[SDCPJ] DAY AFTER PROP 8 decision event
Friends of Justice & Equality,
As you already know, the California Supreme Court will issue its decision on Prop 8 on Tuesday. On Wednesday, if the court rules against marriage equality, we will enter the County Administration Building (1600 Pacific Hwy) at noon to demand that the County Clerk issue our comrades Michael and Brian a Marriage License. We will be determined not to leave until our request is granted, or we are removed. We are well prepared, committed to non-violence, and will peaceably comply with the authorities.
There will be a rally outside of the building on the Pacific Hwy side to support those going inside. Come join us either by going inside or supporting us outside and please fwd this message to all you know who are in solidarity with the struggle for equal rights.
Our message is that this Community, this Movement is not going away. In fact, we are growing stronger, we are more broadly embraced and gaining equality; most recently in Iowa, Vermont, and Maine. We will not wait for state policy to catch up with the ideals that this county was founded on, namely the equal rights of all people. We demand that officials from the County Clerk to the President of the United States immediately remedy this situation by lifting any and all restrictions on Same-sex Marriage.
Marriage rights are fundamental human rights that have been withheld from our Community for too long! They guarantee hundreds of essential (sometimes life-or-death) privileges to committed couples. Perhaps most importantly, recognition of same-sex marriage by official institutions and the society as a whole means the recognition and legitimacy of our loving committed relationships.
This possible temporary setback will not weaken our resolve to gain Marriage Equality. On the contrary, we will turn the anger resulting from an injust decision—just like in the aftermath of the passage of Prop 8—into action. The movement can and must escalate in terms of its size, its organization, and in its application of tactics.
It is our hope in this time of War, Foreclosure, Deportation and Layoffs, that our movement is an inspiration to all of those struggling for justice!
Yours in the Homosexual Intifada,
Gabriel Conaway

We have documented proof that Pet Works acquires their dogs from mass breeding facilities, where dogs are farmed under the jurisdiction of the US Department of Agriculture. The primary objective is to maximize profits for these breeding facilities (also known as puppy mills), the brokers who work as go-betweens with the breeders and pet stores, and the pet stores themselves.
This is BIG money. Animal Planet states this is now a one billion dollar industry in the US and the number of puppy mills in the US has doubled in the last year! Pet Works will tell you that they guarantee they don’t get their puppies from puppy mills. It is because they use brokers as go-betweens to acquire the dogs. It’s the same thing, using different words. Responsible breeders would never sell their dogs to pet stores for resale.
This is going to be a tough job. People are getting rich off of the inhumane treatment of these dogs, especially the breeding females, and they don’t like our interference and determination to stop them.
We do not confront the public or store employees. We don’t show them gruesome pictures of the puppy mills themselves. We realize there are several puppy stores in San Diego, but we are beginning our campaign with Pet Works.
PLEASE JOIN US WHENEVER YOU CAN.
YOUR PARTICIPATION CAN SAVE INNOCENT LIVES!

Discussions with Lefties on Burning Issues
For the first time in many years health care reform is being discussed seriously in the U.S. Congress. There is even a good chance that legislation providing some form of near-universal health insurance will pass and be signed by the President. The question is what will this reform look like? Almost everyone on the Left supports Single Payer health insurance.

Poems from Guantanamo — the Detainees Speak
Closing Guantanamo: Problems and Prospects
Since 2002, at least 775 men have been held in the U.S. detention center at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. According to Department of Defense data, fewer than half of them are accused of committing any hostile act against the United States or its allies. In hundreds of cases, even the circumstances of their initial detainment are questionable.
Friday, May 22, 2009 7:30 pm. "Poems from Guantanamo" is a collection of poems that gives voice to the men held at Guantánamo. Available only because of the tireless efforts of pro bono attorneys who submitted each line to Pentagon scrutiny, Poems from Guantanamo brings together twenty-two poems by seventeen detainees, most still at Guantanamo, in legal limbo. The collection was arranged by Marc Falkoff, an assistant professor at the Northern Illinois University College of Law and attorney for several Guantanamo prisoners.

[SDCPJ] NOTICE: 5/13 Protest Xe (Blackwater) at SWC!
About a year ago, Blackwater forced the City of San Diego to issue occupancy permits for their unwanted Otay Mesa warfare training facility using the Federal Court system in an audacious display of secretive corporate power.
Now, Blackwater is attempting to purify their tarnished image by changing their official name to “Xe” and using the good name of Southwestern Community College to act like just another educational institution, which they are not.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreed to by the governing board in Feb, 2009, allowed students to use the XBW shooting range, ostensibly for free, but then proceeded to provide that XBW would be reimbursed, that XBW would have access to on-campus conference rooms (apparently for mercenary recruiting) and imposed a “gag-order” on the Board of Governors, forcing approval of their statements by XBW in writing, among other problems.
On March 11, the Board reconsidered the MOU but voted to leave it in place and instead just renegotiate the many questionable provisions. Although an improvement, the college should STAY AWAY from BLACKWATER! (Four federal cases will be heard in San Diego later this year on their murderous behavior in Iraq.)
THIS AGREEMENT MUST BE STOPPED! We must say loud and clear that Blackwater-Xe cannot use our community colleges to purify their bad reputation.
PROTEST PRIOR TO THE BOARD MEETING. Bring Signs, etc. THEN COMMENT DURING THE MEETING at 7pm. ARRIVE EARLY TO GET A SEAT.
Southwestern Community College will have a revised Memorandum of Understanding on the ballot for the meeting THIS WEEK at Southwestern College (Wednesday, 5/13). Please review the new agreement.
http://www.copswiki.org/w/bin/view/Common/M781
We want this REVOKED. Even if you love the idea, the agreement still has some problems, as follows:
1. Allows Blackwater-Xe to promote that it has this agreement with Southwestern College to purify its reputation. It should have a provision stating that XBW will not be allowed to include any reference to the agreement in any promotional material, on its web site, etc. We note that it now calling itself "U.S. Training Center, Southwest" to hide from the past and to muddy the water between the college and themselves, in a further attempt to look like an educational institution.
2. Allows Blackwater operatives to make presentations to the staff, and possibly to students. The schedule is "to be determined" but we want it determined now.
3. Use has been expanded from shooting range to using classrooms and mat area, and perhaps using the "kill house". These uses are not stated in the justification for the agreement.
4. The college should be able to terminate AT WILL. Why is 4 months required?
5. (New one) Restricts access to the facility so that observers can't find out what they are doing inside. Must have the ability for citizens to provide healthy oversight of this situation. What are they afraid of?
Please take a look and let me know if you see any other issues.
PLEASE PLAN to attend this meeting. It will be held at the main Board room (Room 214) on the main campus of Southwestern College. WE NEED FULL DEPLOYMENT!
Stop Blackwater Protest/Comment at Southwestern College. (6:30pm) Put a stop to agreement between SWC and Blackwater to allow the firm to use on-campus conference rooms for mercenary recruiting. After the rally, attend Governing Board meeting at 7pm in Room 214. The college is located at 900 Otay Lakes Road, Chula Vista, CA 91910. Info: 619-820-5321 See: Blackwater In Southwestern College for background.
