[SDCPJ] Upcoming networking luncheon on 7/21/10

We are about to celebrate the three month anniversary of the Gulf Oil Disaster just as BP is succeeding in tapping the well that blew in April.  In keeping with like gatherings around the country this week, we are looking forward toa meeting at 12 Noon on Wed.,7/21/10, that is aligned with the organizations and networks which came together in re "Earth is For People, Not Corporations," on 7/01/10 in San Diego , at the 1st UU Church of S.D.

Whether or not Marjorie can make it, I would like to invite you tho this Potluck Luncheon from 12 Noon to 1:30, on Wednesday, 7/21/10, at the Linda Vista Community Center, 2750 Wheatstone Ave., San Diego , CA 92111 .

There, we will ask you to present a little bit about your organization's plans in the near term and what types of help you will need in order to carry them out.  We would also like to know what knowledge or expertise your organizational leaders posses that could help the work of other groups.

Most of you know that we lost some recent elections that, if we progressives had been more united, clearer in our message, and better organized to effect  a greater turnout, might not have happened.  Here I am speaking of the loss of the Fair Elections proposition 15 at the State Level, the Strong Mayor Election at the San Diego City Level, the Chula Vista Labor Agreement Measure at the local level, and the loss by Mary Salas, in the Assembly Member Election at the State Level, to Juan Vargas by less than 50 votes.

There is a crying need for us to look at what we are doing, how we are appealing to others to join with us in doing it, and who we are allied with to increase the strength of our support when we need it.  These are doable tasks and learned behaviors.  Please come to take part in this unique gathering.

Yours for a positive future, John

[SDCPJ] Another World is Possible

ASD General meeting:

"Another World is Possible;

Another U.S. is Necessary,"

A Collective Discussion and Reportback on the
US Social Forum by San Diegan participants

Monday, July 19th, 7:00pm

Joyce Beers Community Center

1220 Cleveland Ave., Hillcrest

In June, nearly 30,000 activists gathered in Detroit to take an important step forward in building a powerful multi-racial, multi-sectoral, and internationalist movement to confront the devastating economic and ecological crises. Uniting under the banner "Another World is Possible; Another U.S. is Necessary," the Social Forum created a space for organizers to learn
from each other's experiences and struggles, share analysis of the problems
affecting different communities, build relationships, and align with international
organizers to forge global resistance.

Join us for a report back and collective discussion with San Diego activists who attended, including members of Activist San Diego, Freedom Road Socialist Organization, the Environmental Health Coalition, the American Friends Service Committee, and the Ant Hill Collective.

San Diego Socialist Unity Network
is holding a series of forums to encourage deeper political discussions, which look strategically at our movement, the path to social transformation & a new social order. We use this opportunity to tackle many major issues of our times from a non-sectarian, left perspective in a challenging yet relaxed setting.

What Now For The Left?

The election of Barack Obama as President of the United States is a dramatic development that will change the political environment of the U.S. Many of us campaigned in the election and feel great joy in the result. The new situation will create new opportunities but also new dangers for the left. Will Obama govern as another FDR or as another Bill Clinton? A mass progressive movement helped to elect Obama. Will that movement be able to influence the new administration on the economy, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, civil liberties, etc., or will that movement be demobilized and dissipated once Obama takes office? The names being discussed so far as participants in an Obama administration are not a good sign.

In this Salon we will discuss the possibilities of a renewed left in an environment so different from the Bush years, and what we can do now. In preparation for the discussion, we suggest the following materials:

The web site of Progressives For Obama, initiated by Bill Fletcher, Barbara Ehrenreich, Danny Glover and Tom Hayden: http://progressivesforobama.net/ . In particular, they have an initial Call that puts forth a platform that is worth discussing: http://progressivesforobama.net/our-call-initial-text/ .

Bill Fletcher's post-election editorial in the Black Commentator: http://www.blackcommentator.com/298/298_aw_obama_history_possibilities.html .

Katrina Vanden Heuvel's editorial in The Nation: http://www.thenation.com/blogs/edcut/381701/the_first_100_days?rel=hpbox .

We hope to see you on Sunday.

San Diego Socialist Unity Network
regular meetings alternate with Socialist Salons on the 3rd Sunday of each month. The regular meetings are at the Activist Center, 4246 Wightman St., from 4:30-7 pm. You are invited to attend.

Each Salon will focus on a topic with a short presentation from a socialist perspective. After that, an informal discussion will open to all who attend. With most topics, we will send out a reading or two as background.
