Tomorrow San Diego nurses are holding an event outside Congresswoman Susan Davis' office to appeal to her to vote no on Fast Track.  The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a major international trade deal shrouded in secrecy, and poses a major threat to all of our health and safety laws.  It could vastly restrict affordability of prescription medications, and essentially override many of our laws and regulations.  See the attached flier.  The Senate has already voted to allow a 'fast track' vote.  We are appealing to House members to vote no to 'fast track' and to demand transparency before any vote on the deal.  The House is likely to vote next week.   Would be great if you can join us!  Will last about 45 mins to an hour.  Please wear red and bring a friend!

The San Diego Veterans For Peace are in urgent need of housing for veterans who are attending our upcoming Veterans For Peace National Convention, to be held August 5- 9, 2015.  The convention will be held at the Town and Country Hotel in Mission Valley, so accommodations nearby would be great.  Can you help? A room, a backyard, or ???? Best would be with food and transportation to the Mission Valley Town and Country each day, but merely the offer of a room and a shower would be great!

[SDCPJ] Automatic draft registration passes California Assembly

AB 82, the bill that would automatically register males for a possible future military draft when they apply for or renew a California driver's license, passed the California Assembly by a vote of 73 to 2. This came after the bill was amended to weakly address some of the criticisms expressed by opponents during two legislative committee hearings.

There were three key amendments:

 

1. Language was added that requires SSS to cover all the expenses for the first year, including the cost of modifying the records system and printing new license application forms. (Continuing expenses after that would presumably be covered by Dept. of Motor Vehicles funds; however, the state constitution prohibits those funds from being used for purposes unrelated to transportation and traffic law enforcement.)

 

2. Language was added requiring SSS to sign a memorandum of understanding stating that it will not refer the personal information required for registration to the United States Citizenship and       Immigration Services. (Such an MOU would conflict with the fact that the SSS Privacy Act Statement that is on every registration form says just the opposite: SSS declares that USCIS is one of the agencies with which it DOES share information!)

 

3. Language was added asserting that license applicants will be able to opt out of automatic SSS registration by visiting an SSS web page within 21 days of applying for their Calif. license or license renewal. (However, SSS has historically denied people the option of withdrawing their registration, and there is no such form on the SSS web site. A state legislature has no power to force SSS to change this policy, but if SSS did create an online opt-out mechanism, anyone who used it would possibly be providing evidence that could be used to prove that they willfully violated the registration law.)

 

Many of the votes in favor of AB 82 were secured with factual misrepresentations made by SSS and the bill's supporters. For example, it was claimed that automatic draft registration would provide a path to citizenship for undocumented students, when in fact under current federal law these individuals cannot apply for citizenship even if they register with SSS!

 

Bills similar to AB 82 have been proposed in California six previous times, all of which were eventually killed when they did not advance beyond the final appropriations committee.

Border Reality Visit

Sun. June 7th, 9:30am to 4pm

A special tour to introduce "the border" and how it impacts the people of our region. 

This visit is planned for supporters and members of the Peace Resource Center, Church of the Brethren, and San Diego Friends Meeting. Our colleagues from AFSC San Diego will be leading us. There will be three stops along the border on the U.S. side and time to talk together at the end with lunch. More information is available in the "Tips and Guidelines" document.

     - Experience how the border & US laws affect families who've been separated

9:30 am – arrive no later than 9:30 at the Peace Campus (3850 Westgate Pl). 

     – We have a 15 passenger van and a few cars lined up to provide transportation. 

10:30 am – 1st Stop, Virginia Street Mall 

10:45 am – 2nd Stop, Water Treatment Plant 

11:00 am – 3rd Stop, Friendship Park 

12 noon – Discussion at the Park, info about the monument 

1:00 pm – worship or garden visit (based on availability)

1:30 pm – Lunch together (food will be provided, requesting $10 donation)

     – Van leaves when we finish 

4 pm? – projected arrival back to campus sometime between 3-4pm

Considerations for the day

     - BRING: plenty of water & U.S. identification (driver's license or CA ID are ok)

     - WEAR: sunscreen, a hat or sun visor, comfortable clothing and walking shoes

     - We will *NOT* travel into Mexico, however U.S. identification is needed to access portions of the border tour. 

     - We expect to be able to drive into the park. However, if we receive any kind of rain between now and then we may have to walk, so walking shoes are advised.

     - We are trying to be as friendly as possible for all ages, but are aware of limitations for young children and people with mobility challenges. Those with children or challenges are invited to consider the schedule and join us for portions that you are able. Contact us with questions.

I watched this video intently on Monday, during Memorial Day.

Eloquent speaker after eloquen speaker came to the podium and I had a lot to take away. Ron Dellums, Pat Shroder, Tom Hayden, Wayne Smith...gave me much to ponder.

My take away: We much challenge all form of injustice. We need a mass movement to counter injustice and to secure peace. Those of us who are more aware than others must work to bring others from niavity to knowledge to movement to change. We cannot segregate our moral or ethical concerns....All Forms of Injustice Must Be Challenged (MLK).

We have suffered the burden of ignorance, the burden of oppression...we do not have to suffer the burden of injustice. Peace, is the absence of War, the presence of justice, the public demonstration of justice and an absence of those conditions that give rise to war.

Please focus on this and share.

I have determined that my position in this is to be a voice for the people. A voice of hope, liberty, love, compassion, empathy...and justice. I am weary of asking for help. I will continue, even if I am the only one trying.

On May 28, 2010, my husband and father of my 5 children was brutally beaten and tortured at the San Diego border by federal agents. Days later Anastasio Hernandez Rojas died. The San Diego coroner's office described Anastasio's death as a homicide and found that he had "several loose teeth; bruising to his chest, stomach, hips, knees, back, lips, head and eyelids; five broken ribs; and a damaged spine."
 
 Border agents killed my husband. My family and I have not been the same ever since. To this day, our children ask, "Why did they kill my daddy?" and I've been fighting to find answers as well. We are still seeking justice since the case still has not been resolved. Were it not for a courageous eye-witness who recorded a video showing a dozen agents beating him while he was handcuffed on the ground, and 36,000 people signing our petition, I'm not sure his case would have ever been investigated.

 Since 2010, the year Anastasio was killed, at least 39 people have died as a result of encounters with Customs and Border Protection officers and many more have suffered serious injuries from such brutal use-of-force.

 Many of these families, like ours, don't get answers and agents are not disciplined for killing mothers or teenage kids as young as 15 - families such as those of  Jose Gutierrez, Valeria Munique Tachiquin and Carlos la Madrid. We've joined together in this fight and as the federal government attempts to discourage us from seeking answers, we grow more determined to struggle. Now, we invite you to stand with us to strengthen the call for justice and accountability in our border communities to stop the brutality.

Please join us in a Day of Action to Stop Border Brutality on May 28, 2015 5 pm at Balboa Park (6th and Laurel St, San Diego), so that the voices of border families can be heard across the country.
