[SDCPJ] May 1st events to attend!

EVENT 1:

On Sunday, May 1, 2011, at 12 noon
, join several organizations as we begin our rally at Balboa Park
outside the Centro Cultural de la Raza (2004 Park Blvd. San Diego, 92101) and march to the Federal Building, from here we will march over to the Civic Center to join a May Day Labor solidarity event at 3pm.

On May 1, 1886, Chicago unionists, reformers, socialists, anarchists, and ordinary workers combined to make Chicago the center of the national movement for an eight-hour day. In the U.S. we must acknowledge the tragedy that took place in 1886, when workers were met by state violence and repression, because of the massive protest that were taking place for several days.  Several workers would be killed and four were eventually hung in jail after an unjust trial.

On this historic day we will show unity with the workers of Wisconsin who are at the center of today's National Movement to protect the working class.  In San Diego we must join in solidarity with the workers of Wisconsin and all workers across the world.

Program

12:00 pm Rally on grass area outside of Centro Cultural de la Raza, 2004 Park Blvd.
1:00 pm March to Federal Building, 880 Front Street, San Diego
2:00 pm Rally in Front of Federal Building

A Play by HOWARD ZINN
Dramatic Reading of "Marx in Soho"
Sunday 7 pm May 1st

"Humorous and stimulating!"

Howard Zinn (1922-2010), author of the classic A People's History of the United States, wrote this play.  In it Marx is back!  The premise of this witty and insightful "play on history" is that Karl Marx has agitated with the authorities of the afterlife for a chance to clear his name. Through a bureaucratic error, though, Marx is sent to Soho in New York, rather than his old stomping ground in London, to make his case. Marx in Soho is a brilliant introduction to Marx's life, his class analysis of society, and his passion for radical change. Zinn also shows how Marx's ideas are relevant in today's world with capitalism in crisis and labor under attack and desperately needing to organize.

[SDCPJ] San Diego Speak Out Against Anti-Trans Violence - Sat. April 30th

San Diego Speak Out Against Anti-Trans Violence - Sat. April 30th

(April 27, 2011, San Diego, Calif.) San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality (SAME) invites all members of the community to "San Diego Speak Out Against Anti-Trans Violence" a march and speak out condemning the despicable attack on a transgender woman at a McDonald's restaurant in Baltimore, and all other anti-trans violence. The march will begin at 7:30 PM in front of the McDonalds in Hillcrest at 1414 University Ave and end with a speak out in view of the Hillcrest sign at 6th Ave and University Ave.

On April 18, 2011 a transgender woman was brutally beaten inside a McDonalds in Baltimore by two patrons while entering a restroom. During the savage beating, a McDonald's employee videotaped the assault with a cell phone; later posting the video on YouTube. "This has been a crushing testament of what people do when they fail to recognize the humanity of another. Two people beat another person nearly to death - that's what happened. When is that ever right?...Never!" said Sean Bohac a member of SAME.

"It saddens us that transgender people are so vulnerable, we must use this tragedy to raise awareness about the everyday dangers that trans people face in the US" said Zakiya Khabir. Many organizers believe that it's important for all members of the community to take a stand, and support all members of the LGBT community. SAME is pleased to coordinate this event with "All Out at City", a student club for members and allies of the LGBT community at San Diego City College.

Participants are encouraged to meet at 6:30 PM outside the McDonalds to make signs, materials will be available. Community members are also encouraged to participate in the 'open-mic' speak out that will follow the march. RSVP here: https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=182726458446098.

SAME is dedicated to working for equal rights for all, particularly restoring marriage equality for all Californians. It envisions a California where all people can marry the person of their choice, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. It works to find common ground and build coalitions among California's diverse communities. More information is available at www.samealliance.com.

All Out: May 1st Int'l Workers Day | A Luchar: 1o de may o Día Int'l de l@s Trabajadores/as

CONSCIOUSNES & UNITY
All out on May Day- International Worker's Day
Unión del Barrio makes this call to all organized sectors of our community to unite this May 1st, International Worker's Day, to demand respect for the rights of all working class people and build the global workers struggle for justice, dignity, and self-determination.

We recognize that the current economic crisis has its root in the rotten capitalist system which is attempting to pay for its own failures on the backs of working people everywhere. As working people we must not continue to pay for this economic crisis, because we did not create it; on the contrary we produce and generate the wealth for those that exploit our labor, criminalize our ability to work and our ability to collectively bargain to improve our working conditions.

On this Sunday, May 1st it is time to join workers and hold actions, discussions, marches, protests, rallies, in your community, town, or city.

Join Unión del Barrio in the following actions in Southern California!

----ESPAÑOL----
CONCIENCIA Y UNIDAD

[SDCPJ] may day rally and march

Several organizations have come together in the spirit of unity to stand in solidarity with our allies in Wisconsin and across the world.  You are also welcome to have a representative of your organization speak that day.

