"Cisco" made a statement that I could not stop thinking about. He said "We just want all those people who are worried about their next meal, who are worried where they will sleep, to know this: they are not forgotten. We are here for you. We are here to change the world." -- Very inspiring. (He has been living on the street for 44 years.)

NEWS

  • Occupy Christmas - Dec 23 - Occupy San Diego Strikes Back http://youtu.be/J-0uxKi6xsU -- The day after 4 arrests, a choking, a stomping and intimidation of peaceful protesters by the San Diego Police Department, Occupy San Diego strikes back with Occupy Christmas!

  • CHRISTMAS FOOD UPDATE
    • Thanks to Hollyhawk Cambia for organizing this.
    • POTLUCK BRUNCH - 11am - 12pm - thanks to John Kenney & friends. Please use Facebook Private Message (FPM) if you want to help!
    • XMAS DINNER - 5pm - 7pm - thanks to Tracey Reardon Odman & friends. Please FPM if you want to help serve or cook! Meal will include ham & potatoes.
    • THANKS TO YOU ALL! Much love to OSD, our houseless brothers, sisters and non-binary identified family smile

  • Some notes from the GA today.
    • John Kenney served as facilitator
    • Demands Committee -- will put out a document for further discussion soon. Anita Simon is the editor of this draft.
      • There was some discussion about changing the name of this to "Solutions" or "Goals" rather than "Demands". The latter implies that others will do it, when in reality, it is probably up to us.
    • Education Committee -- has and will continue to conduct debates and discussions on "demands" -- is on the schedule. Will be highlighting one issue each week. (However, tomorrow and next week will be on holiday schedule -- i.e. no teach-ins).
    • Police Interaction:
      • Police are afraid of internal affairs investigations. We need to report MORE. Citizens Review Board has the power to conduct investigations and punish "bad" officers.
      • Need a list of police officers with faces so we can identify police so complaints can be produced. Must gather this information when police are not in attack mode because it is hard to gather then.
      • In one case recounted at the GA, a homeless man had his belonging taken from him and filed a suit, and obtained $150,000 award from the court. We probably need to be more proactive in filing such suits.
    • Education Cte will have Mobile Book Mobile at Freedom Plaza every weekend.
    • Medical Cte will have personnel at the Plaza every Saturday from 10am to Noon, or later if needed.
    • No GA Planned for Xmas Day
    • Jeff Bates will serve as next GA facilitator

  • Police step up enforcement of 54.0110 "No objects on City Property" law at Freedom Plaza
    • MC § 54.0110 Unauthorized Enchroachments Prohibited
It is unlawful for any person to erect, place, allow to remain, construct, establish, plant, or maintain any vegetation or object on any public street, alley, sidewalk, highway, or other public property or public right-of-way, except as otherwise provided by this Code.
    • For example, some comments from FB:
      • Jason Snyder: Well I went down there with my livestreaming equipment, set it down next to me and put my arm on it. Sargent B. Cara claims that the moment I took my hand off of the box to rest my arm on it counted as 'abandonment' under MC 54.0110, which is total B.S.
      • Jason Snyder: Actually s.g. B. Cara was citing people for merely loosening their backpack while sitting without actually taking it off calling it abandonment and then telling us that if we ever came back to the Civic Center (FP) that we would be arrested. What Gustapo tactics. I thought this was supposed to be the 'land of the free'. What a lie.
    • When this happens, we should make immediate complaints. Download complaint form. These forms should be ON HAND at Civic Center Plaza and have the Sargent/officers help you fill it out. Of course, it would be fantastic if we had a complaint table for this sort of thing, but that sounds difficult if we can't have a table. Compliant forms are also in city hall available for pick up.
    • A COMPLAINT SHOULD GO IN FOR EVERY INAPPROPRIATE ARREST. We also need to follow up on these complaints. Can someone find out when the Police Oversight group meets?
    • In my conversations with some homeless men on Dec 24, I learned that the police have made the area around the Civic Center Plaza (five blocks on each side) a no-sleeping zone for the homeless. They are telling the homeless the reason they are being inconvenienced is because of Occupy San Diego. This has been going on for the past three nights. John said "pumpkinheads" (ambassadors) wake up the homeless in that area and have them move at least five blocks away. This despicable act by the police is apparently to set the homeless against OSD.

