[SDCPJ] February 4th Protest Against Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Bill

Join us February 4th from 5pm to 6pm at 6th and University for a
protest action to spread the word about the Anti-Homosexuality Bill
that has been introduced in Uganda.We will meet around 4:50 pm to
bullhorn and wave signs and let the people know about this horrible
legislation. This event is also running in conjunction with Equality
Across America's protest of the "Family's" ( a U.S.-led right wing
group with more than 10,000 cells worldwide) National Prayer
Breakfast.

Anti-gay extremists in Uganda are crafting that
country's dangerous "Anti-Homosexuality Bill" promising ruthless
punishments such as the death penalty or life in prison for LGBTQ and
HIV-positive people. The Ugandan government has long misspent and
wasted millions of dollars of U.S. funding intended for HIV/AIDS
prevention and wellness services. The new bill's chief authors are
Family members James Nsaba Buturo, Uganda's Minister of Ethics and
Integrity, and Member of Parliament David Bahati, both of whom have
proceeded with the encouragement of Ugandan President and Family
member Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

[SDCPJ] Can't Afford War No More! ACT NOW!

Since President Obama announced Dec. 1 that he will escalate the Afghanistan war by sending 30,000 additional troops, the disastrous failure of the Administration's war policy is becoming more apparent.    This week, U.S., UK, European, UN, and Afghan leaders will hold an international conference on Afghanistan.  The purpose of the meeting is to turn the tide of European and international public opinion which is running strongly against a futile, unwinnable war, and to extract pledges of additional troops. The British antiwar movement will be out in force to blockade it, and we must also keep up the pressure in the U.S. Tell your Congressional representative to vote against war funding. Call 202-224-3121. Join or organize a Brown Bag Lunch Vigil at your Congressional office Feb. 17 and every month. Afghanistan cannot be subdued by force. The Taliban showed last week that it can freely strike in the heart of Kabul, only yards from the Presidential palace.   It has shadow governors in all but one of Afghanistan's provinces.  And the killing of 5 CIA officers, including the agency's leading experts on Al Qaeda, by a double agent at a CIA base in Khost province Dec. 30, illustrates that the U.S. is facing sophisticated and disciplined adversaries. The war is causing rising civilian casualties and Afghan resentment of foreign forces.  2009 was the worst year since 2001 for Afghan children. Just in the past month, NATO forces killed 10 civilians including 8 schoolboys in Kunar province, 4 civilians in Nangarhar province (arousing a 5,000-person protest), 10 protesters in Helmand province, and 4 people in Ghazni province whom the Americans said were Taliban, but who the local people said were civilians. The UN reported that 2,412 civilians were killed in Afghanistan in 2009, a 14% increase over 2008.    Pressure is increasing on the U.S. for a diplomatic settlement. An International Herald Tribune op-ed last week joined a growing number of experts calling for restoring Afghanistan's neutrality, including  the departure of U.S. forces and bases.   And opposition to Obama's war is stirring in Congress, too.   Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) plans to introduce a privileged resolution repealing Congressional authorization for the war.  Rep.  Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) will offer a bill to require an exit strategy.   And Rep. Barbara Lee's (D-CA) HR.3699 withholds funds to pay for any increased troop levels. On February 1, the White House will present its FY2001 budget, which is expected to include a record-shattering $709 billion for "defense" with $159 billion for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Congress will also vote this spring on President Obama's request for another $33 billion for the Afghanistan escalation on top of the $709 billion.  At a time when millions of Americans are jobless and cities and towns across the country are slashing budgets for basic services, we urgently need to challenge the Administration's budgetary priorities.       Starve the war, not the nation!  Across the country students, teachers, women, the disabled, hospital and healthcare workers, the homeless, domestic workers, the unemployed, seniors and many others are protesting deep budget cuts to essential programs. It's time to join our efforts for a just economy with our call for peace and to tell Congress we can't afford war anymore. Find out who in your community is organizing in support of economic justice. Invite them to join peace activists in a monthly Brown Bag Lunch Vigil (BBLV) at your local congressional office. [SDCPJ] Remember Dr. King by taking action

Wars bleed the United States of lives, dollars, and morality.  Dr. King would oppose the continued military
occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. 

