to boot the company off its land, claiming the lease was never valid. The conflict has since escalated to a series of showdowns, which ERTC alleges led to the arson that caused the 14,000-acre Eagle fire in July.

7:30-9:00    "... and the echo follows"
Author/photographer Nic Paget-Clarke will present his new book "... and the echo follows" The presentation includes a talk with photos and discussion.

What the book is about:

Asking the question, "What is the connection between food and democracy?" raises a lot of other questions. Some of the answers invalidate many of the myths of our assumed knowl- edge. Other answers describe the history and experience of a different understanding.

What is the Green Revolution? What is food sovereignty? What is the verticalization of agriculture? What is agroecol- ogy? Is "free trade" free? Where did this economic mess come from? Is a democracy a vote for who? Is land identity? What has art got to do with it? Do I care?

Surprising to some, well-understood by others, many of the answers are available for both discussion and practice. Mil- lions of women and men, farmers, indigenous people, and peasants are creating autonomous movements with self- sustaining social and economic relations.

They are movements, people of dignity.

[SDCPJ] Official press release from "Occupy San Diego", in support of "Occupy Wall Street"

Occupy San Diego

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:
Kayla Ward or Kali Katt
949-480-4229 / 619-916-1304
Organizing & Media Groups

Occupy Wall Street Spreads to San Diego October 7

SAN DIEGO-Occupy San Diego is standing in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street in NYC, and will begin a peaceful civil disobedience protest of the global financial corruption currently invading politics, media and corporations, by occupying an open space in the Gaslamp District indefinitely starting on October 7, 2011 at 4:30 pm.

We will peacefully and permanently occupy a space until a list of our demands, that will be in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street in NYC, are met by the City and County of San Diego, and by the Federal Government.

The long term and overnight occupation will include marching, teach-ins, sit-ins, break out groups and vigils for Troy Davis, a young, black man on death row, recently put to death by the state of Georgia.

We will also be reaching out to existing political activist groups and labor unions in the San Diego community to stand in solidarity with us.

Since San Diego is one of many hubs of military activity in our country, we will stand in solidarity with the American troops, who are pawns of the system, and a part of the 99% of the American people, manipulated by Wall Street and the 1%. A very large number of veterans in San Diego, and around the country, remain unemployed after returning from service in current wars, and they are encouraged to join our occupation demonstration.

Occupy San Diego will begin holding General Assembly meetings in preparation for this demonstration beginning September 27 at 6pm at the Martin Luther King Promenade Park across from the Convention Center Trolley Station, located at 5th Ave. at N Harbor Drive in downtown San Diego.  Meetings will commence here daily until the permanent occupation on October 7.

About Occupy San Diego:
Only 1% of people in this country own and control a majority of the wealth, and this power has invaded into all aspects of our life  -  politics, media and corporations. We are the 99% and we will be quiet about this inequality no longer.  We will take back for the people, what already belongs to the people  -  our country. For more information about Occupy San Diego visit www.occupysandiego.organd for more information about Occupy Wall Street please visit www.occupywallst.org

(The San Diego site is currently feeding the Occupy Los Angeles site.)

[SDCPJ] Occupy San Diego

There will be a meeting Tuesday of people in San Diego in support of "Occupy Wall Street". This is the beginnings of an "Occupy San Diego" group. Many cities around the country and around the world are joining the Occupy Wall Street actions. All SDCPJ supporters are encouraged to attend and to lend their support.

Hello friends!

I hope this little note finds you well! I would like to pass on this information to you regarding an amazing forum on women and media sponsored by the Joan Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (IPJ) that will take place at the University of San Diego Oct 5-7, 2011. Attached is a flyer with all the info!

In addition, as many of you know, I am working as a Peace Writer with the IPJ's Women's PeaceMaker Program and am working with Dr. Rashas Zaydan of Iraq in writing her life story. Dr. Zaydan is a remarkable woman and humanitarian from Baghdad and will be speaking on campus at the IPJ Theatre on Thursday October 13, from 1 to 2 pm. She will also be speaking on a panel with all of the Women PeaceMakers at the same location this Thursday, September 29th from 7-9 pm . For more information, please click here:

In addition, Dr. Zaydan  will be in the area until November 5th and would like to connect with as many people and organizations as possible while she is here. She is available for discussions, classroom presentations and speaking engagements. You can contact me to begin with for these engagements.

Please join us if you can and spread the word about these exciting events. If you are out of the SoCal area, please pass it on to your Southern California friends!

