·    9:15 am- The crosses at the border: More than 7,000 immigrants have died trying to cross the border since 1994, when NAFTA was imposed.

·    9:30 am- Otay Industrial Park, Sanyo and other maquiladoras: workers' labor conditions, labor rights and struggles

NOTE: We will visit the Tijuana industrial area but won't enter any factory.

·    11:15 am- Rio Alamar, or how maquiladoras, distorted urban development and wild industrialization define Tijuana

·    12:00 pm- Foxconn: the largest maquiladora in both Tijuana and the world

·    12:45 pm- Lunch

·    1:15 pm:- Group dialogue about the experience; time for questions and comments

Prison Reform Supported by Both Conservatives and Progressives

This week President Obama has launched a major push to reform the country’s criminal justice system. On Monday, he granted clemency to 46 men and women facing extreme sentences — in some cases life in prison — for nonviolent drug offenses. Tomorrow he is set to become the first sitting president to visit a federal prison. On Tuesday, Obama described what he called a "broken system" in an address at the NAACP’s annual convention. During his speech, Obama praised the "unlikely bedfellows" campaigning together for criminal justice reform from the left and right, including the Koch Brothers and Van Jones. We speak to Jones, Obama’s former green jobs adviser, and Mark Holden, senior vice president and general counsel for Koch Industries, where he is a close adviser to its leader, Charles Koch. We also speak to Shaka Senghor. He shot and killed a man in 1991. At the age of 19, he went to prison for 19 years, seven of which he spent in solitary confinement. He has used his experience to inspire and motivate others to understand the causes of youth violence.

Bay Area CODEPINK has been returning annually to Creech AFB in Nevada since 2009 to resist drone warfare.  Creech is the most important center for the United States' illegal and brutal targeted killing operations by drones, and it is where hundreds of children from Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and elsewhere have been murdered remotely under the top command of the CIA.  This October we are trying something new.  The drone resistance movement is growing worldwide and after such a successful collaborative action during last year's SHUT DOWN CREECH, CODEPINK is organizing a two phase extended action at Creech this October.  In the first phase we are inviting activists from all organizations for a mass 3 DAY Mobilization.  The second phase will be a women only CODEPINK Retreat and Drone Resistance Week.  We hope you will join us for one of these actions, and, of course, women are encouraged to join both, if able.

CODEPINK is calling on activists from across the country to unite in 3 days of mass action at Creech AFB.

Mostly tent camping, limited beds in guest house (early reservations a must).  Access to kitchen for shared meals.  All participants will contribute to meal planning, preparation and clean-up in good ol' "community spirit."

NEW RESOLUTION:

RECOMMENDATION: Approve resolution supporting development of a San Diego Unified Climate Action Plan (CAP), in alignment with the City of San Diego CAP.

 

BACKGROUND: Climate change is becoming an increasing threat to human existence both globally and locally, and as a community we must take immediate action to find a way to protect the health of our students and employees and our quality of life now and in the future.

 

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has identified climate change as a children's issue and on December 9, 2014, the San Diego Unified Board of Education adopted a resolution in support of the PTA Climate Change Initiative.

 

At the February 10, 2015, board meeting, the Board of Education of the San Diego Unified School District committed to develop a San Diego Unified Climate Action Plan (CAP) aligned with the City of San Diego CAP.

 

San Diego Unified plans to partner with the City of San Diego on a Feasibility Study of Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) as an option to help achieve the goal of 100 percent renewable energy.

 

Electricity rates have increased 49.1 percent since 2009 and Community Choice Energy may offer a solution by allowing local and publicly accountable control of energy decisions.

 

San Diego Unified's Sustainability Action Plans, "Dream Big Solutions for a Sustainable Future" are being developed to help reduce the district's environmental footprint with a goal towards net zero waste.

 

San Diego Unified continues to work on solar energy installations, LED lighting conversions, maximizing water conservation, purchasing local produce and other foods, establishing and joining large purchasing cooperatives, improving transportation sustainability, and supports the use of school gardens.

 

San Diego Unified is working to embed sustainability education for students and employees into everyday teaching and learning.

 

The Board of Education of the San Diego Unified School District supports the development of a San Diego Unified CAP in alignment with the City of San Diego CAP.

