[SDCPJ] TONIGHT: ASD & NLG TOWN HALL: Stand Up Against State Surveillance & Intimidation!

Activist San Diego & The National Lawyers Guild KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: Stand Up Against State Surveillance & Intimidation! Monday, November 15th 7:00PM Joyce Beers Community Center in Hillcrest  (4065 Vermont St. San Diego, CA 92103 -1 block N. of Univ ave on Vermont, across from Trader Joe's) The FBI recently conducted coordinated raids on the homes and offices of anti-war & international solidarity  activists in 5 states.  Couple that with rampant, politically-fueled Islamophobia and an administration with  more ICE/INS profiling & deporting of undocumented immigrants than that of the previous administration     -  add the recent incidents of local police abuse of power and the significance for activists is clear:   we must pay attention to the growth of the repressive forces and become aware of their rights & legal resources. Join us and other activists in acommunity dialog and panel discussion on the growing presence of "national  security"  and state"intelligence" apparati, which are suppressing free speech and intimidating social justice  activists. Panalists will speak on each of these issues and how to respond safely & productively to a growing  culture of state oppression. Panelists include representatives from: * The National Lawyers Guild - if they knock, know your rights.  *The Council on American-Islamic Relations on profiling & intimidation *From Michigan:  An Antiwar & Colombia Solidarity Activist with FBI subpoena * Somalia Community Representative on the detention of 2  Somali San Diegans *May 1st Coalition-San Diego on ICE/INS immigration raids and abuses.  (A PDF and a PNG have been attached. they should print on Landscape setting when printing then cut in two.)

[SDCPJ] Palestine - Peace and Justice - SDCPJ Position Paper

 

The SDCPJ has been having serious discussions on our collective position on Palestine. This was prompted as a result of an unauthorized and offensive email posted to the SDCPJ listserv in response to a post from al Awda regarding the abuse of Palestinian children in Israeli prisons.

At our meeting of November 8th, 2010, we passed the following resolution:

 

Palestine – Peace and Justice

Position Paper of the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice

The San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice (SDCPJ), is a broad-based coalition, founded shortly after September 11, 2001 in opposition to the looming US invasion of Afghanistan, and later Iraq. From the outset, we have linked our opposition to these wars and occupations to our opposition to anti-Arab racism and Islamophobia within the US, and more recently, to support for the right of self-determination for the people of Palestine.
 
We believe that peace in the Middle East will be attained in parallel with the advancement of social justice for all people in the region. It is an elementary principle of social justice that all people have equal rights, independent of nationality or religion. This principle applies universally, including to the people of Israel/Palestine.
 
We have always recognized that these wars and occupations are not isolated aberrations of US foreign policy. Instead they form part of a global US political and military strategy which, in the Middle East, is based on the control of oil and other resources. With almost 1000 military bases throughout the world, and a military budget exceeding that of all other nations combined, the US seeks to be the world's dominant hyper-power for the profit of a small elite.
 
The causes of the wars and occupations in Afghanistan and Iraq are necessarily and intimately related. They are also intimately related to the causes of the occupation of the West Bank (including East Jerusalem), Gaza, and the Syrian Golan Heights. Each is responsible for immeasurable suffering and destruction. Opposition to one occupation should imply opposition to all.
 
Living as we do in the US, our main responsibility is to work for peace and justice within the US, opposing the role of the US government and its military in their denial of elementary rights to people throughout the world. Therefore, we call for and work to support:
 

1. An end to all United States military aid to Israel, which is in itself one of the biggest obstacle to a peaceful solution between the two peoples, along with an end to all US military aid to other nations in the region;

2. Opposition to the illegal occupation of Palestinian and other Arab territories, and the dismantling of the wall;

3. Recognition of the fundamental rights of the Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel to full equality;

4. Respect, protection and promotion of the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties, as stipulated in UN resolution 194; and

5. An end to the blockade of Gaza and recognition of the democratically-elected government in Gaza.

 

Based on these points of agreement, the SDCPJ commits to the following actions:

 

1. Linking our opposition to the US occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan to opposition to the US-supported Israeli occupation of Palestinian and other Arab territories;

2. Actively supporting the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Campaign (see http://bdsmovement.net/);

3. Using our internet presence to make clear our support for the right of self-determination for the people of Palestine, including an end to all US military support for Israel;

4. Sponsoring public meetings on the subject of Palestine; and

5. Working collaboratively with other groups including American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), the San Diego Coalition for Justice in Palestine (SDCJP), Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), Al-Awda, the Middle Eastern Cultural Information Center (MECIC), Jewish Voice for Peace, and other organizations that defend the rights of the Palestinian people and seek a peaceful resolution for all peoples of the region.

