Dear GVP Friends,

Urgent call to action

Email California State Senate Public Safety Committee TODAY

Senator Joel Anderson introduced a bill, SB 1092, to be heard in the California state Senate Public Safety Committee tomorrow, Tuesday April 10.  It would remove the current state prohibition on silencers for guns longer than 16 inches.  Silencers muffle and diffuse the sound of gunfire, and can make it harder for police, shot detection technologies, and the public in general to most effectively detect the location of where shots are coming from.

Email the Committee NOW

April Alerts from the PRC - Your Peace Tax Return

 April
at the PRC

Tax Day 2018 Action
Tuesday, April 17
Noon- 2pm

A PRC Special Event!

WHAT:     A bake sale for the "Air Force"?
WHERE:  outside the Federal Building
                880 Front Street, San Diego

It is April - a month when taxes, war and Earth Day collide.  Join us as the PRC holds a bake sale* outside the IRS to highlight our national skewed priorities.
Contact
info@prcsd.org for more details and to RSVP.
*Proceeds will not be going to the Air Force!

The National Priorities Project analyzes the US Budget, the impact of the Trump Tax Deal on the rich and the poor and the in-between, and the drain of an excessive military budget on our communities.  The pie chart above only includes military allocations as outlined in the budget.  It doesn't show actual expenditures, hidden allocations, and budget items for other federal programs that are also spent on war and destabilization of other countries.  You can find out how the US government spent your taxes here.

April is tax time. Have you filed your peace tax return?

PRC endorses Women Occupy San Diego's call for a strong, independent, community
Commission on Police Practices

Women Occupy San Diego (WOSD) has submitted a strong charter amendment to the city clerk that will replace the ineffective Community Review Board on Police Practices with a strong Commission on Police Practices.  Based on the Ethics Commission model, this amendment would if approved by voters allow for independent counsel, independent investigators to handle investigations of complaints, the power to subpoena, and a requirement to enact the people's will within 90 days.
The City Council's Rules Committee is considering the draft amendment at its next meeting.  We need a strong Charter Amendment.  Your support is urgently needed!  Please consider attending this meeting or contacting your elected council person to state your support for a Commission on Police Practices.

City Council Rules Committee
Wednesday, April 11 @ 1PM
202 C Street
City Council Committee Room, 12th Floor

You can read the proposed amendment here.   You can find out more about the work to create a Commission on Police Practices here.

The Poor People's Campaign kicks off in San Diego!!

The San Diego Poor People's Campaign had its debut at the Peace Campus on the anniversary of the assasination of Dr. King, April 4.  The PRC has joined this movement to transform the economic, political and moral structures of our country.  The revival of the civil rights PPC had its start in the Moral Mondays led by Reverend Barber in North Carolina.  The Campaign has 12 Fundamental Principles and is now established in 42 states.
Over fifty community activists and organizational representatives gathered at the Friends Center to learn about the Campaign in California and the upcoming 40 Days of Action at the state capitol.
Everyone joining the Campaign must register online here.
And anyone who will be participating in actions must attend a training in Nonviolent Moral Fusion Direct Action.

You can follow San Diego Poor People's Campaign here.

UPDATE
The work to reform bail continues in the CA legislature, thanks to the hard work of the ACLU and its bail ambassadors.  SB10- CA Bail Money Reform Act - is now in the state assembly appropriations committee.
Another potent mass incarceration factor is the District Attorney.  Watch this video to learn the huge impact a DA has on mass incarceration before the June 5th elections - whoever wins the election for San Diego DA will have tremendous repercussions on the lives of our young people in oppressed communities.

The Church of the Brethren and the PRC are happy to announce
Peace Camp 2018!

Campers and mentors had a great time last year.  Keep an eye on our FB page for event details.