Many blessings,

Nikki Lyn Pugh (aka Lyn-Li Torres Pugh)

PS The PeaceMaker women are also looking for low-cost and/or free holistic services like massage, reiki, reflexology, etc. They especially welcome women practitioners and those who are okay with a clothes-on approach...and if you are willing to come to the USD campus even better! The PM women have been on the front lines of many battles for peace in their communities and are for the first time in many years, taking a needed break here in San Diego. If you are a holisitic health practitioner and would like to help give these women some extra love and healing energy, we appreciate you! Please contact me if you are available.

[SDCPJ] Consultation on women, peace and security with Susan Braden, U.S. Dept. of State

If you are interested in attending this event, please contact Anne Hoiberg, whose information is at the bottom of this page.

Women's International League for Peace and Freedom

Dear Carol,

The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice invite you and your colleagues to participate in a consultation with Susan Braden, a senior official from the U.S. Department of State, who is scheduled to visit our community to LISTEN to our concerns about women, peace and security:

                        Saturday, October 8, 2011, 1:00 – 4:00 P.M.

Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice

In October 2000, the U.N. Security Council adopted Resolution 1325 which urges governments to include women in all aspects of peacemaking, peacebuilding and peacekeeping--and to create a National Action Plan for implementing U.N. SCR 1325. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton made a historic commitment to advance the status of women by developing a plan to implement this U.N. resolution. She has tasked her department and other agencies to draft a U.S. NAP and to seek input from civil society. Of importance to the State Department is to hear from us concerning the issues of immigration, violence against women, political participation of women, protection of women in armed services against sexual and gender-based violence, situation of refugee women, border considerations, human trafficking, small arms control, health care, environmental justice, implications of war and militarization on women in our community, costs of war and caring for veterans, etc.

The consultation on October 8th will be a three-hour session, including a presentation on U.N. SCR 1325, facilitated break-out sessions, statements from civil society representatives, and a report back to Ms. Braden. U.S. WILPF will provide a facilitator and recorder/note taker. Through this opportunity, it is hoped that the U.S. SCR 1325 NAP will NOT become a tool to make war safe for women, but will serve to advance the status of women and prevent future wars.

I hope that you and your colleagues can participate in this consultation (RSVP at ahoiberg@aol.com). If you wish to discuss this further, I can be reached at 858.245.1677 (cell) or 619.223.8074 (office).

Warm regards,

Anne

WILPF Consultation Coordinator

About the film:
THE U.S. vs JOHN LENNON
Filmmakers David Leaf and John Scheinfeld offer a compelling look at the efforts of the United States government to silence one of rock & roll's most outspoken war critics in this documentary detailing the Vietnam-era struggle between the Richard Nixon administration and iconic peace activist John Lennon.

The Vietnam War was raging and the nightly news was filled with stories of failed offensives and massacred U.S. troops. As anti-war protests back home gained momentum, it was the hopeful voice of former Beatle Lennon that served to perfectly encapsulate the frustrations felt by many citizens that the U.S. had gotten caught up in an quagmire from which there was seemingly no end in sight.

There's a high price to be paid for standing strong in your beliefs and openly criticizing the ruling elite, though, and now, through interviews with those who knew him best and revealing glimpses into an era where all hope seemed lost, filmmakers finally uncover the truth behind the Nixon administration's highly classified efforts to isolate and eventually deport the man whose powerful words threatened to actually make sense in a world slowly suffocated by the grip of insanity. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

[SDCPJ] "Women, War and Peace" 5-part series on PBS

"Women, War & Peace" on PBS

"Women, War & Peace" will premiere on your local PBS station Tuesday nights from Oct. 11 to Nov. 8, 2011. In San Diego, it will air at 11 p.m.

Women, War & Peace is a bold new five-part PBS television series challenging the conventional wisdom that war and peace are men's domain. The vast majority of today's conflicts are not fought by nation states and their armies, but rather by informal entities: gangs and warlords using small arms and improvised weapons. The series reveals how the post-Cold War proliferation of small arms has changed the landscape of war, with women becoming primary targets and suffering unprecedented casualties. Yet they are simultaneously emerging as necessary partners in brokering lasting peace and as leaders in forging new international laws governing conflict. With depth and complexity, Women, War & Peace spotlights the stories of women in conflict zones from Bosnia to Afghanistan and Colombia to Liberia, placing women at the center of an urgent dialogue about conflict and security, and reframing our understanding of modern warfare.

