[SDCPJ] DAY AFTER PROP 8 decision event

gabriel conaway wrote:
Friends of Justice & Equality,

As you already know, the California Supreme Court will issue its decision on Prop 8 on Tuesday. On Wednesday, if the court rules against marriage equality,  we will enter the County Administration Building (1600 Pacific Hwy) at noon to demand that the County Clerk issue our comrades Michael and Brian a Marriage License.  We will be determined not to leave until our request is granted, or we are removed.  We are well prepared, committed to non-violence, and will peaceably comply with the authorities.

There will be a rally outside of the building on the Pacific Hwy side to support those going inside. Come join us either by going inside or supporting us outside and please fwd this message to all you know who are in solidarity with the struggle for equal rights.

Our message is that this Community, this Movement is not going away.  In fact, we are growing stronger, we are more broadly embraced and gaining equality; most recently in Iowa, Vermont, and Maine.  We will not wait for state policy to catch up with the ideals that this county was founded on, namely the equal rights of all people. We demand that officials from the County Clerk to the President of the United States immediately remedy this situation by lifting any and all restrictions on Same-sex Marriage.

Marriage rights are fundamental human rights that have been withheld from our Community for too long!  They guarantee hundreds of essential (sometimes life-or-death) privileges to committed couples.  Perhaps most importantly, recognition of same-sex marriage by official institutions and the society as a whole means the recognition and legitimacy of our loving committed relationships.

This possible temporary setback will not weaken our resolve to gain Marriage Equality.  On the contrary, we will turn the anger resulting from an injust decision—just like in the aftermath of the passage of Prop 8—into action.  The movement can and must escalate in terms of its size, its organization, and in its application of tactics.

It is our hope in this time of War, Foreclosure, Deportation and Layoffs, that our movement is an inspiration to all of those struggling for justice!

Yours in the Homosexual Intifada,

Gabriel Conaway

We have documented proof that Pet Works acquires their dogs from mass breeding facilities, where dogs are farmed under the jurisdiction of the US Department of Agriculture. The primary objective is to maximize profits for these breeding facilities (also known as puppy mills), the brokers who work as go-betweens with the breeders and pet stores, and the pet stores themselves.

This is BIG money. Animal Planet states this is now a one billion dollar industry in the US and the number of puppy mills in the US has doubled in the last year! Pet Works will tell you that they guarantee they dont get their puppies from puppy mills. It is  because they use brokers as go-betweens to acquire the dogs. Its the same thing, using different words. Responsible breeders would never sell their dogs to pet stores for resale.

This is going to be a tough job. People are getting rich off of the inhumane treatment of these dogs, especially the breeding females, and they dont like our interference and determination to stop them.

We do not confront  the public or store employees. We dont show them gruesome pictures of the puppy mills themselves. We realize there are several puppy stores in San Diego, but we are beginning our campaign with Pet Works.

PLEASE JOIN US WHENEVER YOU CAN.

Poems from Guantanamo — the Detainees Speak
Closing Guantanamo: Problems and Prospects

Since 2002, at least 775 men have been held in the U.S. detention center at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. According to Department of Defense data, fewer than half of them are accused of committing any hostile act against the United States or its allies. In hundreds of cases, even the circumstances of their initial detainment are questionable.

Friday, May 22,  2009 7:30 pm.  "Poems from Guantanamo" is a collection of poems that gives voice to the men held at Guantánamo. Available only because of the tireless efforts of pro bono attorneys who submitted each line to Pentagon scrutiny, Poems from Guantanamo brings together twenty-two poems by seventeen detainees, most still at Guantanamo, in legal limbo.   The collection was arranged by Marc Falkoff, an assistant professor at the Northern Illinois University College of Law and attorney for several Guantanamo prisoners.

Another Progressive Group Shuts Down:NCCPJ is shutting down

It is sad that there is so much apathy and lack of support for each other in our community.

It is the reason that we do not have power.

