[SDCPJ] FW: [UNAC-CC] National Days of Action: Stop the War Against Syria!

National Days of Action to Stop the War Against Syria have been called for June 28-July 17, 2013.  This call has been endorsed by UNAC, ANSWER, UFPJ and many other national and local groups and prominent individuals (see list below).  There is a link for groups to sign onto the list and also to list actions and events below.  Please add your groups to the list as we unite to do what we can to prevent the next impending war.

United Statement and Call for Action to Oppose

U.S./NATO and Israeli War on Syria

No more wars – U.S. out of the Middle East!

(please see the links at the bottom of the page to endorse the call and provide information on actions)

National Days of Action, June 28- July 17, 2013

The White House's June 13th announcement that it would begin directly supplying arms to the opposition in Syria is a dramatic escalation of the U.S./NATO war against that country.  Thousands of U.S. troops and intelligence personnel are training opposition forces and coordinating operations in Turkey and Jordan.  Israel, the recipient of more than $3 billion annually in U.S. military aid has carried out heavy bombing raids against Syria. The Pentagon has developed plans for a "no-fly" zone over Syria, threatening a new U.S. air war.

The pretext for this escalation is the assertion, presented without any actual evidence, that the Syrian government has used chemical weapons in the conflict that has been raging for more than two years.  Like their predecessors, President Obama and other top U.S. officials pretend to be concerned about "democracy" and "human rights" in Syria, but their closest allies in the campaign against Syria are police-state, absolute monarchies like Saudi Arabia and Qatar.  Once again the so-called 'Responsibility to protect', R2P, is used as a pretext for NATO to dominate this region.

Just as the false claim of "weapons of mass destruction" was used as justification for the invasion and occupation of Iraq in 2003, the allegations that chemical weapons were used by the Syrian military is meant to mask the real motives of Washington and its allies. Their aim is to carry out "regime change," as part of the drive to create a "new Middle East."

The invasion of Iraq in 2003, the U.S.-backed Israeli war in Lebanon in 2006, the 2011 NATO bombing of Libya, the now-escalating war in Syria and the growing threats against Iran are part of a coordinated regional effort by the United States, Britain and France to dominate this oil-rich and strategic region.

The U.S. government cuts basic services and has eliminated hundreds of thousands of public sector workers jobs in the last three years in the name of  a discredited austerity which has destroyed the economy, but has unlimited billions available for wars of aggression and NSA surveillance of almost every American.

We join together to call for National Days of Action, June 28- July 15, 2013, to demand:

StoStop the U.S./NATO/Israeli war and all forms of intervention against Syria!
·        Self-determination free from outside intervention for the Syrian people!
·        Fund people's needs, not the military!
·        U.S. Out of the Middle East!

[SDCPJ] Dirty Wars film - EXTENDED!

Yes, you have ONE MORE week to see the film! Or to see it again?!

Kensington Landmark
Friday June 28th - Thurs July 4th

Showtimes are
Fri-Sat-Sun 2:30pm or 7pm
Mon-Thur are only 7pm

We encourage all of you and your friends to support Jeremy Scahill's journalistic efforts and the filmmakers by seeing this documentary *IN* the theater. It is quite thought provoking and also well filmed -- very worth seeing on the "big screen."

We (PRC) also have a few SIGNED books left for purchase if you're interested. They are $30 each (regular cover price is 29.99, so you're getting quite a deal with the autograph!). Please email if interested.

Thanks!
(Below is an email from one of the producers)

Subject: Dirty Wars moving to a new theater in San Diego this Friday

Dear friends,

A film I am extremely proud to have produced, Dirty Wars, is being held in San Diego for a second week but is moving on Friday to the Landmark Theaters Ken Cinema, 4061 Adams Avenue, San Diego, CA 92116.

The film features independent journalist Jeremy Scahill, the New York Times bestselling author of Blackwater and now Dirty Wars (the book of the same title as the film).

The film won the Cintematography Prize at Sundance. Variety says it is "astonishingly hard-hitting" and adds: "This jaw-dropping, persuasively researched pic has the power to pry open government lockboxes." Below is a poster with some of the highlights of this and other write ups we've received.

