March for Marriage Equality -- Unite to Repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)!
January 10, 2009, 10am, County Administration Building

JointheImpact.com, which called for the national day of protest against Prop 8 in November, has again called us all to action.  The march here in San Diego on November 15 was the largest in the nation and we have a lot of work to keep the cause of equality in the headlines.  So on January 10th, we'll take up the federal equivalent of Prop 8 -- the Defense of Marriage Act.  Please join us in a march and rally to remind President-elect Barack Obama that he has said he "supports repealing the Defense of Marriage Act."

Why the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)?  Because DOMA represents a Prop 8 type law at the federal level.  DOMA exists to define marriage as one man and one woman for any Federal purposes, including tax structure, federal student aid, immigration status, and about 1049 other rights (http://www.gao.gov/archive/1997/og97016.pdf).  For twelve years marriage has been defined federally as one man and one woman; that's not okay with me, and it shouldn't be okay with you either.

So we are gonna march, on January 10.

There will be a pre-rally at 10:00am in front of the County Administration Building.  Please join us for speakers and music before we march!  Step-off will be at 11:00am, as we march through downtown and past the Manchester Grand Hyatt.  Representatives from Unite Here, which has joined with the LGBT community in boycotting the Manchester Hyatt (www.sleepwiththerightpeople.org) will join us there as we continue to march through downtown and back to County Administration.  There will be a second rally at County Administration following the march, with additional speakers.  For those who are differently abled, there will be entertainment provided while the march is happening, at the rally point at County Admin.

Are you excited?  Because I am excited.  DOMA is Prop 8 federally, and we can't allow it!  Are you asking yourself how you can get involved?  Excellent!  There's a few things you can do:

The first thing is to spread the word!  There are fliers available to be delivered to you, already printed, that the wonderful Gabriel Conway will bring to you if you email him at indigabe@hotmail.com.  If you want some of these fliers, please let him know and he'll swing them by to you.

The second thing is to volunteer!  We need crowd control monitors for the march and rally.  Please email me to volunteer for the march, and please email me at sarabrooks@gmail.com.  If you'd like to volunteer for the rally portions, please email Wendy Sue at wsueb@aol.com.  Please include the word Volunteer in your subject line.  There will be two volunteer trainings held next week on Sunday and Tuesday evenings.  Volunteers need only attend one of the trainings.  Volunteers will get more information in their email later this week.

The last thing you can do is to show up!  San Diego has quite a reputation to live up to after we showed the largest march in the nation on November 15.  So bring your family, bring your friends, bring your barista and your babysitter and your mother's best friend's cousin too.  Equality is not just about LGBT issues -- it's about everyone being treated fairly.