  • Occupy San Diego still reels from inappropriate arrests on Dec. 22.
    • Video of Raid and Arrests at Freedom Plaza. Three were arrested in this video. Andrew Fischer (AKA "Fish") was arrested at about 6am. One of them was choked and another was stomped on. http://youtu.be/Fu3oVBxMbFc
    • See more info here: Occupy San Diego Dec 22 Arrests, including a frame-by-frame analysis of out-of-control SDPD officers as they nearly rip Chris's head off. You have to see this to believe it.

Upcoming Events

  • 17 Jan 2012 - Million tent protest in Washington D.C.
    • Occupy Greyhound Update: OSD to Occupy Greyhound to OD.C. to be part of the 1 million tent protest. We are leaving on the 13th and returning in SD on the 25th, We have 12 people going and we were able to purchase 8 tickets from donations. We will still be collecting donations for the use of going to some tourist attractions while we are in DC as a group, in matching Occupy San Diego clothing hopefully. We are also working on getting ahold of all the local media stations so when we stop there should be coverage of our trip (hopefully). We are going to get with education committee to see if there can be some classes to make sure everyone is up to speed on all the important issues currently infesting our world. I am very thankful for all the support we have recieved from the community of people that could not go but wanted to see this trip become a reality. If you would like to know who is going PM me and I will ask everyone if they want me to inform the public on their intent to go to DC. (A few think the cops will target them to make it so they can not go). Again here is the Web page if you can donate more before the trip that would be great. https://www.wepay.com/group/view/90142 BIG HUGS AND HUGE THANKS

    • Video: police harassing vet with flag
    • Video: Police confiscate flag from Occupy SD protest
    • March schedule for Friday, Dec. 23 in an urgent email blast. About 100 people showed up, many with U.S. Flags, some with other flags. There was a United Nations Flag, a Veterans For Peace flag and a "corporate America" flag (stars are corporate logos).
    • Some flags were flown upside down, signaling distress. It is a common mistake to assume that is is disrespectful to fly a flag upside down. It is only means to indicate that the person flying it is in distress and needs help. Our nation is in distress, I think we can agree on that.
    • Some flags were equipped with standard metal (OMG) poles, like the $10 ones from Home Depot. Police said they would not arrest people for that during this event. How kind of them.
    • OSD marched to Federal Building at 5:30pm.
    • Terri Best said: If the pole was the target, why did the police not just take the pole? No opportunity was given to remove the flag. The Mayor of San Diego is using the police department to further his political agenda: "Shut down Occupy San Diego before the election year."

  • Barricades have been removed from around Freedom Plaza.

[SDCPJ] URGENT - Appeal to San Diego progressives - reclaim our rights and flag - today

I appeal to you as a San Diego progressive and activist and someone who loves this country. Right here in San Diego, the values that make this country great are under attack ... by the very people who are paid to protect us... the San Diego Police.

Their unconstitutional harassment and arrests of Occupy San Diego activists attempting to exercise the First Amendment has become too outrageous for us to sit silently by. Police within the last 36 hours have seized an American flag out of the hands of a veteran - saying the pole was too thick, arrested a person for burning sage in the Plaza, violently choked a videographer filming another arrest ... the list goes on.

Local veterans have called for a protest today - Friday the 23rd of Dec - at 4pm - to gather at 4th and B in downtown San Diego to reclaim our flag.

All progressives - those who can - must join with our vets to assert the Bill of Rights and our American flag.

Please join us - this is urgent.

