[SDCPJ] Let's not forget about nuclear disarmament!
Congress is at a turning point. In the last 16 months, lawmakers have ratified the New START treaty to reduce the number of deployed nuclear weapons, increased funding to prevent these weapons' spread, and blocked the start of a $5 billion nuclear weapons facility.
Under pressure to cut the federal deficit, Congress and the administration are questioning whether the U.S. should continue to spend billions of dollars a year to maintain 5,000 nuclear warheads and the systems to launch these weapons at unknown enemies.
Yet lawmakers need to hear that constituents support this progress and want more. This edition of the Washington Newsletter covers the prospects for the signing of a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, discusses the mounting tensions with Iran, and lays out a blueprint for a world without nuclear weapons.

[SDCPJ] Fwd: Bradley Manning at Ft. Meade, July 16-20
From: "Brian Sonenstein, Firedoglake" <act@firedoglake.com>
Date: Jul 9, 2012 1:54 PM
Subject: Bradley Manning at Ft. Meade, July 16-20
To: "Cathy Mendonca" <cmendonca@riseup.net>
Dear Cathy,
Should Bradley Manning spend life behind bars because any 'enemy' on the internet could potentially access the intelligence he is alleged to have leaked?
It's an argument we hope to hear Judge Denise Lind reject during his next pretrial hearing, July 16-20th.1 If the judge upholds this argument, it will be another serious setback for Bradley and a troubling interpretation of law that could have serious ramifications for the future of whistleblowing, journalism and internet freedom.
As always, FDL's Kevin Gosztola will be at Ft. Meade, Maryland, bringing his unparalleled coverage of these historic court proceedings to the world -- but we need your help to get him there.
Click here to donate: https://secure.firedoglake.com/page/contribute/manning-general
The information Bradley has been accused of leaking has had tremendous value to democracy movements around the world, and we should make sure future whistleblowers feel safe to follow suit.
Yet, in court, Bradley is portrayed as a criminal and a traitor for allegedly exposing the dark underbelly of the war on terror. Aside from a recent victory in which Judge Lind demanded the government prove it is providing the defense with fair access to exculpatory evidence, the government seems to have choreographed these court proceedings in hopes of convicting him with little backlash.
The scope and outcome of Bradley's proceedings will have a significant impact on whistleblowing rights moving forward; we cannot let these assaults on first amendment speech to go quietly unanswered.
The government's continued success in denying Manning's right to a full defense has been shocking, and it seems exposing the government's questionable tactics and arguments to public scrutiny has been one of the only means of pushing back. That's why Firedoglake needs your help to be there, reporting from Ft Meade and rallying the public's attention to this historic case.
We are proud to have been working hard for nearly 2 years to bring Bradley Manning's story to the public, and sincerely thank you for your essential support that's made it all possible.
In solidarity,
Brian Sonenstein
Director of Online Activism,

[SDCPJ] July 16th @ 7pm: Activist SD report-back from RIO + 20 Earth Summit & the Peoples Summit in Brazil! "No War, No Warming"
Activist San Diego member
just back from RIO + 20 Earth Summit and
the Peoples Summit in Brazil!
What is Rio + 20? Rio+20 was a three-day summit that took place from June 20 - 22, organized by the United Nations to tackle environmental and economic issues. Its name signified that it was held in Rio de Janeiro 20 years after a similar "Earth Summit" in the same city. The biggest U.N. conference in years, it has been considered an illegitimate process of finding solutions to the world’s worst crisis.
What were the specific outcomes? The official summit produced a document that ignored the demands of civil society. According to government negotiators, there is no other alternative for the green economy. Social and environmental movements called the official agenda “the greed economy” since it attempts to intensify, not reverse, carbon emissions, displacement of indigenous people, deforestation, and climate change through the commodification of nature.
What happens after Rio? For 5days prior to the official summit, and two days after, the social, environmental and indigenous movements also had a side event called Peoples Summit. In it, grassroots movements defined a new agenda for the peoples of the planet; we can no longer react to what the world leaders are imposing on the rest of us. We must act to define our own agenda based on respect for all peoples and cultures and for Mother Earth.
Find out how to GET INVOLVED in the
"No War, No Warming" campaign!
Come hear from environmentalist and social justice activist Jorge Glackman about
Rio+20 at the July 16th ASD General Meeting 7 PM at the
Joyce Beers Center in Hillcrest 3900 Vermont Street San Diego, CA 92103 to learn more, or visit for more info see www.activistsandiego.org