[SDCPJ] "Women, Media, Revolution" Forum Oct. 5 to 7

"WOMEN, MEDIA, REVOLUTION" FORUM

SAN DIEGO, CA: From October 5 to October 7, the University of San Diego's Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice will host "Women, Media, Revolution," a free public forum of films and panels exploring the perceptions of women reporting on and from conflict zones and how gender plays at all levels of coverage.

International panelists include traditional print and television journalists, alternative media network founders, bloggers and other social media contributors, as well as film directors capturing the challenges to the security and treatment of women in conflict situations like this year's Arab Spring. They will share their work for media outlets like Al Jazeera, NPR, The Guardian, The Times (London), and World Pulse, and the challenges of reporting and filmmaking in countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia.

Films including "Weapon of War," "The Sari Soldiers," and "The Price of Sex" will be screened followed by discussion with the directors.

Journalists will address questions such as:

Where are the women pictured with cell phones and posters during the uprisings now? What happens to reporters, their stories, their subjects, and citizens caught in conflict? Where does balanced and inclusive coverage come from, if corporate media does not cover stories about women and their role in changing societies?

One of the panels will include global reporters and young journalists linked via videoconference- ing from the sites where they are currently assigned and/or living. Women PeaceMakers from Haiti, India, Iraq and Kenya, who are in residence at the Institute for eight weeks, will respond in the final session to issues raised at the forum.

For the schedule of films and panel discussions with directors, producers, journalists, bloggers and the Women PeaceMakers, go to
http://peace.sandiego.edu/womenmediarevolution.

The Women Peacemakers Program is funded by the Fred J. Hansen Foundation. "Women, Media, Revolution" partners include Acting Together, Fork Films, Global Press Institute, International Center for Journalists, New Narratives, San Diego Asian Rilm Festival, The WIP, Ushahidi, WAVE India, Women in Media & News, Women Make Movies, Women's International News Gathering Service (WINGS), and World Pulse.

and at 6:15pm we will march around the corner to the Hall of Justice on West Broadway. We will chant for a while at Hall of Justice till 6:45pm and then turn on State Street back to Horton Plaza Mall for Speak-out and Candlelight Vigil for the remainder of the evening.

FOR THE RALLY/MARCH AND CANDLELIGHT VIGIL
Pls bring multiple signs, candles, blank posterboards and markers to help make signs while we are there.

WE WILL ALSO BE PASSING OUT COMMUNITY GROUND RULES TO HELP MAINTAIN A RADICAL SOCIAL JUSTICE SPACE FREE FROM OPPRESSIVE RACIST, CLASSIST, SEXIST, HOMOPHOBIC, TRANSPHOBIC, ABELIST, ADULTIST, AGEIST, AND ETC. BEHAVIORS.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO ANYONE WHO MAY BE INTERESTED IN JOINING THE COALITION AND INTERESTED IN ATTENDING.

OTHER ADDITIONS:
For your own local communities, campuses, schools, place of worship, friends, family, homes, business etc.. - we are asking you to mobilize in your own communities between the hours of 4:00-6:00 pm - (this will be at the same time as Georgia State's time of execution for Troy Davis) and then if possible to meet the coalition at Horton Plaza Mall at 6:00 pm.

However, your support can be done in multiple ways such as in the form of making phone calls to judge Penny Freesemann 912-652-7252 urging her to withdraw the death warrant against Troy Davis.

We have one more day to stop this execution, and we're not giving up. You should continue to take action from wherever you are:

1. Email and call the Board of Pardons and urge them to reconsider: 404-656-5651.

2. Contact the Chatham County District Attorney and urge him to withdraw Troy's death warrant: phone: 912-652-7308, fax: 912-652-7328.

3. Contact CorrectHealth and call for a general strike of all execution personnel – doctors, nurses, and guards should stay home tomorrow. Urge them not to participate in this travesty of justice: Phone: 770-692-4750; Fax: 770-692-4754 Email CorrectHealth, the "medical" company set to oversee #TroyDavis execution: CARLO.MUSSO@CORRECTHEALTH.ORG

[SDCPJ] Blackwater video game

Just when you think that you can't be surprised by anything: Blackwater Video Game! Developed in close collaboration with former Blackwater agents and under the direction of the company's founder Erik Prince "to ensure accuracy of moves, gestures and gameplay."

In stark contrast to the company's real-world record, Prince told CNN that the Blackwater video game incorporates "timeless themes of courage, good vs. evil and war."

Prince is such an expert on these topics; my disgust knows no bound

[SDCPJ] We have reached a settlement!!!

By this, I assume Maribel means the UFCW has a tentative agreement which will have to be ratified by the membership.  But this does sound like really good news and a testament to the tenacity of this union and supporters.