Republican Crackup...bad for America

politics
The Huffington Post

Why the Republican Crackup is Bad For America

Posted: 12/21/11 08:25 AM ET

Two weeks before the Iowa caucuses, the Republican crackup threatens the future of the Grand Old Party more profoundly than at any time since the GOP's eclipse in 1932. That's bad for America.
The crackup isn't just Romney the smooth versus Gingrich the bomb-thrower.
Not just House Republicans who just scotched the deal to continue payroll tax relief and extended unemployment insurance benefits beyond the end of the year, versus Senate Republicans who voted overwhelmingly for it.
Not just Speaker John Boehner, who keeps making agreements he can't keep, versus Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who keeps making trouble he can't control.
And not just venerable Republican senators like Indiana's Richard Lugar, a giant of foreign policy for more than three decades, versus primary challenger state treasurer Richard Mourdock, who apparently misplaced and then rediscovered $320 million in state tax revenues.
Some describe the underlying conflict as Tea Partiers versus the Republican establishment. But this just begs the question of who the Tea Partiers really are and where they came from.
The underlying conflict lies deep into the nature and structure of the Republican Party. And its roots are very old.
As Michael Lind has noted, today's Tea Party is less an ideological movement than the latest incarnation of an angry white minority -- predominantly Southern, and mainly rural -- that has repeatedly attacked American democracy in order to get its way.
It's no mere coincidence that the states responsible for putting the most Tea Party representatives in the House are all former members of the Confederacy. Of the Tea Party caucus, twelve hail from Texas, seven from Florida, five from Louisiana, and five from Georgia, and three each from South Carolina, Tennessee, and border-state Missouri.
Others are from border states with significant Southern populations and Southern ties. The four Californians in the caucus are from the inland part of the state or Orange County, whose political culture has was shaped by Oklahomans and Southerners who migrated there during the Great Depression.
This isn't to say all Tea Partiers are white, Southern or rural Republicans -- only that these characteristics define the epicenter of Tea Party Land.
And the views separating these Republicans from Republicans elsewhere mirror the split between self-described Tea Partiers and other Republicans.
In a poll of Republicans conducted for CNN last September, nearly six in ten who identified themselves with the Tea Party say global warming isn't a proven fact; most other Republicans say it is.
Six in ten Tea Partiers say evolution is wrong; other Republicans are split on the issue. Tea Party Republicans are twice as likely as other Republicans to say abortion should be illegal in all circumstances, and half as likely to support gay marriage.
Tea Partiers are more vehement advocates of states' rights than other Republicans. Six in ten Tea Partiers want to abolish the Department of Education; only one in five other Republicans do. And Tea Party Republicans worry more about the federal deficit than jobs, while other Republicans say reducing unemployment is more important than reducing the deficit.
In other words, the radical right wing of today's GOP isn't that much different from the social conservatives who began asserting themselves in the Party during the 1990s, and, before them, the "Willie Horton" conservatives of the 1980s, and, before them, Richard Nixon's "silent majority."
Through most of these years, though, the GOP managed to contain these white, mainly rural and mostly Southern, radicals. After all, many of them were still Democrats. The conservative mantle of the GOP remained in the West and Midwest -- with the libertarian legacies of Ohio Senator Robert A. Taft and Barry Goldwater, neither of whom was a barn-burner -- while the epicenter of the Party remained in New York and the East.
But after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as the South began its long shift toward the Republican Party and New York and the East became ever more solidly Democratic, it was only a matter of time. The GOP's dominant coalition of big business, Wall Street, and Midwest and Western libertarians was losing its grip.
The watershed event was Newt Gingrich's takeover of the House, in 1995. Suddenly, it seemed, the GOP had a personality transplant. The gentlemanly conservatism of House Minority Leader Bob Michel was replaced by the bomb-throwing antics of Gingrich, Dick Armey, and Tom DeLay.
Almost overnight Washington was transformed from a place where legislators tried to find common ground to a war zone. Compromise was replaced by brinkmanship, bargaining by obstructionism, normal legislative maneuvering by threats to close down government -- which occurred at the end of 1995.
Before then, when I'd testified on the Hill as Secretary of Labor, I had come in for tough questioning from Republican senators and representatives -- which was their job. After January 1995, I was verbally assaulted. "Mr. Secretary, are you a socialist?" I recall one of them asking.
But the first concrete sign that white, Southern radicals might take over the Republican Party came in the vote to impeach Bill Clinton, when two-thirds of senators from the South voted for impeachment. (A majority of the Senate, you may recall, voted to acquit.)
America has had a long history of white Southern radicals who will stop at nothing to get their way -- seceding from the Union in 1861, refusing to obey Civil Rights legislation in the 1960s, shutting the government in 1995, and risking the full faith and credit of the United States in 2010.
Newt Gingrich's recent assertion that public officials aren't bound to follow the decisions of federal courts derives from the same tradition.
This stop-at-nothing radicalism is dangerous for the GOP because most Americans recoil from it. Gingrich himself became an object of ridicule in the late 1990s, and many Republicans today worry that if he heads the ticket the Party will suffer large losses.
It's also dangerous for America. We need two political parties solidly grounded in the realities of governing. Our democracy can't work any other way.