The economic crisis facing the U.S. is global and working people from every country are feeling the pinch.

Please join us in showing unity with all workers from across the globe on International Workers Day.  On May 1 workers from across the world celebrate this historic day in history, when in 1886 workers in Chicago called for a general strike.  Police opened fired on the strikers and killed four, the next day a massive demonstration occurred and police rioted this time causing the deaths of twelve people including one policeman.  Following what is now known as the Haymarket Massacre a trial was held and four anarchist were blamed and convicted for their political ideology and publicly hanged by the authorities.

We in San Diego want to bring awareness about the history of labor in this country and raise awareness to the struggle working and poor people face on a daily basis in this country..

12:00 pm Rally on grass area outside of Centro Cultural de la Raza, 2004 Park Blvd.
1:00 pm March to Federal Building on Front Street, Downtown San Diego

[SDCPJ] Answer to the Federal Budget Crisis

Is Washington serious about the federal budget?  The $38.5 billion in cuts will deprive Americans of desperately needed health, education and housing; but will not even dent the massive federal budget or deficit.

Want to solve the federal budget?  By far, the largest discretionary spending by Washington is military and war.

As of April 9, 2011, 8:00 PM Pacific time, your tax dollars at work destruction:

Cost of U.S. Wars Since 2001

$1,177,836,071,473

Cost of War in Iraq

$783,936,300,770

Cost of War in Afghanistan

$393,899,770,702

See the cost to your community at www.costofwar.com

Source: National Priorities Project

AND THIS INCREASES AT $326,000 EVERY MINUTE.  THIS WILL EAT THROUGH $38.5 BILLION IN 82 DAYS.  And this does not include Libya.

Let your Congress representative know: You want an end to this.

[SDCPJ] Memorial Service information for Ken Secor

Brothers and Sisters:

Below, please find Ken Secor's obituary and information about his memorial service on April 23rd.  Ken's spirit and energy touched so many of us, both in and out of the San Diego Labor Movement; we hope you will be able to join his friends and family in honoring his memory.

Kenneth Edward Secor June 9, 1928-March 25, 2011 Born in Calistoga, CA. Ken joined the US Navy when he was 17 years old. While in the Navy he traveled through numerous countries, including Egypt and Greece. Those experiences triggered a lifelong interest in travel and archeology. After the Navy, at the age of 21, Ken worked as a Machinist for Wright Aeronautical and then Convair/General Dynamics. Soon after starting at Wright Aeronautical he became interested in helping the working man. He earned honors and awards as a volunteer before becoming a business agent union rep for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, where he worked until his retirement at the age of 58. He wrote his family and friends recently that he was so happy that he retired young so he could enjoy his family and travel. He continued to welcome every opportunity to volunteer to help the workers of America, as well as his family and friends. He was on his way home from his latest trip, when he suddenly became ill, and passed away in Incheon, Korea. He is survived by his wife Louise; their six children: Mike, Steve, Mary, Margi, Don, and Anita; seven grandchildren: Nathan, Shawna, Chris, Serena, Katie, Kelly, and Lilli; three great grandchildren: Christian, Isabella, and Jacob; his brother Ron and sister Alyce; and his little dog Canelita. In life, Ken inspired people with his spirit of adventure, loyalty, and generosity. Now that he has passed, we can honor him by pursuing commitments that enrich our lives and inspiring others the way Ken inspired us.

Friends and Family are invited to attend a Memorial service on Saturday, April 23rd, 2011, at 1pm at The First Baptist Church on 5th and E Street in Chula Vista. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the United Farm Workers Association or the Red Cross.

[SDCPJ] Reminder: TONIGHT! Colonel Ann Wright Comes to San Diego!

The San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice invites you
to an Event with Colonel Ann Wright!

Thursday, April 7th, 7pm-9pm
Church of the Brethren
3850 Westgate Place
San Diego, CA  92105

Army Colonel (Ret.) and diplomat Ann Wright is one of three State Dept. officials who publicly resigned in protest at the U.S. Invasion of Iraq.

She has been a tireless anti-war activist ever since. She worked with Cindy Sheehan at Camp Casey. She was part of the Bring Them Home Now bus tour. She has been arrested multiple times for acts of civil disobedience; most recently she was arrested on March 20th outside of Quantico, alongside Daniel Ellsberg, as they protested the unconstitutional confinement of Bradley Manning.

Ann has worked tirelessly for justice in Palestine as well. She was on the steering committee for the Gaza Freedom March. She was a passenger on board the Challenger 1 of the Gaza Flotilla. There she witnessed Israeli Defense Forces shooting percussion grenades into the the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara. Her own ship was boarded as well.

She is an organizer for the US Boat to Gaza for the May, 2011 Gaza Flotilla.

Ann Wright and Susan Dixon co-authored, Dissent: Voices of Conscience which tells the stories of those who have risked their careers and reputations to speak out against the war against Iraq.