[SDCPJ] Happy 4th! Be Patriotic This Year
Glad you're an American? Rights granted by the Constitution, so hard-won through history . . . Today across our nation, some states are making it harder to register to vote; and if you can be registered, harder to actually cast a vote. Then, if you're lucky enough to be able to CAST a vote, you have to doubt the safety and sanctity of your vote. Electronic voting is removed from public control, in the hands of private contracts. This is a reversal of our history. Want to be patriotic? Speak out to protect your and every citizen's ability to vote, and the ability for votes to count as actually cast. Be patriotic this 4th! And then celebrate! |

Friday, July 6th, 6:30–8:30 pm
Special Guest:
Ben F. Burkett is president of the National Family Farm Coalition (NFFC) in the U.S., and a cooperative-marketing-specialist member of the Federation of Southern Cooperatives Land Assistance Fund. It defends small-scale sustainable agriculture as a way to promote social justice and dignity. It strongly opposes corporate driven agriculture and transnational companies that are destroying people and nature. La Via Campesina comprises about 150 local and national organizations in 70 countries from Africa, Asia,
Europe and the Americas. Altogether, it represents about 200 million farmers. It is an autonomous, pluralist and multicultural movement, independent from any political, economic or other type of affiliation.

[SDCPJ] CALL YOUR REPS - Occupy Movement must make final push to pass a ROBUST HOMEOWNERS BILL OF RIGHTS in CA
CALL OUR reps. & Save Our Homes now!!
Tomorrow represents one of the biggest days for the Occupy Movement here in California.
We The People must make sure OUR representatives pass a robust HomeOwners' Bill of Right NOW!!

======
As you may know by now, the CA Homeowners Bill of Rights passed out of the Joint Committee on Wednesday morning!
ALL OUR EFFORTS MADE THIS BILL PASS! A staff member stopped one of our Occupy members in the hallway at the State Capitol in Sacramento on Monday to tell him that our OFF action (With OSD & ASD participation) in front of Senator Calderon's office on June 8 was the reason the bill was going to pass. The bill was destined to die in committee, but we turned it around! The attention we drew to the critical issue made the difference. What we do matters. (Thanks Carlos, Michelle, Cathy, Suzanne, etc., etc.)
See 252Fprotesters-flood-the-state-capitol-steps-demanding-a-halt-foreclosures-29788450.html
There are two bill numbers with the same language Senate: SB 900, Assembly: AB 278. The bill's language has been posted to the legislature's website and you can read it here. Key provisions stayed in the bill thanks to your efforts:
Prohibitions to dual tracking -- loan modifications must be evaluated and decided before any movement forward on foreclosures.
Single point of contact requirements designed to end the banks' routine runaround.
Private right of action, enabling homeowner to sue banks directly for wrongdoing.
Big banks that signed the settlement agreement with the state's Attorneys General are NOT exempt from accountability for individual harm.
Homeowners have recourse to stop a trustee sale if they reasonably suspect fraud.
Let's Push This One Over The TOP!
Multiple Occupy Movements across the state have rallied over the last month in a sustained effort to get a strong HomeOwners Bill of Rights with several provisions to protect homeowners against greedy bankster FRAUDclosure through the State legislature. On Monday the Bills finally make it to the floor. Remember the successful actions by OSD & ASD that got Vargas to step down from the Joint Committee early last month?
While these measures are less than we would have hoped, as witnessed by the bankster whining and protestations, (See link below) this is the most substantive set of bills in the nation.