You can see the trailer here: http://dirtywars.org/trailer

I hope you can help us spread the word about our opening and see the film.

Best
Anthony

Day Of Decision: Win or Lose, We're Not Done Yet!

While Prop 8 may have been the spark to re-ignite a fire in the Queer community in 2008, we know that we will need the fire to keep burning after tomorrow's ruling, no matter the outcome. We will need to be active and vigilant to get rid of employment discrimination, youth bullying and other violence against our community.

We have an exciting list of allies and activists ready to speak tomorrow. Some you will know, others may have new ideas for solidarity and bridge-building. Begin gathering at the flag pole at 5pm, then hear these speakers beginning at 545pm:
  • Alphie Padilla, organizer with Canvass for a Cause and transgender activist
  • Unity Fellowship Church pastor Rev. Gerald Greene
  • Christina Griffin, organizer for San Diego branch of NAACP and United Domestic Workers of America
  • Cathy Carmack, queer historian and Canvass for a Cause organizer

[SDCPJ] Urgent Action: Demand Freedom for the Children of Palestine

Urgent Action: Demand Freedom for the Children of Palestine

The Declaration of the Rights of the Child, adopted by the United Nations in
1959, states that every child (regardless of race, color, sex, language,
religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property,
birth or other status, whether of himself or of his family) shall be
protected against all forms of neglect, cruelty and exploitation (articles 1
and 9). Furthermore, The International Convention on the Rights of the
Child, which came into force in 1990, sets out to further protect the rights
of children.

Since its imposition in 1948 in Palestine, the Israeli state has not only
neglected the rights of the child, but has killed, injured, imprisoned and
tortured, and used Palestinian children as human shields. It has targeted
playgrounds and schools. Just in the period between September 2000 and April
2013, the Israeli occupation killed 1,518 Palestinian children.
This is equivalent to one Palestinian child killed by Israel every 3 days
for almost 13 years! The number of Palestinian children injured by the
Israelis since September 2000 has reached 6,000 (4 children physically
injured every 3 days!). The number of Palestinian children imprisoned since
September 2000  is 9,000. That's 6 children imprisoned every three days!
In a 22-page report issued in March 2013, UNICEF described the ill-treatment
of Palestinian minors held within the Israeli military detention system as
"widespread, systematic and institutionalized". This month (June 2013), the
UN Committee on the Rights of the Child said it expressed its "deepest
concern about the reported practice of torture and ill-treatment of
Palestinian children
arrested, prosecuted and detained by the military and
the police". Per the latest reports, there are 236 Palestinian
children (minors) currently detained in Israel's prisons.

ACT NOW

Please take a moment to write and call the White House and demand that the
US administration put a stop to Israel's detention, abuse, mistreatment
and torture of Palestine's children. Demand the administration use its
considerable financial and military aid to the Zionist state to
demand Freedom for all Palestinian Children and impose an end to Israel's
abuse
of the fundamental human rights of Palestine's children.

To write the White House, please use the form at

Dr. Aafia Assaulted in Prison to Point of Unconsciousness
June 4, 2013
FORT WORTH: Last week, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui who is detained at Carswell Prison at a US Military base in Fort Worth, United States was physically assaulted in her prison cell and left unconscious and bleeding.  She eventually received medical care after two days and intervention by her lawyer, Ms. Tina Foster.  Dr. Aafia was visited by her lawyer within days of the incident and is now in better condition.  The Pakistani consulate in Texas also sent a high level team to visit Dr. Aafia.
She has still not been able to visit with family members. The last family visit was over a year ago.

This latest "incident" underscores the need for independent medical treatment of Dr. Aafia that is outside of the prison system. It also further highlights the urgent need for her repatriation to Pakistan where she may serve out her sentence and the governments can avoid the diplomatic problems that arise from incidents of this type.

Carswell prison claims it is conducting an "internal investigation into the incident". The findings will likely remain secret
For more information on the case of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, please go to: http://freeaafia.org/