We have added more than 130 new people to the CCSN announcements list, mostly new contacts from our leafleting and petitioning at the 2015 UCSD Alumni Weekend. To all you who are new, welcome!

· First: JULY 15, 2 PM Meeting with UCSD Chancellor Khosla. 
For the FIRST TIME, representatives of the Che Cafe Collective and CCSN will meet with Khosla to see if he will call off the eviction. We need a big crowd to rally outside the meeting. · The legal appeal of the eviction (unlawful detainer) lawsuit ruling is progressing, slowly. In late May the court sent a bill of $500 for the preparation of the clerk's transcript of the trial. The collective paid the bill promptly. It should take 30-40 days for the transcript to be done (so, any time now). Opposing parties will then get notice of the schedule/deadline for submission of briefs. Then, it will be up to the appellate court to decide.

San Diego to host 30th Annual Convention of the Veterans For Peace

 

From August 5th through 9th, 2015, San Diego will be playing host to the 30th Annual National Convention of the Veterans For Peace, a national veteran's educational organization, dedicated to the cause of world peace by applying the concept of engaging conflict peacefully, without violence.  The theme of the convention is "Peace and Reconciliation in the Pacific", and will feature Seymour Hersh, noted investigative reporter, as the keynote speaker on Saturday night, August 8th.   All events are open to the public, but registration is required (http://vfpnationalconvention.org/).

 

The recently restored 1958 peace boat "The Golden Rule" will sail into San Diego Bay and will be present during the entire convention.   (http://www.veteransforpeace.org/our-work/vfp-national-projects/golden-rule-boat-project/).

 

Major events include the showing of the film "Pictures from a Hiroshima School Yard" (Wednesday night), the Opening Plenary and welcome at 9 AM on Thursday, the off-site Community Event at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego entitled "Peace at Home, Peace Abroad" on Thursday night, keynote address on Saturday night by Seymour Hersh, noted investigative journalist, and an International Reconciliation Ceremony on Sunday morning at the Joan Kroc Peace Center at the University of San Diego.

The national Veterans For Peace organization holds an annual convention each year in a different city, bringing together 300-500 veterans and associate members and their friends and families, for 5 days of socializing, networking, workshops, plenary sessions and a Saturday night banquet.  This is the first time that the local San Diego chapter has been honored to host the annual convention.   In addition to activities at the Town and Country Resort and Hotel, convention guests will be attending a variety of related events around San Diego, based on the theme of "Peace and Reconciliation in the Pacific".

JULY 13TH – SEPT. 14TH

What is a CSA?

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, and it's a great way for people to buy farm fresh goods directly from their local farmer (or urban farmer in our case!). When you join our CSA, you'll get a box of fresh produce every week for 10 weeks, all grown by our youth!  You'll also receive a newsletter in your bag filled with youth and garden updates as well as delicious recipe ideas.

Who does the CSA benefit?

The Second Chance Youth Garden runs a six week job training program for youth that have had involvement with the juvenile justice system. In hands-on garden based training, youth learn to seed, cultivate, transplant and harvest the fruits of their labor. Upon completion of program, each youth receives individual case management to work toward high school graduation, paid internship opportunities, part/full time work, and higher education. Each CSA subscription helps us employ and pay our youth, as well as benefits our local community and the land!

How do I get my CSA bag?

We require a minimum of five customers to start any new drop off locations at office buildings/organizations. All of our summer bags will be delivered to the following locations – Jacobs Center, Qualcomm and the First Church of the Brethren.

How much does a share cost?

The cost of our CSA share is $300 or $30/week for the ten week season.  If you are a resident of City Heights or Southeast San Diego (the neighborhoods our youth program serves), the cost is $250 for the 10 weeks or $25/week.  You are welcome to split the cost (and the contents of your bag) with a friend or neighbor and give us two checks for the sum of $300 or $250 however we do not currently have ½ shares as an option. Each bag contains 8-10 items/week.

and then mail your check to Second Chance at 6145 Imperial Ave San Diego, CA 92114. Checks should be made payable to Second Chance, please include "Youth Garden" on the memo line. You may also bring your check on the first drop off day, July 13th.