All honest supporters of social justice must stand in opposition to antisemitism, an irrational hatred of Jews as a people. However, criticism of Israel and Zionism, opposition to the expulsion of the Palestinians from their historic homeland, and rejection of the occupation of Palestine are not antisemitic. An honest accounting of Israel's role in the world would be a major step forward in overcoming antisemitism. Progress towards peace and justice can only be based on honesty and solidarity, overcoming national and religious divisions.

Amira Hass is a distinguished reporter and columnist for Israel's most highly regarded daily newspaper, Haaretz. For two decades, she has reported on daily Palestinian life in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the territories captured by Israel in the 1967 war. She has received numerous international awards for her reporting. These include the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom prize, the International Press Instituteʻs Freedom Hero award, the Bruno Kreisky Human Rights award, the Anna Lindh Memorial Fund award, the Hrant Dink Memorial award, the Archivo Disarmoʼs Golden Dove of Peace prize, and the Lifetime Achievement award from the International Womenʼs Media Foundation. Her lively and conscientious reporting has provoked great interest and controversy. The Israeli military, the Palestinian Authority, and Hamas have all periodically criticized her reporting and monitored her activities.

OCCUPATION 101 is a thought-provoking and powerful documentary film on the current and historical root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Unlike any other film ever produced on the conflict -- 'Occupation 101' presents a comprehensive analysis of the facts and hidden truths surrounding the never ending controversy and dispels many of its long-perceived myths and misconceptions.The film also details life under Israeli military rule, the role of the United States in the conflict, and the major obstacles that stand in the way of a lasting and viable peace. The roots of the conflict are explained through first-hand on-the-ground experiences from leading Middle East scholars, peace activists, journalists, religious leaders and humanitarian workers whose voices have too often been suppressed in American media outlets.The film covers a wide range of topics -- which include -- the first wave of Jewish immigration from Europe in the 1880's, the 1920 tensions, the 1948 war, the 1967 war, the first Intifada of 1987, the Oslo Peace Process, Settlement expansion, the role of the United States Government, the second Intifada of 2000, the separation barrier and the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, as well as many heart wrenching testimonials from victims of this tragedy. Occupation 101 features a leading list of some of the most credible Middle East scholars, historians, peace activists, journalists, and humanitarian workers.

ABDALLAH OMEISH is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and director. Slated to be one of the most influential and controversial documentary filmmakers of his generation, Omeish's debut documentary film Occupation 101 illustrated the young filmmaker's power to bulldoze down centuries of injustice and marginalized portrayals to establish a new arena for oppressed voices to be heard. Occupation 101, has to date won a total of nine awards both domestically and internationally.  

ALISON WEIR is the executive director of If Americans Knew, a nonprofit organization she founded following an independent investigation as a freelance journalist at the height of the second intifada in 2001 to flash points in the West Bank and Gaza rarely visited by American journalists. Her articles have been included in a number of anthologies; she is a contributor to the Washington Report for Middle East Affairs, CounterPunch, The Link, and other publications. Weir has lectured at Harvard Law School, Yale, Stanford, Berkeley, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, the Naval Postgraduate Institute, Georgetown, and numerous other campuses and other venues.

1.      Education and information:  We want to organize "know your rights"events in City Heights and other places that ICE and law enforcement have been harassing immigrants.

2.      Community Defense:  The formation of a local defense committees (Comites de Defensa del Barrio) in City Heights, then eventurally elsewhere in San Diego County.  Or perhaps we should building up the existing City Heights Human Rights Committee.

3.      In Unity There is Strength: The May 1st Coalition is considering becoming part of the organization Puente AZ (The group that led the resistance in Arizona).  We admire their organizing model of forming 'Barrio Defense Committees and People's Assemblies.

 

WHO: Who should attend the meeting?  Anyone! Students, day laborers, mothers, supporters of human rights, church groups, non-profits orgs, soccer teams, and anyone who cares about justice.

 

This meeting is called by members of the May 1st Coalition - an organization that has defended immigrant rights and organized many events and demonstrations with the community.