    • Arrests were apparently for no reason. People congregating on the steps. No warning or reason provided as to why they were arrested.
    • The actions of the Police were ridiculous, unwarranted, unacceptable. No conversation by the police or requests for change of behavior. The people were arrested for NO REASON AT ALL.
    • The following from a Facebook post. Please take action.

The San Diego police have received several calls this morning regarding the arrests last night. I asked the lady who I spoke to, to please ask the Police chief to in the least put a truce to this. Please keep placing calls. 619-531-2777. You will get a live person.

I was having an interesting conversation and it's worth the call. Please try to be insistent and persuasive without getting angry at the person who is answering the phone. I did get the sense that she is hearing all of us who called as she had repeated points from other callers. Point out to them how this video makes people understand that the PD can no longer be trusted. Make them understand that the police now come across as a "terrywrist"s against first amendment rights. Tell them what peaceful, non-violent people Chris and Alan are. Tell them that they are damaging not only the cities reputation but also lining themselves up for an expensive lawsuit they can't fiscally afford. Tell them that you no longer feel confident in telling your kids to trust the PD in an emergency, and that you now fear them too. Remind them that Occupy has standing been up for workers rights and benefits (including the PD) and remind them how these viral videos and news reports are being seen by citizens all over the country. Those same citizens are now making hard decisions about what kind of benefits and pay their police and fire departments get and how this press is pushing people to no longer support their employment packages. Heck 0 you should see the number of police layoffs there have been in NJ alone.

Polite, persistent and reasoned - stay the course and call folks!!!

PLEASE WRITE OR CALL!
Salam: Brothers and Sisters,

We need each of you to call up the White House and urge President Obama to veto the National Defense Authorization Act (H.R.1540)

Here is why: If this becomes law, it will turn back the clock up to eight hundred years on the basic right of each person to seek legal recourse before being locked up in jail, possibly forever. This law will allow the Government to detain, forever if they want to, any American citizen in America or in any corner of the World if he/she is suspected of terrorism, without allowing the citizen the right to challenge the Government in Court. This is an outrageous attack on rights which are guaranteed by the Constitution to all American citizens.

Please see details below in the Action Alert for the number to call and what to say.

Romin Iqbal,
Staff Attorney,

CAIR Action Alert: Ask President Obama to Veto Indefinite Detention of U.S. Citizens

