All Okinawa Calls for US Military Base Expansion To Stop On Their Island OKINAWAN DELEGATION TO TOUR SAN DIEGO MILITARY BASES with the PRC and SDVFP THURSDAY, August 17, 3-9pm The Peace Resource Center of San Diego and the San Diego Chapter of Veterans For Peace are honored to host a visiting peace delegation of dignitaries from Okinawa, Japan, in a tour of pivotal military sites around San Diego. The delegates are part of "All Okinawa", a coalition of community and local officials that are challenging the ongoing US military base expansion on the island of Okinawa.  The broad background of the delegates is to promote dialogue among a diverse group on problems of poverty, discrimination, and inequity and the impact of militarism on social conditions. The joint tour of peace activists includes pivotal military interests in our area.  It will start at the weekly San Diego Chapter of the Veterans For Peace "No MAS" demonstration opposite the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar base and end at the Women's Museum of California at Liberty Station, an ex-military base converted into community spaces. The self-guided tour begins at 3:30pm on the I-15 Carroll Canyon Overpass.   Look for the banners and the peace flags. The "All Okinawa" Coalition works to stop US base construction on the island of Okinawa west of Japan.  US militarism is destroying the ecosystem and quality of life of Okinawa. Satoru Oshiro, a delegate and Secretary General of the Okinawa Peace Center, explains the significance of the tour focus on San Diego military sites. "The presence of US Marines in very significant in Okinawa.  The US is building a huge base for the Marine Corps in Henoko that is hurting all of Okinawa."  Because of this, he adds, "Okinawa is the focal point of the anti-base movement in Japan".  The delegation is working urgently to educate people in the US about the problems foreign-based US military bases bring to local communities.  Both the Peace Resource Center and Veterans For Peace have worked closely with the Okinawa Peace Center and Okinawans resisting US base expansions over the past 10 years.  Last year, Veterans For Peace members traveled to Okinawa to participate in the rallies and road blocks. A message from the San Diego Chapter, Veterans For Peace We at VFP are especially honored to have the Okinawa delegation stand with us at our weekly No Miramar Air Show demonstration.   Okinawa is being destroyed by the US military, in a push to expand our presence in South East Asia.  The people of Okinawa feel American militarism and it's negative effects every day, in the loss of culture, land and a peaceful existence. Why has San Diego been plagued, for decades by incidents of police brutality? What must we do to build and sustain racial justice organizing against police abuse, police shootings, mass incarceration, disproportionate/racialized sentencing, marginalization of communities of color and institutionalized discrimination? Police in SD and Charlottesville VA did not prevent Trump supporters from attacking peaceful protestors.

KNSJ announces the reactivation of its series of debates.  The forthcoming monthly debate series will center around current topics in the news.  The format of the debates will consist of 2 panels of experts representing opposite views of an issue.  The participants on each panel will dialog, challenge and interact with panelists of the opposing view.  The debate also includes audience participation.  Anyone in the audience may step up to a microphone and address any of the panel members; this could be in the form of a question, comment or challenge to any of the panelists. 

The debate will be broadcast live over KNSJ 89.1 FM.

Sue Struthers has a bachelor degree in English Literature and a Masters degree in Library and Information Science from UCLA.

She is a Riverside Food Cooperative, Board Member and Treasurer since early 2013. She creates a recipe collection for Coop crop box subscribers and Teaches cooking with less waste for Heal Zone education component, including quick pickling, proper storage for longer produce life, and using more parts of vegetables.

She is a Riverside Food Systems Alliance, Member of the Executive Board and Treasurer since inception in 2015.

Her projects include: Grow Riverside planning committee, grant writing committees to promote local food access, planning Community Gatherings on Cottage Foods, Slow Money and gleaning.

She is a Gleaners for Good, organizer and fruit picker, since January 2017. She promotes ideas, scheduling gleaning crews for unneeded fruit, delivery to local food banks. She maintains a database of pickers, growers, food banks.

We need to flood the White House with calls saying: "Don't provoke a war with North Korea. Negotiate, don't escalate." Call 202-456-1111 between 9am-4pm EST. If you are in the DC area, you can also join us anytime during our 24-hour emergency White House vigil from 5:00 pm today, August 6, till 6:00 pm tomorrow, August 7. You can also sign our petition telling President Trump to send Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to North Korea for peace talks.  There is an urgent need to break the cycle of threats. U.S. military and economic pressure on North Korea, including a new round of stringent sanctions, provocative war games, and deployment of the THAAD missile system in South Korea, will not achieve peace. Instead, Trump's threats of military intervention put the Korean Peninsula in danger of nuclear war. Sixty percent of Americans, regardless of political affiliation, support direct negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang. Both President Moon of South Korea and Secretary of State Tillerson have called for negotiations. Tillerson recently said: "We would like to sit down and have a dialogue with them." This is very different from the bluster of President Trump. Diplomacy has worked to defuse the nuclear conflict in Iran. It can work in North Korea as well. Tell Donald Trump that negotiations are the only solution and he should dispatch Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to begin talks immediately. The world cannot risk a nuclear confrontation.
