Thanks to all who took part in the demo yesterday at the Federal Building in down town San Diego and who called for additional demonstrations. Bring your Palestinian Flag to send a message that All the Palestinian People are under attack and not only Hamas

Please join us this Saturday 1/17 @2:00 PM at Balboa Park

The Massacre is Continuing and So Should Our Response

For more than 19 days the racist zionist state of Israel has been committing massacres and war crimes against the Palestinian People in the Gaza Strip. The Death toll so far exceeds 1003 killed and more than 4650 injured, many very seriously. With the dead still buried under the rubble of schools, mosques, hospitals, markets, police stations, apartments and other civilian buildings, the death toll is expected to be much higher.

The US administration and Media are siding with the zionist invaders of Palestine. People in this country are fed up with this! Worldwide popular demands to charge the zionist Political and Military leaders with War Crimes are growing.

Please join the Demonstration

Saturday 1/17/09, 2:00 PM  @ the Fountain in Balboa Park

LET GAZA LIVE!

STOP THE GROUND INVASION OF GAZA!
STOP THE BOMBARDMENT OF GAZA!
STOP THE COWARDLY MASSACRES!

Matters of Controversy Presents

STOP KIDS FROM KILLING KIDS

 Special guest:

Ples Felix of the Tariq Khamisa Foundation (TKF)

Thursday, Jan 15, 2009 7pm

Come hear a powerful presentation by Ples Felix about youth violence, and how TKF is "breaking the cycle of youth violence by empowering kids, saving lives, and teaching peace."

TKF was founded by Azim Khamisa to "stop kids from killing kids " after the 1995 shooting death of his 20-year-old son Tariq by a 14-year-old gang member, Tony Hicks. Seeing victims on both sides of the gun, Azim reached out in forgiveness to the grandfather and guardian of Tony Hicks, Ples Felix. Over the last 13 years, TKF has been providing its powerful and proven school-based violence prevention education programs to inspire and empower students to say "no" to gangs, guns and violence.

Through TKF's school-based nonviolence programs and curriculum, TKF works with elementary, middle, and high school students. They teach about the realities of gangs, violence, revenge, and the importance of becoming "peacemakers".

LABOR/COMMUNITY
FIGHTBACK CONFERENCE!
The Bail Out the People Movement invites you to come together on Jan. 24th, 2009 in Los Angeles to talk, share and plan to fight back. While our tax dollars could have been used to stop foreclosures and evictions and provide healthcare and jobs during this greatest economic crisis since the 1930's, the government instead handed over trillions of dollars of our money to the richest banks, financiers and military industrial complex that caused this crisis. If ever there was a time for us to recommit ourselves to Dr. King's struggle for economic and social justice, there can hardly be any doubt that now, 80 years after his birth, is that time.

Whether you are an antiwar activist; a union organizer; someone who first became excited about politics because of Obama's campaign; or someone who is losing a job, a home, the ability to go to school, healthcare, a pension and are ready to unite and fight back, let's come together and determine what we can do during the first 100 days of the new administration and beyond to help give birth to a desperately needed mass struggle to fight for all that people need to survive and thrive.

What's it about?
•    Uniting and fighting against the war against working and poor people both here and abroad and for economic and social justice.
•    Bringing together all workers and people affected by this crisis in a militant movement to win our rights, linking up community groups, churches, labor unions, anti-war and social justice activists and more.
•    Uniting communities with union efforts to organize and protect working and poor people.

