[SDCPJ] Fwd: NEWS ADVISORY: Local veterans encourage the public to stay home from the Miramar Air Show

Subject: NEWS ADVISORY:  Local veterans encourage the public to stay home from the Miramar Air Show

NEWS ADVISORY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LOCAL SAN DIEGO VETERANS CONTINUE TO PROTEST THE WORTH OF THE ANNUAL SEPTEMBER MIRAMAR AIR SHOW
Summary:
Chapter members and friends of the San Diego Veterans For Peace will be "bannering" above the I-15 at the Carroll Canyon Road exit again this Thursday, August 17th,  as well as future Thursdays prior to the air show, from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM, against the continuation of the annual September Miramar Air Show, and to encourage the general public to stay home.
Who:    Chapter members and friends of the San Diego Veterans For Peace, the local chapter of the national Veterans For Peace organization.
When:      Thursday, August 17th, 2017 and future Thursdays prior to the September 22-24 air show
Where:      Carroll Canyon Road overpass along the I-15
Why:      Each year, San Diego hosts the giant Miramar Air Show, which is attended by up to 500,000 people.  This air show is typical of many other air shows around the country in that it attempts to glorify and glamorize war and militarism, as well as being an excellent opportunity for defense contractors and the overall military industrial complex to sell products which lead to the deaths and injuries of so many people on earth.
The San Diego Veterans For Peace, with veteran members of all five services, is opposed to these "war shows" and is asking the public to stay home and to provide more wholesome entertainment to their children and families than the Miramar Air Show provides.  As part of this educational outreach, veterans will be located with banners on the Carroll Canyon Road overpass of I-15 from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM on each Thursday just prior to the air show.
The press and the public are invited to join the San Diego Veterans For Peace on the Carroll Canyon Road overpass each Thursday.
For more information or for veteran interviews, please contact David Patterson, US Air Force veteran, at 760-207-9139 or at DPatterson998@yahoo.com.

[SDCPJ] Fw: Can this be put out on the whole SDCPJ Listserve? Fw: From Craig Jones - your support asked

Dear Peace & Justice Colleagues,

Hope all are well and working on your own aspects of peace and justice, in all the ways needed!  The purpose of this message is to ask simply for your quick and easy support of a San Diego regional effort, to create a much better, FUNCTIONAL public transportation system for all. All that's needed is your name in support, to build public pressure.

You may have seen recent news about SANDAG, the regional planning/transit planning agency, on how it determined to mislead the public on public taxes raised for transportation projects.  The problem goes even deeper, and FYI here's a link to a really excellent, short piece in the Aug. 1 San Diego Free Press:   https://sandiegofreepress.org/2017/08/bombshell-report-details-sandag-misdeeds-cover-up/#comment-2475593

I've been working since 2005 with partners to create a detailed plan for a better public transportation system, offered as an alternative to the formal SANDAG Regional Transportation Plan (RTP).  This alternative has been developed in detail, and is now "fully baked" with capital and operations components; it is computer modeled and tested.  It promises to provide substantially better access, service, and reduce ongoing public subsidy. But, consideration of this alternative has been stonewalled by SANDAG.  The alternative is called the Quickway Proposal. Here are Web and Facebook links, if you wish to look into details:
on Facebook, search "San Diego Quickway Proposal"
With the revelations about SANDAG there is now an opportunity to break through the stonewalling and actually give the Quickway Proposal fair consideration.  But, it will take public pressure on the SANDAG Board and local electeds, to achieve this.  The partners I'm working with will do the "heavy lifting" on lobbying these officials. This will not work unless there is a certain level of public support, from individuals and organizations.  I ask for your name in support now.  If you use Facebook, you can "like" the Quickway Proposal's Facebook page.  If not Facebook, we will be creating a Web page where support can be lodged, but for now, please just email me back with your support so I can keep track.  But, please don't delay, this needs doing quickly.  Please DO pass this on to your networks, and organizations you work with (I'm approaching SD 350 and others, more are needed!)

I'm more than happy to speak with anyone for more details; if you trust my word in working with me on peace & justice issues, please trust that this is needed, and really is a local San Diego regional social justice issue.  THANKS in advance,

Craig Jones

Subject: Gather with Our Communities Against Hate on Sunday, August 20th
Reply-To: "ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties" <info@aclusandiego.org>

We invite you to stand with us this Sunday afternoon to demonstrate San Diego's resilience and unity against hate, injustice and violence.

We were all shaken and deeply offended by the actions of white supremacists in Charlottesville's Emancipation Park last weekend.  We mourn the lives senselessly lost and agonize for those harmed both physically and emotionally.

The ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties rejects white supremacy, bigotry and racism.  We work every day to challenge these hateful ideologies and eradicate the terrible injustices they inspire.  We work in strong, diverse coalitions to achieve the positive social change we envision for all San Diegans.

We welcome you and all San Diegans committed to social justice to join with us and allies this Sunday for the "United Intersections of Justice Rally."

Where: The Hillcrest Pride Flag at the intersection of  University Avenue and Normal Street, San Diego, California 92103.
When: Sunday, August 20, 2017 at 4pm.
What: A peaceful rally and powerful demonstration of San Diego's intersectional movements and leaders standing against hatred, violence and the rhetoric that fuels both.

The rally will be wheelchair accessible and ASL interpretation will be provided. More details can be found on the Facebook event page. Please contact Cassie Purdy, Organizer, at cpurdy@aclusandiego.org or 619-559-7313 if you have additional questions about this event.