(WASHINGTON D.C., 12/15/2011) -- The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is urging American Muslims and other people of conscience to contact President Obama and urge him to veto the National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 1540), which authorizes the military to arrest and indefinitely detain American citizens suspected of terrorism without charge or trial.
CAIR says such detentions could lead to American citizens being shipped off to Guantánamo Bay.
Today's request follows up on CAIR's December 6 action alert, which addressed similar concerns over a House-Senate conference committee's consideration of the same bill.
On Monday, that House-Senate conference committee released a revised version of the bill that received House approval on Wednesday by a vote of 283 to 136. The bill is anticipated to get Senate approval by early next week and will most likely reach the president's desk for final approval or veto by the end of the month.
Supporters of the legislation claim that it simply codifies existing presidential practices, such as indefinitely detaining American citizens suspected of terrorism. However, leading members of Congress and civil rights groups rallying against the bill assert that such presidential claims to detention powers are an overreach of executive authority and unconstitutional.
Sections 1021 and 1022 of the bill authorize the president to order the indefinite detention of American citizens, inside or outside of the United States, suspected of being members of al-Qaida, the Taliban or their affiliates without charges, a trial or any legal recourse.
"If the Senate had wanted to make clear that a U.S. citizen could not be detained forever without charge, it could have said so unambiguously, but it did not. At best, we are shooting dice with our liberties and hoping that a federal court, down the line, will rule that it really does mean what the sponsors of this bill say it means," said Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) ranking member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution.
"This legislation authorizes the military to indefinitely detain individuals without charge or trial, including the detention of U.S. citizens on U.S. soil. In short, what this bill does is it takes a wrecking ball to the United States Constitution and gives enormous power to the government or the state," said Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH).
In November, President Obama had threatened to veto an earlier draft of the bill due to mandates requiring the military custody, rather than civilian, of American citizens suspected of terrorism. However, after reviewing the revised bill, "the president's senior advisers will not recommend a veto," said White House Press Secretary Jay Carney.
"This act is ambiguous, inconsistent, and clearly unconstitutional. It's an overreach of executive authority and would allow American citizens suspected of terrorism to be arrested without charge or trial and shipped off to Guantánamo Bay," saidCAIR Government Affairs Coordinator Robert McCaw. "It is imperative that we act now and urge President Obama to veto this bill. It's his sworn duty to uphold and defend the rights and freedoms enshrined in the U.S. Constitution."

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUESTED: (As always, be polite and respectful.)
1. Ask the president to veto the bill
Call the president: 202-456-1111
Email: Click here
Talking points:
  • Mr. President, I urge you to honor your original pledge and veto the National Defense Authorization Act as it sanctions the indefinite detention of American citizens without charge or trial.
  • I believe that it is unconstitutional for the military to police or indefinitely hold American citizens without allowing them their constitutional rights to a fair and speedy trial and hearing the charges brought against them.
2. Inform your friends and family by forwarding this alert to at least five other people. Tell them you took action and ask them to do the same.
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

Congress is not preparing to defend the people of the United States. It is planning to protect the capital of American speculators and investors.... Incidentally this preparation will benefit the manufacturers of munitions and war machines.... Strike against war, for without you no battles can be fought! Strike against manufacturing shrapnel and gas bombs and all other tools of murder! Strike against preparedness that means death and misery to millions of human beings! LEFT HOOK - AMERICAN FALL

Left Hook

The American Fall

By Walter Davis
20 December 2011
San Diego, CA

They celebrated in glee as leader after leader, government after government came under pressure in The Middle East as the Arab Spring unfolded. Now, enter the American Fall. The Occupy Movement is well underway and appears to be here to stay. Mainstream media puppets voice the same message, “They are not stating a clear objective”, as if they do not understand the plight of the American people.

The grievances are quite clear to those who care.

Millions of Americans have had their homes stolen by banks in foreclosure actions, the same banks that received bail out tax dollars. Insurance company lobbyists have ensured that millions of American citizens are impeded from acquiring quality health care. Food prices continue to skyrocket; a bag of frozen strawberries can cost $11.00. Greedy gasoline companies fuel cars and inflated prices by increasing prices to over $4.00 per gallon for gasoline.

While half the American population suffers in poverty/low income 3, the Huffington Post reports that CEO pay has risen 27 to 40 percent in just the last year 1. An Associated Press report indicated that “Among those requesting emergency food assistance, 51 percent were in families, 26 percent were employed, 19 percent were elderly and 11 percent were homeless.3”

A CEO making $5 Million Dollars a year is making $13699.00 per day.

In California, The National Center for Children in Poverty sights the low income level for a family of four at $44,100 per year2, a little more than three days pay for an average CEO. The same report indicates that 54% of Black children (280,607), 60% of Hispanic children (2,759,940), 28% of Asian children (267,505), 54% of Native American children (16,267) and 22% of White children (586,846) live in low-income families in California.

Elderly people who survived World War II and the violent 20th century are now finding themselves turned away when they need help to eat; a national shame.