While trillions are spent on military occupations, we starve our schools of the ability to prepare our children for the future!
We are squandering our children’s future for the sake of military-corporate profits. 

While trillions are spent on military occupations, health care remains unavailable to tens of millions of Americans.  We use our children as cannon fodder, while making health for them unavailable. 

While trillions are spent on military occupations, we do not spend to heal our environment.  Our air, water and land decay in pollution and global warming.  We are dooming millions of people across the world to famine and destruction.

This is not the world we, or Dr. King, would want.  Take action.

EVEN MORE TODAY THAN IN 1967

A time comes when silence is betrayal. Even when pressed by the demands of inner truth, men do not easily assume the task of opposing their government's policy, especially in time of war. Nor does the human spirit move without great difficulty against all the apathy of conformist thought within one's own bosom and in the surrounding world. Moreover, when the issues at hand seem as perplexing as they often do in the case of dreadful conflict, we are always on the verge of being mesmerized by uncertainty. But we must move on. 

Some of us who have already begun to break the silence of the night have found that the calling to speak is often a vocation of agony. But we must speak. We must speak with all the humility that is appropriate to our limited vision. But we must speak. For we are deeply in need of a new way beyond the darkness that seems so close around us. 

We are called to speak for the weak, for the voiceless, for the victims of our nation, for those it calls ''enemy.'' For no document from human hands can make these humans any less our brothers. I think of them, too, because it is clear to me that there will be no meaningful solution until some attempt is made to know them and hear their broken cries.

I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights, are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered. 

A true revolution of values will lay hand on the world order and say of war, ''this way of settling differences is not just.'' A nation that continues year and year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death. 

America, the richest and most powerful nation in the world, can well lead the way in this revolution of values. There is nothing except a tragic death wish to prevent us from reordering our priorities over the pursuit of war.  This call for a worldwide fellowship that lifts neighborly concern beyond one's tribe, race, class, and nation is in reality a call for an all-embracing and unconditional love for all mankind. We can no longer afford to worship the god of hate, or bow before the altar of retaliation.  The oceans of history are made turbulent by the ever-rising tides of hate.  History is cluttered with the wreckage of nations and individuals that pursued this self-defeating path of hate. 

We still have a choice today: nonviolent coexistence, or violent co-annihilation. We must move past indecision to action. If we do not act, we shall surely be dragged down the long, dark, and shameful corridors of time reserved for those who posses power without compassion, might without morality, and strength without sight. 

Now let us begin. Now let us rededicate ourselves in the long and bitter but beautiful struggle for a new world. If we will but make the right choice, we will be able to speed up the day, all over America and all over the world, when justice will roll down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream. 

May our country, on the brink of war, take to heart the final refrain of America, the Beautiful: 

America! America! / God mend thine ev'ry flaw / Confirm thy soul in self-control / Thy liberty in law

Activist San Diego has 2 FCC applications in for new non-commercial, full power FM radio stations in East County and North County. 
We have received tentative approval for the 1st of the 2 stations from the FCC for the Descanso station pending approval from the Mexican FCC.  Potential listenership is 500,000 people.  For the second application out of Ramona (Potential listenership is 300,000 people), ASD is the only remaining applicant so we are confident that the construction license will come to use.

ASD would like a short letter of support from your organization to submit with grants for Radio equipment. - can you help us?

You might state that :

• That a new North County or East County public, educational radio station will help women, minorities, underrepresented groups,
• That the constituencies out in that part of the county want and would use this station.
• That public radio is essential for these communities to get news and public affairs down to the local level
• That organizations like your would not only listen, but would look to produce programing on the station.
• That your constituency would likely financially support this public radio station through membership and donations to build the station.