What do we want?
Panels & Workshops On:

  • JOBS OR INCOME - the Right to a Job. Extend Unemployment Insurance; No Plant Closings and Runaway Shops; ban slave labor in the prisons; Labor/Community control of banks, auto industry.
  • HOUSING FOR ALL - Housing is a human right - Moratorium on foreclosures and evictions.
  • EDUCATION FOR ALL – Quality education is a human right. With the budget cuts, many schools in the most oppressed communities are in danger of being shut down. Stop prison construction – fund schools not prisons.
  • DEFEND IMMIGRANT WORKERS. Attacks on immigrant labor are attacks against the entire working class and union movement. Stop the raids, deportations & family separations - Full legalization now.
  • STOP THE REPRESSION OF COMMUNITIES hardest hit by the crisis, including racist police brutality, and the railroading of youth into the prison system. How do we deal with the lack of public services, community gathering places, and even the lack of any real food stores in many neighborhoods? How do we ensure that any stimulus package also goes to the communities hardest hit by the economic crisis, especially in communities of color?
  • UNITE ORGANIZED LABOR AND ALL WORKERS to use their strategic position in the economy to fight for what we need: Awakened to the growing danger to their jobs, wages, benefits and pensions, workers will be looking for a new way out. Class solidarity and struggle offer that way.
  • BUILD SOLIDARITY WITH WORKERS IN GAZA, IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN, SOMALIA AND EVERYWHERE: People in the Middle East, the Caribbean, Latin America, Asia and Africa are fighting against the same banks, corporations and military industrial complex that rob and wage war against us here in this country on a daily basis. Unite our struggles to become stronger. Stop the War Machine, Fund People's Needs Instead.
  • FIGHT RACISM, SEXISM, HOMOPHOBIA AND OTHER ATTEMPTS TO DIVIDE OUR CLASS: The spontaneous protests of mainly Black and Latino people against the murder in Oakland by transit cops and the nationwide demonstrations against Prop 8 by the LGBT communities prove that people are ready to battle for social justice and equality. How can we further build united actions against oppression that will unify working and poor people?

[SDCPJ] Teach-In About the Economic Meltdown

All,

Activist San Diego has decided to dedicate the January 12th general meeting to a teach-in on the economic crisis, which I will be bottom-lining. Dr. Shahrokh Shahrokhi at Grossmont College has agreed to doing a 30-40 minute presentation addressing the following:

-What Caused the Current Meltdown? (including: the roots of the housing bubble, speculation, and underlying wage and wealth inequalities that contributed to economic instability)

-How is the Current Bailout Attempting to Stabilize and Revive the Economy?

- What Is Wrong With This Bailout?

-Most importantly: What Would An Alternative Solution that Favors Workers and Families Instead of Wall Street Profiteers Look Like?
Following the presentation will be time for questions/discussion. SD-SUN is co-hosting as this month's Socialist Forum.

Below is a description of the event..

Thanks,
Matthew Junker <firethecannons@gmail.com>

Understanding the Economic Meltdown:

The Shortcomings of Neoliberalism and Washington's Betrayal of Working People
Join Activist San Diego for a teach-in on the deepening economic crisis and Washington's failed response, termed ""the largest single act of class warfare in the modern history of this country" by Dennis Kucinich. Dr. Shahrokh Shahrokhi, Professor of Economics at Grossmont College, will spearhead a discussion on the causes of the current meltdown and Washington's betrayal of working people in a usual alliance with Wall Street profiteers. What would a response favoring working people and families look like? Join us in crafting a just and fair solution to the exposed failures of neoliberalism.

Reports coming from the Gaza Strip today Saturday January 3, 2009 indicate that the Israeli army has invaded the northern Gaza Strip entering the besieged Strip though the Beit Hanoun crossing shortly after nightfall. The invading army estimated at 10,000 troops are using American-supplied military equipment and bulldozers backed by helicopter gunships. This invasion represents a serious escalation to the ongoing attacks and carnage that Israel has been committing on the civilian population in the Gaza Strip over the past eight days. Israel's aerial bombardment over the past week alone has resulted in the killing of more than 450 Palestinian men, women and children and 2,000 have been wounded. The Gaza Strip is one of the most densely populated areas in the world with more than 6000 civilians living per sq km. It is home to 1.5 million Palestinians. In some areas such as the Jabalya refugee camp, one of the eight refugee camps in the Strip, 100,000 people live in an area no more than 1.4 sq km.  The ground invasion will lead to a significant increase in civilian causalities.