These statistics are staggering. In San Diego County, El Cajon has consistently been at the top of the poverty list on the Center for Policy Initiative poverty reports.

While the greedy million dollar CEOs of American companies flourish in their offices in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Diego, their gift of poverty spreads on an international level. In the Congo, the living wage is $300 per month4. Most workers make less than a dollar a day in gold mines and other dangerous jobs in which children are used in labor. If a $5 million dollar CEO gave up just one day’s pay, 46 families in The Congo would have living wages for a month.

Migrant workers are paid only a fraction of a living wage in the United States and worldwide. Large corporations like Philipp Morris and Sara Lee victimize poor people worldwide in the coffee, food and tobacco industries with low wages while CEOs get huge bonuses7, 8.

According to a recent report in the Nation of Change, in 2010 17.2 million American households suffered hunger (classified as food insecure)5 – the highest level on record.

According to Wikipedia, the top 1% saw their incomes rise 275% between 2007 and 2010. The bottom fifth saw an increase of only 18%6

The food industry is poisoning the American people with automated processes and imports from overseas markets that do not observe food safety.

A recent report by Dr. OZ supported by Consumer Reports confirms that apple juice imported from China and other countries contains more than six times the allowed amount of arsenic. The highest levels were reportedly found in Gerber Baby apple juice 9. The way wheat is processed in this country is resulting in the deaths of many Americans as indicated in a report by M.H. Panhwar 10.

There are numerous reports of lead toys from China and poisoned candy from Mexico and antifreeze in imported toothpaste..all in the name of saving a buck in processing. Republican efforts to stall leadership appointments in consumer protection agencies are criminal. Our government has failed to protect the American people from corporate greed.

Government officials eagerly send American young people to die overseas in campaigns to promote “freedom” and voting rights.

These same officials are attempting to eliminate as many young people’s rights to vote in America by employing voter suppression 11, 12. GOP officials in many states are targeting the population segments that are likely to vote for Democrats by developing aggressive suppression tactics.

These include creating tougher voter ID requirements; young people with college not state IDs because they are studying in a new state, elderly people who do not have birth certificates because they were not issued one at the time of birth. Hurdles are being created to stop people from getting state IDs including charging $200 for birth certificates and steep fees for IDs to target the poor, minorities and poor Whites.

GOP officials are attempting to intimidate voter registration groups like Acorn and the League of Women Voters by using steep fines for minor registration errors. They are also attempting to eliminate same-day registration. They want to curtail early voting and ban previously convicted people from voting as Florida did during the Bush election by throwing out thousands of legitimate voter’s ballots.

State budgets for polling and registration offices have been gutted due to tight funds. People who have lost jobs and suffered foreclosed homes are finding their lives in upheaval. Many have new addresses and cannot register or they will wait until the last minute to register and find that they cannot due to ID requirements.

So while young Americans go overseas to fight wars for the Corporatocracy to ensure the safety and voting rights of foreign citizens, more young people are dying on the streets of Chicago and New Orleans monthly than in all the service men killed in all of the current wars. These deaths are the result of misguided drug laws that punish citizens perpetually and waste tax payer money.

While mainstream news puppets continue to show the destruction of the American family as a failure of “moral” standards, they fail to point out the corruption of the family court systems. CPS and family court judges as well as other attorneys are making salaries averaging $149,000 per year and up. One does not have to look far to see the numerous Facebook groups and other grassroots organizations that are bringing the criminal activity of the family courts to the forefront. A good example of this is the California Coalition for Families and Children http://www.thepubliccourt.com 13.

In a barbaric method, this country continues to allow a court system to put people to death even when it cannot fairly decide minor divorce cases. This country still puts people in prison for having a plant while allowing toxic alcohol and cigarettes to remain on the market.

The American people have a plethora of legitimate complaints regarding their liberty, pursuit of happiness and financial well being. We saw the Arab Spring. Now, we see the American Fall. Could this be an indication of the fall of America or, are the American people approaching a much more humane, higher level of civilization? Do the American people have the temerity to demand a civilization where people are valued more than money?