Fred

Hi Fellow Brothers and Sisters,

I/we would like to thank EVERYONE who has supported the Grocery Workers as well as our staff within the past few months by adopting a store(s).  As of now we have reached settlement in our contract.  YOU helped us avoid a strike by showing your support and attending various rallies with us.  Our voices were heard with ALL of your support.

Thanks,
Maribel De La Torre

[SDCPJ] Urgent Support Grocery Store Workers -- TOMORROW!

Please pass this on widely! It is urgent that we are loud and rowdy and apply pressure. Negotiations will be going on and the more support we show for workers, the more likely the corporations will negotiate fairly. I know people have a lot of plans for tomorrow, but please try to stop by for half an hour and bring friends!!!!!

Friends and Allies - Brothers and Sisters:
UFCW has given their 72-hour strike notice to Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons.  They plan to continue to bargain until Sunday at 7 p.m.  While we hold out hope that these final hours will produce a fair contract, we need to remind these Fortune 500 companies that we stand with and support the grocery workers.
Please support the 62,000 grocery workers from Santa Barbara to San Ysidro who face a looming strike.  Join UFCW Local 135 and the Labor Council as we stand in solidarity with their workers while they fight for a fair contract that maintains their health care benefits.
Protect Grocery Store Workers!
Rally - Saturday, 9 a.m.

[SDCPJ] Fw: Puppy Stars Protest Sunday 9/25

Puppy Stars Protest: Round Three!
SUNDAY September 25, 2011
Puppy Stars puppy store
6167 Balboa Ave.
Clairemont
12 Noon - 2 PM
Meet on Balboa Ave. in front of the store.
Bring water, friends, signs:

Shame on Puppy Stars!
Boycott Puppy Stars
Puppy Stars:
What Are You Hiding?
Missouri Pups
at Puppy Stars
Honk to close puppy mills!

Our protests are perfectly legal
and are protected by our first amendment rights.
Dogs are farmed as livestock at unlicensed kennels as well as under the jurisdiction of the US Department of Agriculture. The primary objective is to maximize profits and to do that,
the dogs need to suffer terribly. Hungry. Thirsty. Mange. Matted hair. Dirty. Injuries without treatment. Often brutally debarked. Physical and mental abuse and neglect. Puppies in Puppy Stars are coming from facilities in Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio. These are some of the worst puppy mill states in the country, filled with breeding kennels of up to 1,000 dogs.
Is that OK with you? We didn't think so.
Join us to tell Puppy Stars: We don't want another puppy store in San Diego. Stop selling puppies or "go humane" and turn your store into a legitimate center for rescues.

Please remember we also need you to make calls, write letters and send messages.
See information on our website:
Thanks for all you do to help these prisoners of greed!

SDCPJ DECISION-MAKING PROCESS:

As a coalition, the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice is comprised of people from a wide variety of social, political, ideological, and cultural backgrounds. In order to come to decisions that encompass the diversity of opinions in our group, we work with a modified consensus model. At times, the process can feel tedious. It is up to each of us to minimize tediousness by avoiding repetition of points already voiced and recognizing that consensus does not necessarily mean that we discuss everything until everyone present agrees on every detail. The facilitator may wrap up a topic about which there are differences simply by asking if the group can accept a dominant position, even though some people still disagree. The goal of consensus is to come to decisions with which everyone is comfortable. This allows us to maintain as broad a base as possible and to not alienate any of our members.

Saturday 9/10

Just back from a planning meeting for 10/15 called by Education for All.

There were about 20 people at the meeting, including several from SDCPJ (Gabe, Josh, Hilary, Nikolai, me).  About half ot the attendees were students from City College - others from SDSU, UCSD, Cuyamaca.

We decided to organize an event around the slogans of "Stop the Cuts - End the Wars - Tax the Rich".  Of course, we are free to add addtional demands in our own name.

Gabe brought 1000 SDCPJ fliers for 10/15, and we handed out most of them for people to redistribute.

So far no specfics for the event itself.  This should be discussed at the next planning meeting, which will be on Saturday, Sept 17, 12 noon, at City College lawn, Park Blvd and B Street.  We decided to try to spread the word as widely as possilbe this week, to build for the planning meeting on 9/17.

This should be an important meeting.  In addtion to deciding on the nature of the event itself, we will make plans for outreach and media.  I hope this will be on the agenda for the next SDCPJ meeting on 9/12.

I will not be at either the 9/12 or 9/17 meeting, since I will be out of town  9/11 - 9/17 (going hiking over Bishop Pass in the Sierras with my daughter).
