We posted a story on this here: http://www.eastcountymagazine.org/node/13008 Also on our ECM Facebook Page. I am very glad to see these issues getting exposure broadly in SD.
The Environmental Justice movement of the past three decades has done an amazing job of educating the public about the polluting effects on human & environment of energy generation. Alternatives for fossil fuels & nuclear have been designed to reduce the negative impacts of carbon and radioactive emissions. The whole world has jumped onto the green bandwagon. Right? But have we made a difference in the local picture? Is the media reporting what is really going on? Are we reaching the tipping points? How do we build a movement for social & environmental justice?
Environmental activist say there is hope at all levels. The local communities are taking charge, helping to shape their own communities, there are national & international movements that are also gaining traction. Come & listen to what local environmentalists have to say on the most crucial issues of our time & discuss your own experiences & thoughts, from energy & climate change to the international movement protecting the Earth’s life sustaining ecosystems.
Energy Projects, Fracking and the “Rights of Mother Earth”
Activist San Diego
April 15th 7-9 PM
Joyce Beers Community Center
Exceptional speakers not to be missed! Monday the 15th
Donna Tisdale: Chair of the Boulevard Planning Group, co-founder, President of Backcountry Against Dumps, and Secretary of The Protect Our Communities Foundation. We already have 25 existing wind turbines that are disrupting sleep and making people ill within at least a 3-mile radius. Industrial scale wind turbines generate electrical, low-frequency noise and infrasound that invades homes and creates stress response reactions that damage people’s lives and well-being.
Terry Weiner : In my position with the Desert Protective Council, I am very well aware of the rush to the desert for remote, industrial-scale wind and solar development and can speak to the impacts. I can also say something on the public subsidies for these projects. I am a co-founder of Solar Done Right www.solardoneright.org as well as the Imperial County Conservation Coordinator for the Desert Protective Council (DPC). DPC is in an active lawsuit against the Ocotillo Wind Energy Facility
Carlos Pelayo: Organizer with the “Asociación de Jornaleros y trabajadores de casa.” Will speak about indigenous movements for respect of sacred sites and about the international movement towards the Rights of Mother Earth
Peg Mitchell: Member of the Public Policy Committee of SanDiego350.org as well as the Group Leader of the North San Diego County Chapter of Citizens Climate Lobby, organizer of the April 20th fracking event at Joyce Beers 5-8pm.
Bill Pate: Will speak on the UT and IVP's blatant disregard for the real story and failure to ask the tough questions. I can provide example news articles and responses to our group.