May 17, 2009

Dear fellow peacemakers,

After Obama was elected president last November, peace activists exhaled a universal sigh of relief - the nightmare was finally over. Obama would put our nation back on-track, end the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, address global warming, restore our constitutional liberties and end torture. Sadly, now that Obama has had his 100+ days to show us what's up his sleeves, some of us are worried that we were too hasty in thinking the worst was behind us. The changes NCCPJ worked for don't seem to be on the visible horizon.

It has been over TWO YEARS since we organized the last Bring Their Buddies Home Vigil. I don't think that even the most pessimistic among us could have imagined, on that rainy February day in Carlsbad , that  with a Democratic president and a Democratic majority in Congress, our troops would still be in Iraq today. And now we're looking at escalation of the war in Afghanistan and our drones are bombing Pakistan.

Where is the outcry?

Remember the passionate participation of our Peace Train going down to San Diego to join the anti-war marches? Last month, only a car-full of dedicated North County activists showed up for the peace rally in San Diego . Back in January I tried to organize a get-together to get us going again, with a disappointing response.  Since my close-encounter-of-the-cancer-kind, I've been looking for someone to pick up the gauntlet to keep NCCPJ going, but it hasn't happened.  Now that I and my new husband, Juan, have moved to Ocean Beach , it's time for me to move on to other things. It seems like everyone else is also preoccupied with one thing or another. In this depressed economy, those lucky enough to have a job are working longer for less. There are many other very valid explanations for the steep drop in participation in the peace movement, one of them being the realization that all of our efforts so far have pretty much changed nothing. We know the adage: The definition of an idiot is someone who keeps doing the same thing, expecting a different result. So many of us have come to the conclusion that it's time to try something else.

So NCCPJ is shutting down.

What's next?

The issues that first brought us together have not gone away. In fact, in some ways things have gotten worse. While progressives who put their heart and soul into the election of Obama are celebrating their success, we are at the convergence of the perfect storm - economic collapse; environmental catastrophes; resource shortages; and peak oil. And still we waste our precious time, energy, lives and resources on war!  And have you seen how the Democrats gutted the Climate Bill before the Republicans even got to it? Damn! They act like we have time to spare on this issue? Juan and I attended the Winter Soldier Southwest Testimonies last Saturday. Did you see a word about it in the press? The most poignant part for me was hearing Vietnam Veterans cry as they recounted atrocities they witnessed or participated in 40 years ago. We've learned nothing in those 40 years!

Yes, we have to do something different, but we absolutely have to do SOMETHING.

Here's what I'm doing:

Do you want to know who is behind this madness? I did. So I spent a lot of time doing some serious research on it. You know the saying - follow the money - so I did. And I've been giving a presentation called Crisis Economics to share what I've learned. If you'd like to hear what I've discovered about who has the power and how it's being wielded in the world, I'll be speaking to the Valley Center Democratic Club this Tuesday, May 19th, 6:30 PM at the Valley Center Elementary Lower School, 28751 Cole Grade Rd. , Valley Center , CA 92082 . You are welcome to come, no cost. Or, you can arrange for me to talk to your organization, I'm eager to share what I've found out about who is really running the show - hint, it's NOT Obama. Send me an email at jeenicdr@gmail.com if you'd like to have me speak for your group.

A political solution?

If you still think there is a political solution to this mess, you might want to get involved with the North County Progressive Democrats. They are meeting next Sunday May 31st, at 1:00 pm at the Vista Public Library, 700 Eucalyptus Ave., Vista. California Deputy Attorney General Howard Wayne, a three-term member of the California Assembly, will speak on what the state budget reveals about citizens' regard for economic justice. The club will discuss his call for a constitutional amendment to eliminate the 2/3rds vote necessary to pass a budget should the May 19th election defeat the compromise budget. It looks like their website needs some updating, so you might want to send an email to their president, Zoltan Lucas, if you'd like to be on their email list. Zoltan sounds very enthusiastic about doing something effective with the group, so why not give him a hand.

