The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice invite you and your colleagues to participate in a consultation with Susan Braden, a senior official from the U.S. Department of State, who is scheduled to visit our community to LISTEN to our concerns about women, peace and security:

                        Saturday, October 8, 2011, 1:00 – 4:00 P.M.

In October 2000, the U.N. Security Council adopted Resolution 1325 which urges governments to include women in all aspects of peacemaking, peacebuilding and peacekeeping--and to create a National Action Plan for implementing U.N. SCR 1325. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton made a historic commitment to advance the status of women by developing a plan to implement this U.N. resolution. She has tasked her department and other agencies to draft a U.S. NAP and to seek input from civil society. Of importance to the State Department is to hear from us concerning the issues of immigration, violence against women, political participation of women, protection of women in armed services against sexual and gender-based violence, situation of refugee women, border considerations, human trafficking, small arms control, health care, environmental justice, implications of war and militarization on women in our community, costs of war and caring for veterans, etc.  

 

The consultation on October 8^th will be a three-hour session, including a presentation on U.N. SCR 1325, facilitated break-out sessions, statements from civil society representatives, and a report back to Ms. Braden. U.S. WILPF will provide a facilitator and recorder/note taker. Through this opportunity, it is hoped that the U.S. SCR 1325 NAP will NOT become a tool to make war safe for women, but will serve to advance the status of women and prevent future wars.

"Women, War & Peace" on PBS

"Women, War & Peace" will premiere on your local PBS station Tuesday nights from Oct. 11 to Nov. 8, 2011. In San Diego, it will air at 11 p.m.

Women, War & Peace is a bold new five-part PBS television series challenging the conventional wisdom that war and peace are men's domain. [SDCPJ] "Women, Media, Revolution" Forum Oct. 5 to 7

"WOMEN, MEDIA, REVOLUTION" FORUM

SAN DIEGO, CA: From October 5 to October 7, the University of San Diego's Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice will host "Women, Media, Revolution," a free public forum of films and panels exploring the perceptions of women reporting on and from conflict zones and how gender plays at all levels of coverage.

International panelists include traditional print and television journalists, alternative media network founders, bloggers and other social media contributors, as well as film directors capturing the challenges to the security and treatment of women in conflict situations like this year's Arab Spring. They will share their work for media outlets like Al Jazeera, NPR, The Guardian, The Times (London), and World Pulse, and the challenges of reporting and filmmaking in countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia.

Films including "Weapon of War," "The Sari Soldiers," and "The Price of Sex" will be screened followed by discussion with the directors.

Journalists will address questions such as:

Where are the women pictured with cell phones and posters during the uprisings now? What happens to reporters, their stories, their subjects, and citizens caught in conflict? Where does balanced and inclusive coverage come from, if corporate media does not cover stories about women and their role in changing societies?

One of the panels will include global reporters and young journalists linked via videoconference- ing from the sites where they are currently assigned and/or living. Women PeaceMakers from Haiti, India, Iraq and Kenya, who are in residence at the Institute for eight weeks, will respond in the final session to issues raised at the forum.

FROM 4:00-6:00 WE ARE ENCOURAGING EVERYONE TO MAKE THOSE PHONE CALLS, EMAILS (INFO BELOW) AND IF POSSIBLE ORGANIZE SOMETHING WITHIN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES. 4:00PM IS AN IMPORTANT TIME FOR THIS IS THE SET TIME FOR TROY DAVIS EXECUTION. THEN COME MEET WITH US DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO FOR THE LARGER DEMONSTRATION.

Community Organizers, Activists, Educators, Progressive Media, Organizations and etc.. have come together to organize an important event to SAVE THE LIFE OF TROY DAVIS.

BELOW IS THE SD COALITION ACTIVITY FOR THE EVENING OF THE EXECUTION OF TROY DAVIS WHO WAS DENIED CLEMENCY BY THE GEORGIA STATE PARDONS AND PAROLES. WE ARE INVITING ALL OF SAN DIEGO COMMUNITY TO ATTEND THIS IMPORTANT AND PIVOTAL EVENT TO STOP THIS EXECUTION OF AN INNOCENT LIFE AND PUT AN END TO ALL OPPRESSIVE SYSTEMATIC INSTITUTIONAL LAWS AND GOVERNMENTS.

