Annual conference of the Peace and Justice Studies Association
"Courageous Presence: Shifting Stories and Practices of Peace"
October 16–18, 2014
at University of San Diego
To work for peace and justice from a place of hope, compassion, and persistence requires courage — not only to face conflict, suffering, and violence, but also to claim one's own share of the trouble and thereby disrupt the cycle of disowned projection that creates the Other. Such courageous presence invites spaciousness, creativity, and inclusivity. In this spirit, the 2014 PJSA conference has invited presentations that tell new stories, shift perspectives on old ones, include participants who are not commonly at the table, and develop transformation and emerging possibilities.
Our conference will be held on the beautiful campus of the University of San Diego on a mesa overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Taking advantage of its location just 20 minutes from the busiest international border crossing in the world (San Diego/Tijuana), we have expressly welcomed presentations from Mexican and Latin American colleagues, as well as on border and indigenous issues. We also plan to host presentations from the area of disability studies as well as the broad range of fields comprising peace, conflict, and justice studies.

And we want to INVITE YOU
to join us for a special After Event...
Sunday, October 19th, from 1-3 pm
Meet & Greet PLUS Conversation:
More than "Beyond the Divide"
held inside the Peace Resource Center
3850 Westgate Place, San Diego 92105
Free & Open to the public
Light/healthy snacks provided
The PJSA conference will have a special screening on Friday of BEYOND THE DIVIDE, a feature-length documentary film set in Montana and about war, peace, and the courage to find common ground. BUT... we know Q&A time after a film with a large group is brief, so we at the Peace Resource Center are hosting this additional "After Event" on Sunday @ 1pm to jump on this limited opportunity!
COME MEET these two special Montana visitors:
-- Betsy Mulligan-Dague, Executive Director of Jeannette Rankin Peace Center
-- Dan Gallagher, Vietnam veteran
AND stay for CONVERSATION about their efforts and peace work, and how this relates to San Diego. What are the parallels? What common ground do WE all have? Let's learn and brainstorm from each other's experiences to figure out how to better build peace!

For more information about the conference, see below.

ALSO... If interested, you can still be a conference VOLUNTEER! There are a few more spots that would be helpful. In exchange, you will receive a free PJSA t-shirt and will be able to attend some conference sessions and events (for example, give a half day and you'll get to attend the other half of that day free). Volunteering may include assistance with registration/information tables, providing support during Q & A, and greeting and directing participants to their destinations. To volunteer, please contact (ASAP!) Jill Covert at jill.covert@gmail.com with your availability October 17-18 between 7am to 9pm.