The Truth Will Set Us Free

If you still think that anyone who says that 9/11 was an inside job is a conspiracy nut, you haven't been paying attention. Irrefutable scientific evidence that the 3 buildings that collapsed in New York were deliberately demolished continues to mount. Next month, the founder of Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth, Richard Gage, will be here in North County to share that information with you. Find out why half of America now questions the "official" conspiracy theory about 9/11. With Obama pushing for a surge in Afghanistan , don't you think we owe it to our troops to learn who really is responsible for the attack used to justify going into Afghanistan ? Please take the time to hear Richard speak on June 13, at 2:30 PM at the Encinitas Library, 540 Cornish Dr. Encinitas.

That's it, for now. I'll be shutting down the NCCPJ.org website in a few days. If you'd like to get an email from me occasionally, letting you know what kind of trouble I'm getting into, please sign up at www.communitysurvivalstrategies.com.

In peace and hope (ah yes, there's still hope, even after the campaign slogan fades away)

[SDCPJ] UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories in San Diego June 5!

[SDCPJ] Tuesday, May 19 in San Diego: Day of Action for Troy Davis: We Must Stop the Execution!

Join us from 5-6pm this Tuesday night in front of the Hall of Justice downtown
(330 W Broadway, btwn Union & State Streets)
with your signs demanding

Justice for Troy Davis

----------------

Here's the link to the Amnesty Page to stop the execution of Troy Davis, and some information from that site:

http://takeaction.amnestyusa.org/siteapps/advocacy/index.aspx?c=jhKPIXPCIoE&b=2590179&template=x.ascx&action=12168

Troy Davis was convicted of murdering a Georgia police officer in 1991. Nearly two decades later, Davis remains on death row – even though the case against him has completely fallen apart.

Troy Davis, a man who may well be innocent, had a 30-day stay of execution that expired as of May 15, 2009. No court has yet held a hearing on the new evidence of tainted testimony, yet they are willing to end his life. Now that the stay has expired, Davis can be scheduled for execution at any time.

Hear Davis tell his story himself:
http://luxmedia.vo.ll...

Video summary of the facts of Davis's case:
http://takeaction.amn...

----------------

A summary of recent developments on Davis's case can be found here:
http://socialistworke...

----------------

For the demonstration, please bring signs asking for Justice for Troy Davis

Some ideas:

"No Justice for Troy Davis"
"Who does the law 'protect & serve'?"
"The Georgia Supreme Court is CRUEL... but not unusual"
"Terminate prison racism, not humans"
"Stop prisons for profit"

----------------

Even if you can't come to the demonstration, please sign the petition to have Troy's sentence commuted:

For the first time in many years health care reform is being discussed seriously in the U.S. Congress. Almost everyone on the Left supports Single Payer health insurance.

WHO
    * Performance of selected poems by actors from "Write Out Loud."

    * A discussion by Professor Marjorie Cohn and Attorney Shereen Charlick, evaluating what must be done going forward to close Guantanamo, end torture, and secure justice for its victims.

Shereen Charlick is Chief Trial Attorney at Federal Defenders of San Diego.  Federal Defenders of San Diego currently represents two Guantanamo prisoners.

[SDCPJ] Anti-militarist Web site recently updated

This is to let you know that NEW articles and updated content have recently been posted at http://www.comdsd.org/, the Web site of the San Diego-based Committee Opposed to Militarism and the Draft (COMD).

Included in the current update are three articles from the latest issue of COMD's printed newsletter, Draft NOtices:

- "Victory!," by Paula Hoffman Villanueva, describes the achievement of a monumental victory in the effort get rid of weapons training in 11 San Diego high schools and stop the tracking of students into the Pentagon's JROTC program.

- "The U.S. Military's Toxic Legacy," a digest of online articles on the military's destructive environmental impact, compiled by Mernie Aste.

- "Freedom Fighters on My Mind,"  Writer Ernie McCray's stirring tribute to the high school students who played a key role in the underdog struggle that succeeded in winning curbs on the JROTC program in San Diego schools.

To order the complete printed version of Draft NOtices, visit the Web site's Draft NOtices page. In addition to the above three articles, the current printed version includes:

- details on California legislation seeking to preserve the privilege of physical education waivers for JROTC cadets;

- an outline of a successful campaign to place limits on military recruiter access to student information in Monterey County, California;

- the personal account of a young woman's struggle to leave the Army;

- recent data on military personnel suicides.