Activist Forum: Got White Supremacy?

Movement Building to Stop Police Brutality & For a Racial Justice Agenda;

Mon. Aug. 21, 7 pm

In the aftermath of Charlottesville, VA how to we take on White Supremacy in San Diego? How to we identify the icons of Western Slave holders and examine what happened to the native Kumeyaay in San Diego -- and develop actions to correct history as it has been told?

Why has San Diego been plagued, for decades by incidents of police brutality? What must we do to build and sustain racial justice organizing against police abuse, police shootings, mass incarceration, disproportionate/racialized sentencing, marginalization of communities of color and institutionalized discrimination?

Shortly SD will have a new District Attorney and a new SDPD chief, but nothing will change unless we mobilize for systemic restructuring all of law enforcement and Police training... training that allows officers to shoot first and ask questions later, shoot those suffering mental issues, shoot those who are non-compliant, and disproportionately shoot youth of color.
Join us & participate to hear some of San Diego's best organizers, leading organizations and help us plan our response!

Speakers include: Dr. Darwin Fishman, Rev. Bouser, Indivisible Hillcrest, SURJ, Mohamed Abdallah, Buki Domingos, Rev. Shane Harris and others. Kumeyaay leaders invited.

Activist San Diego membership meeting, Joyce Beers Community Center: Mon. Aug. 20th 7-9 p.m.
Open to all social justice activists!

We'll have guest speakers, community discussion and ways for you to become active in San Diego right now!

Last year, Assemblymember Bill Quirk (D-Hayward) introduced House Resolution 59 to proclaim the month of August as "Muslim Appreciation and Awareness Month" and was joined by 61 co-authors. He will be reintroducing the resolution with HR 43 on August 21 with Assemblymembers Ash Kalra and Kansen Chu as co-sponsors.

CONTACT: CAIR-SD Executive Director Hanif Mohebi, 858-774-9991, hmohebi@cair.com

"I am proud to celebrate the first ever Muslim Appreciation and Awareness Month by honoring generations of Muslim Americans for their many social, cultural, and economic contributions to California," said Assemblymember Quirk.

"We're honored to have friends that acknowledge the important contributions of the American Muslim community, particularly given the current political climate," said CAIR San Diego's Executive Director Hanif Mohebi.

CAIR-CA is a chapter of CAIR, America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

[SDCPJ] Fwd: OKINAWAN PEOPLE VISIT SAN DIEGO MILITARY BASES THURSDAY, AUGUST 17,

OKINAWAN PEOPLE VISIT SAN DIEGO MILITARY BASES THURSDAY, AUGUST 17,

All Okinawa Calls for US Military Base Expansion To Stop On Their Island

OKINAWAN DELEGATION TO TOUR SAN DIEGO MILITARY BASES
with the PRC and SDVFP

THURSDAY, August 17, 3-9pm

The Peace Resource Center of San Diego and the San Diego Chapter of Veterans For Peace are honored to host a visiting peace delegation of dignitaries from Okinawa, Japan, in a tour of pivotal military sites around San Diego. The delegates are part of "All Okinawa", a coalition of community and local officials that are challenging the ongoing US military base expansion on the island of Okinawa.  The broad background of the delegates is to promote dialogue among a diverse group on problems of poverty, discrimination, and inequity and the impact of militarism on social conditions.

The joint tour of peace activists includes pivotal military interests in our area.  It will start at the weekly San Diego Chapter of the Veterans For Peace "No MAS" demonstration opposite the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar base and end at the Women's Museum of California at Liberty Station, an ex-military base converted into community spaces.

The self-guided tour begins at 3:30pm on the I-15 Carroll Canyon Overpass.
Look for the banners and the peace flags.

We invite you to join us for some or all of the tour.

Visit our FB page for details about the Delegation's Visit.

The "All Okinawa" Coalition works to stop US base construction on the island of Okinawa west of Japan.  US militarism is destroying the ecosystem and quality of life of Okinawa.

Satoru Oshiro, a delegate and Secretary General of the Okinawa Peace Center, explains the significance of the tour focus on San Diego military sites. "The presence of US Marines in very significant in Okinawa.  The US is building a huge base for the Marine Corps in Henoko that is hurting all of Okinawa."  Because of this, he adds, "Okinawa is the focal point of the anti-base movement in Japan".  The delegation is working urgently to educate people in the US about the problems foreign-based US military bases bring to local communities.  Both the Peace Resource Center and Veterans For Peace have worked closely with the Okinawa Peace Center and Okinawans resisting US base expansions over the past 10 years.  Last year, Veterans For Peace members traveled to Okinawa to participate in the rallies and road blocks.

A message from the San Diego Chapter, Veterans For Peace

We at VFP are especially honored to have the Okinawa delegation stand with us at our weekly No Miramar Air Show demonstration.

Okinawa is being destroyed by the US military, in a push to expand our presence in South East Asia.  The people of Okinawa feel American militarism and it's negative effects every day, in the loss of culture, land and a peaceful existence.

The Miramar Air Show is being used by the Military to brainwash the people of San Diego that might is always right.  We at VFP reject that message and stand against US militarism by asking the public to refrain from attending.

Osprey "Bird of War" Heliopad, Okinawa

Note: Coming soon to the PRC - a special showing of SDVFP short documentary of the MAS propaganda machine, Disneyland of War.
