Border Angels Call Out, Fire!

Enrique Morones

10:23 AM (4 hours ago)

BORDER ANGELS CALL OUT, FIRE!

This past week we have been in contact with our migrant brethren in North County Canyons and other fire areas. Please help us help them.  Just as we did in 2007 and several other occasions, we are calling out to all to help in these efforts.

This Saturday we will go to North County to leave water, non perishable food and other emergency aid we can provide. Please join us by donating or joining us as we return to North County canyons where we first started our work in 1986.

Please RSVP as we may have updates and limitations due to developing situation. Several friends have been evacuated but just as we did in 2007 and other occasions, HELP!  The lives of our migrant brethren are just as important as anyone else.

We will again meet at 1015am at our offices THIS SATURDAY 5/17/14 (2258 Island Ave, San Diego) and head to North County. We are also in touch with our media friends to relay information EN ESPANOL, MIXTECO and ENGLISH.

GENTE UNIDA is one of many coalitions in region, and we again ask others to join us. Our 65 plus partners have been activated and have been working in respective areas.

Thanks again to all for your work and support. For more information or donations please see website or contact Dulce our coordinator copied here. Gracias todos, Si Se Puede ! enrique, border angels & GENTE UNIDA (619) 269-7865 or borderangels website BORDER ANGELS PO BOX 86598 SAN DIEGO CA 92138

[SDCPJ] NO DRONE DEMONSTRATIONS CANCELLED! SATURDAY SUMMIT WILL BE HELD.

Dear Friends,

Due to the wildfire situation and the County-wide emergency, we are canceling:

--Today's demonstration at the Federal Building and tonight's Overpass Light Brigade Action (5/15/14)
--Friday's demonstration at Northrop Grumman (5/16/14)

WE WILL STILL HOLD THE NO DRONES CONVERGENCE/SUMMIT ON SATURDAY (5/17/14), 9:30 A.M. TO 2 P.M. AT THE FIRST CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN, 3850 Westgate Place, SD 92015. We hope you will attend this summit and help us plan a rescheduling of the demonstration, as well as help plan future events.

We will be rescheduling the demonstrations.  Unfortunately we have been overcome by events and feel it would be ineffective and insensitive to hold the demos while our community's attention is elsewhere.

We hope for an end to the fires and send our sympathies to those who have lost their homes and our deep respect and appreciation to our firefighters and other emergency services.

[SDCPJ] Anti-militarist Web site recently updated

This is to let you know that NEW articles and updated content have recently been posted at http://www.comdsd.org/, the Web site of the San Diego-based Committee Opposed to Militarism and the Draft (COMD).

The current update includes three articles from the latest issue of COMD's printed newsletter, Draft NOtices:

- "Community Says 'No' to Another Military Academy," by Libby Frank, describing an official voter referendum passed by Chicago-area residents opposing the conversion of their local middle school into a Marine Corps academy.

- "JROTC Seeks Special Authorization to Teach Physical Education in California" by Isidro Ortiz, outlining an attempt to get state approval for JROTC instructors to teach PE in their military training classes.

- "Linkage of Draft Registration to California Driver's License Is Proposed Again," an alert regarding legislation making its way through the California state legislature.

In addition to the above three topics, the current printed version of Draft NOtices includes articles on: a lawsuit by U.S. sailors who were exposed to nuclear contamination in Japan; efforts by war contractors in San Diego to roll back a community plan that reduces exposure to toxic waste; and the firing of a teacher over statements made to JROTC cadets about sexual assaults in the military.

To order the complete printed version of Draft NOtices, visit the Web site's Draft NOtices page.

We'd love to get your feedback

We recently launched our latest quest focusing on what drones mean to San Diego and its economy. It's already clear we've got a significant drone footprint here.  In 2011 alone, Department of Defense contracts for unmanned systems brought at least $1.3 billion to our region.

We're hoping to delve further into local drone developments, as well as the privacy and human rights concerns tethered to the industry.

But before we dive in more, we'd like to find out what you think about unmanned systems, what you already know about them and what you'd like to learn.

We'd love if you could weigh in with this quick survey here.

California's 52nd Congressional District is no haven for incumbents - Los Angeles Times

Ready-Made Residences: 14 of the Coolest Prefab Homes

Kishana Holland

Kishana Holland

This lady was on the show Borderland. Even after her experience, she seemed anti immigrant. I used to share her views until I learned the true plight of immigrants...they are not immigrating, they are fleeing to this country. We need to look at a few facts:

  • People are only making $4 per day in their home countries due to NAFTA/ CAFTA and greedy US BASED companies..yet they are expected to pay THOUSANDS IN IMMIGRATION FEES
  • Even if they could pay..the waiting list is 15 to 20 years long for processing.
  • They have a choice, risk being raped, killed or starved or move on to a better life
  • Many are dying in the desert (young kids, 50 year old women) nice people!
  • We MUST change immigration policy!
Please watch Borderland when you can.

URGENT - Fast Food Workers Go On Strike!
Thursday, May 15th

Friends,

Support hard working San Diego Fast- Food Workers going on strike, Thursday, May 15th !!!!   Front line fast food workers in San Diego are living in poverty while working in a $200 billion industry.  Workers on six continents are joining the movement for higher pay and rights on the job at restaurants like McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, and KFC.  San Diego joins 150 other U.S. cities that are supporting workers seeking dignity and justice.   It's scary to walk off the job!  The workers are nervous and fearful.  The chaplaincy and support of ICWJ members gives them courage and calm.   They are not alone.  The workers need support and encouragement.

There will be 3 STRIKE ACTIONS on Thursday the 15th at three separate restaurants in San Diego.   THEY ARE ALL IMPORTANT.  Please place the following times and locations on your calendar.

Logistics:
Rabbi Laurie, Lisa, and ICWJ Board Members will be at all three events. Please wear your clergy/religous attire.

The ICWJ is sponsoring the middle event at 9:30 a.m.   If you have to choose only one, please participate in this one.  We are offering our prayers in the drive-thru with Reverend  Beth Johnson, ICWJ President, presiding.  She will help us greet the morning with the universal salutation prayer for the  striking workers on site and throughout the world.

The schedule of STRIKE ACTIONS is as follows:

5:45 a.m. Press Conference
Burger King
650 Gateway Center Drive, San Diego  92102