[SDCPJ] NOTICE: 5/13 Protest Xe (Blackwater) at SWC!

FLIER ATTACHED. PLEASE DISTRIBUTE AT SCHOOLS, COFFEE HOUSES, LIBRARIES, ETC!!

About a year ago, Blackwater forced the City of San Diego to issue occupancy permits for their unwanted Otay Mesa warfare training facility using the Federal Court system in an audacious display of secretive corporate power.

Now, Blackwater is attempting to purify their tarnished image by changing their official name to “Xe” and using the good name of Southwestern Community College to act like just another educational institution, which they are not.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreed to by the governing board in Feb, 2009, allowed students to use the XBW shooting range, ostensibly for free, but then proceeded to provide that XBW would be reimbursed, that XBW would have access to on-campus conference rooms (apparently for mercenary recruiting) and imposed a “gag-order” on the Board of Governors, forcing approval of their statements by XBW in writing, among other problems.

On March 11, the Board reconsidered the MOU but voted to leave it in place and instead just renegotiate the many questionable provisions. Although an improvement, the college should STAY AWAY from BLACKWATER! (Four federal cases will be heard in San Diego later this year on their murderous behavior in Iraq.)

THIS AGREEMENT MUST BE STOPPED! We must say loud and clear that Blackwater-Xe cannot use our community colleges to purify their bad reputation.

PROTEST PRIOR TO THE BOARD MEETING. Bring Signs, etc. THEN COMMENT DURING THE MEETING at 7pm. ARRIVE EARLY TO GET A SEAT.

Southwestern Community College will have a revised Memorandum of Understanding on the ballot for the meeting THIS WEEK at Southwestern College (Wednesday, 5/13). Please review the new agreement.

http://www.copswiki.org/w/bin/view/Common/M781

We want this REVOKED. Even if you love the idea, the agreement still has some problems, as follows:

1. Allows Blackwater-Xe to promote that it has this agreement with Southwestern College to purify its reputation. It should have a provision stating that XBW will not be allowed to include any reference to the agreement in any promotional material, on its web site, etc. We note that it now calling itself "U.S. Training Center, Southwest" to hide from the past and to muddy the water between the college and themselves, in a further attempt to look like an educational institution.

2. Allows Blackwater operatives to make presentations to the staff, and possibly to students. The schedule is "to be determined" but we want it determined now.

3. Use has been expanded from shooting range to using classrooms and mat area, and perhaps using the "kill house". These uses are not stated in the justification for the agreement.

4. The college should be able to terminate AT WILL. Why is 4 months required?

5. (New one) Restricts access to the facility so that observers can't find out what they are doing inside. Must have the ability for citizens to provide healthy oversight of this situation. What are they afraid of?

Please take a look and let me know if you see any other issues.

PLEASE PLAN to attend this meeting. It will be held at the main Board room (Room 214) on the main campus of Southwestern College. WE NEED FULL DEPLOYMENT!

Stop Blackwater Protest/Comment at Southwestern College. (6:30pm) Put a stop to agreement between SWC and Blackwater to allow the firm to use on-campus conference rooms for mercenary recruiting. After the rally, attend Governing Board meeting at 7pm in Room 214. The college is located at 900 Otay Lakes Road, Chula Vista, CA 91910. Info: 619-820-5321 See: Blackwater In Southwestern College for background.

[SDCPJ] high school outreach for end of school year!

Fellow activists

The end of the school year is fast approaching.  High school seniors who are on delayed deferment will be getting ready to report for duty.
They still have time to change their minds and we want to let them know how.
We also want to reach all students with a message of hope for their future and to educate them on alternatives to the military.

Please join us for the end of the year leafleting.

We will be at several high schools during the week of May 18th.

We need volunteers in all parts of the county.

South bay, East county and North county too!
Please reply to this e-mail if you have a date and location that would work for you.  I'll connect you to a team of volunteers and provide you with the materials, directions etc...

Thank you for your help this year.  We've reached thousands of students through this work and continue to build a base of student activists.