We are mobilizing our communities to meet at Horton Plaza which is a central location to create mass media attention and create awareness on this injustice and all other injustices against people of color within the downtown setting of San Diego.

At exactly 6:00 pm we are meeting at 1st Avenue and West E Street
and at 6:15pm we will march around the corner to the Hall of Justice on West Broadway. We will chant for a while at Hall of Justice till 6:45pm and then turn on State Street back to Horton Plaza Mall for Speak-out and Candlelight Vigil for the remainder of the evening.

WE WILL ALSO BE PASSING OUT COMMUNITY GROUND RULES TO HELP MAINTAIN A RADICAL SOCIAL JUSTICE SPACE FREE FROM OPPRESSIVE RACIST, CLASSIST, SEXIST, HOMOPHOBIC, TRANSPHOBIC, ABELIST, ADULTIST, AGEIST, AND ETC. BEHAVIORS.

For your own local communities, campuses, schools, place of worship, friends, family, homes, business etc.. - we are asking you to mobilize in your own communities between the hours of 4:00-6:00 pm - (this will be at the same time as Georgia State's time of execution for Troy Davis) and then if possible to meet the coalition at Horton Plaza Mall at 6:00 pm.

However, your support can be done in multiple ways such as in the form of making phone calls to judge Penny Freesemann 912-652-7252 urging her to withdraw the death warrant against Troy Davis.

We have one more day to stop this execution, and we're not giving up. You should continue to take action from wherever you are:

1. Email and call the Board of Pardons and urge them to reconsider: 404-656-5651.

[SDCPJ] Urgent Support Grocery Store Workers -- TOMORROW!

Please pass this on widely! It is urgent that we are loud and rowdy and apply pressure. Negotiations will be going on and the more support we show for workers, the more likely the corporations will negotiate fairly. UFCW has given their 72-hour strike notice to Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons.  They plan to continue to bargain until Sunday at 7 p.m.  While we hold out hope that these final hours will produce a fair contract, we need to remind these Fortune 500 companies that we stand with and support the grocery workers.

Please support the 62,000 grocery workers from Santa Barbara to San Ysidro who face a looming strike.  Join UFCW Local 135 and the Labor Council as we stand in solidarity with their workers while they fight for a fair contract that maintains their health care benefits.

SDCPJ DECISION-MAKING PROCESS:

As a coalition, the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice is comprised of people from a wide variety of social, political, ideological, and cultural backgrounds. In order to come to decisions that encompass the diversity of opinions in our group, we work with a modified consensus model. At times, the process can feel tedious. It is up to each of us to minimize tediousness by avoiding repetition of points already voiced and recognizing that consensus does not necessarily mean that we discuss everything until everyone present agrees on every detail. The facilitator may wrap up a topic about which there are differences simply by asking if the group can accept a dominant position, even though some people still disagree. The goal of consensus is to come to decisions with which everyone is comfortable. This allows us to maintain as broad a base as possible and to not alienate any of our members.

Saturday 9/10

 

Just back from a planning meeting for 10/15 called by Education for All.
 
There were about 20 people at the meeting, including several from SDCPJ (Gabe, Josh, Hilary, Nikolai, me).  About half ot the attendees were students from City College - others from SDSU, UCSD, Cuyamaca.
 
We decided to organize an event around the slogans of "Stop the Cuts - End the Wars - Tax the Rich".  Of course, we are free to add addtional demands in our own name.  
 
Gabe brought 1000 SDCPJ fliers for 10/15, and we handed out most of them for people to redistribute.
 
So far no specfics for the event itself.  This should be discussed at the next planning meeting, which will be on Saturday, Sept 17, 12 noon, at City College lawn, Park Blvd and B Street.  We decided to try to spread the word as widely as possilbe this week, to build for the planning meeting on 9/17.
 
This should be an important meeting.  In addtion to deciding on the nature of the event itself, we will make plans for outreach and media.  I hope this will be on the agenda for the next SDCPJ meeting on 9/12. 
 
I will not be at either the 9/12 or 9/17 meeting, since I will be out of town  9/11 - 9/17 (going hiking over Bishop Pass in the Sierras with my daughter).
