[SDCPJ] Sunday Oct. 7!

OPEN the attachments - PASS ON to YOUR FRIENDS AND YOUR NETWORK!
Oct. 7 marks eleven years of unbroken invasion, war and military occupation of Afghanistan.  Vets for Peace, the San Diego Coalition for Peace & Justice, Occupy San Diego and other organizations will conduct a protest on Sunday Oct. 7, at the San Diego Civic Center and the Midway in downtown San Diego.  SAVE THIS DATE on your calendar.  Pass the word, and be prepared to participate.  IT IS VITAL to show that this prolonged, unwanted military occupation, with continued needless death, needs to end.  An end will not happen without popular pressure, and your voice.
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS BE THERE – save the date on your calendar!  PASS THIS ON to your friends and networks!

[SDCPJ] Shut San Onofre! Encinitas City Council unanimously approves letter to NRC

The Encinitas, California, City Council unanimously approved a letter tonight to the NRC calling on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to conduct a public, transparent license amendment hearing on San Onofre. A license amendment is a formal, open and legally adjudicated procedure that would allow for independent expert review of the significant modifications to the replacement steam generators. Under NRC rules, a license amendment is required for major design changes to replacement equipment like those Edison made to these replacement components.   The replacement generators were not "like for like" as Edison presented them to regulators, but instead were substantially altered.

This request was added after the public urged the City Council to modify its proposed letter to make it stronger.  Over 25 citizens and activists attended the meeting to express their concerns about San Onofre.  Although our time was cut, all of our speakers were outstanding.  Special thanks to Del Mar Councilman, Don Moser, who came and shared what the Del Mar City Council passed on Monday night.

I'll post a copy of the Encinitas CC letter as soon as a revised copy is ready.

Thank you to all who showed up tonight and who have e-mailed and called the City Council.  This is my home town and I'm proud that our city representatives have taken this important step in joining with other elected officials who are taking action on behalf of the health and safety of their constituents!

[SDCPJ] Shut san Onofre: Del Mar City Council unanimously passes resolution on San Onofre!

Shut San Onofre:

Last night, 9/25/12, the Del Mar, California, City Council unanimously passed the following resolution. There were many "whereas's," but here's the gist! Now on to the Encinitas City Council this Wednesday night!

"NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Del Mar urges
the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to require that Edison undergo a public,
transparent license amendment hearing regarding the replacement steam
generators, before the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station is allowed to
restart; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of Del Mar strongly
encourages the California Public Utilities Commission to: 1) expeditiously initiate
and complete an Order Instituting Investigation regarding the costs and reliability
of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station and to compare the San Onofre
facility to other energy sources used today and throughout the current licensing
duration; and 2) protect ratepayers from being held responsible for errors and/or
malfeasance by San Onofre Nuclear Generating Stations's operator, which led to
faulty replacement steam generators being installed, ongoing outage expenses,
and continuing repair costs; and 3) immediately take the San Onofre power plant
out of the rate base; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that additional incentives and programs are
urgently needed to support the rapid installation of new power generation, power
savings, and grid stabilizing technologies, which together can serve as an
alternative to San Onofre; and that these new electricity solutions should
prioritize efficiency and renewable energy resources, per the State of California's
load order and mandated targets, and should also prioritize local, distributed
generation, per Governor Brown's Clean Energy Plan.

PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of
Del Mar, California, at a Regular Meeting held the 24 th day of September 2012."

conscientious objectors need our support

War Resisters' International, London, 21 September 2012

Kimberly Rivera

Kimberly RiveraKimberly RiveraKimberly Rivera, who served with the US Army in Iraq before developing a conscientious objection, has been taken into military custody on her return to the USA yesterday.
Kimberly went absent without leave between deployments in 2007, travelling to Canada with her husband and children, where they claimed refugee status. In January 2009 this was rejected, and she was ordered to leave the country or face deportation. She appealed this decision, but on Monday 16 September a Canadian Federal Court judge denied her request for a stay of removal, finding the possibility of her arrest and detention in the U.S. to be only "speculative".
Kimberley presented herself at the border between Gananoque in Ontario and Fort Drum in New York, according to the War Resisters Support Campaign (http://resisters.ca/uncategorized/conscientious-objector-to-the-iraq-war...).
She is likely to be court-martialled for desertion and jailed for between two to five years.
Amnesty International have stated that if she is imprisoned she will be a prisoner of conscience (https://www.amnesty.org/en/library/asset/AMR20/007/2012/en/4a25c9a9-b445...).
The right to refuse to perform military service for reasons of conscience is part of freedom of thought, conscience and religion, as recognised in Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which the United States of America is a state party.
This includes those who have joined the armed forces voluntarily, since the freedom to change one's religion or belief is recognised in Article 18 (1) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. This was also specified in the Human Rights Committee General Comment 22, paragraph 5.
War Resisters' International calls for letters of protest to the United States' authorities. Protest emails to President Obama can be sent here: http://wri-irg.org/node/20416, please also contact the American Embassy in your own country. Contact details can be found here: www.usembassy.gov
War Resisters' International calls for the immediate release of Kimberly Rivera.

UNAC Statement on attacks on US Embassies in Libya
and other Middle Eastern, North African and SW Asian Countries

Adding Insult to Injury

The massive, angry demonstrations and attacks on U.S. embassies sweeping through the Muslim world comes in the context of a campaign against Muslims carried out by the U.S. government in an attempt to justify their wars against Muslim countries. This campaign includes preemptive prosecutions where FBI agents create phony plots and encourage behavior that can be prosecuted and attacks on civil liberties at home; the Peter King hearings; NYPD spying on Muslims; raids and detentions; and states that have passed anti-Muslim laws. It includes the physical attacks on Muslims, on mosques and on people who racist whites think are Muslims, like Sikhs, and opposition to Muslim building projects like Park 51 and much more.

This atmosphere encourages the kind of hateful anti-Muslim video that was produced. At some point, it had to be expected that Muslims around the world would react. The U.S. will spin this by focusing on the film and implying that all Muslims are crazy and do not support freedom of speech. However, this is a self-serving lie and a diversion from the real root causes. Humiliation is a necessary component of the cycle of abuse. It should be noted that similar attacks on Judaism and the Holocaust are prosecuted as hate crimes and that artists and musicians who have created work offensive to many Christians have been vilified and threatened.

We need to put the blame squarely where it belongs -- on the U.S., which has been at war with the Muslim world in order to dominate and control resources and power. We have seen the utter destruction of Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan; drone attacks on Muslim countries we are not at war with, including Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia; and the persistent economic starvation and political suffocation of the Muslim people in Egypt, Yemen, Somalia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and other countries by US backed dictators enforcing Western dominance in the region. So-called "targeted assassinations" kill many innocent non-combatants and are viewed simply as "collateral damage" rather than murders, demonstrating how little the U.S. government values non-Western lives.

The fact that these protests came as a surprise to the U.S. State Department is a reflection of the arrogance and stupidity of a government that claims it is bringing freedom and democracy to the region through drone missiles, sanctions, assassinations, and occupations and expects the people to be grateful.

The unfortunate deaths of the American Ambassador in Libya and members of his security team are the direct result of violent, hypocritical, internally conflicted US policies in the region, whether the unanticipated result of the rioting triggered by the film or blowback for longstanding U.S. atrocities rooted in the ongoing wars. It is long past time to reject those policies and begin a new era based on respect for the dignity and humanity of every individual and of all the various cultures and religions of the world.

We must stand in solidarity with all the victims of U.S.-sponsored violence and repression.

END THE WARS & OCCUPATIONS! BRING ALL THE TROOPS HOME NOW!

NO DRONE ATTACKS! NO SANCTIONS! HANDS OFF SYRIA & IRAN!

END RACIST REPRESSION, RAIDS, FRAME-UPS & ISLAMOPHOBIA AT HOME!

OCTOBER 6 ACTION AGAINST WARS ABROAD

AND POLICE STATE ATTACKS ON CIVIL LIBERTIES AT HOME

Join us in a march and rally to protest the dangerous escalation in threats of military action

against Syria and Iran and increased racist violence and repression at home.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1:30 PM

PARK ST.

Eleven years ago on October 7, the U.S. unleashed a war on Afghanistan, followed by the war on Iraq based on lies. While thousands of troops remain in these countries, U.S. drone missiles rain down on Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia. Now the government imposes sanctions and threatens to attack Syria and Iran. The U.S. sends troops and threatens to retaliate against anti-US protesters in the Middle East. These actions will escalate the nightmare of war in the Middle East, not end it.

To wage war abroad, they must wage war at home. The last decade has seen escalating repression and poverty at home. Islamophobia and scapegoating of Muslims leads to manufactured frame-ups and violence against the Muslim community. Civil liberties and the right to dissent are under siege with indefinite detention and extra-judicial assassinations now the law of the land.
Racism is a weapon of war. They use it against Muslims and immigrants. They've stepped up the war on Black and Latino youth, with racial profiling, stop and frisk, and harsh sentencing — resulting in police brutality, mass incarceration, military weapons in the hands of police, and a hugely profitable prison industry.
To pay for wars and to maximize the profits of the haves, they take more and more from the have-nots. We see cuts to the social safety nets, attacks on labor, huge unemployment, privatization of public services, neglect of infrastructure, and poisoning of the environment.
LET'S STAND TOGETHER IN UNITY AND SOLIDARITY. TOGETHER WE ARE POWERFUL!

HANDS OFF SYRIA AND IRAN! NO TO RACISM, RAIDS, AND REPRESSION! NO TO ISLAMOPHOBIA!

Olympia, WA, Oct 7

October 7th, is the 11th anniversary of the Afghanistan war: the unhappy day when America used its collective pain from 9/11 to inflict suffering and occupation upon the poor people of Afghanistan. Eleven years later, ninety percent of Afghan people have never even heard of 9/11 and yet they still suffer from the consequences. In the United States people have neglected to pay attention to the continued and expanded campaign of war and occupation.
This October 7th we would like to invite you to Localization Not Occupation, a gathering that will help us connect the dots between the wars in the Middle East and the increasing inequalities in America. Demanding politicians and war profiteers end the war is not enough. Localization builds community strength and demands we the people end the war directly. https://www.facebook.com/events/396399460423317/
