The current government shutdown has shown us again that our elected officials are choosing to play politics rather than doing the work they were hired to do-- govern the nation and care for the needs of its people. We cannot trust them to make sound decisions about our national security. We must stay on top of developments in Syria and the Middle East.  Today marks the 12th year of the US war on Afghanistan. Continued successful pressure on our government to choose diplomacy over military aggression in Syria paves the way for diplomacy in Afghanistan. It's clear. Message from Lynne 9/27 September 28th, 2013 From Deep in the Belly of the Beast…that is, Texas. Now another month has passed and I am getting increasingly irritable that these jokers are so cavalier with my life and what time I have left. ( I also am getting weaker.) My application for compassionate release is moving but glacially (are there any glaciers left ? Only in the bureaucracy…)  We learned that the request has left the General Counsel's office of the Bureau of Prisons in Washington and is now being considered by an "Independent Committee" (whatever that means).  From there it will ostensibly go to the Director, Mr. Samuels, for the final recommendation and request for a motion to the Judge. As you can appreciate there is still plenty of room for slips between cup and lip.  I truly understand that I, with the strong and consistent support of all 30,000+ of you, do constitute a "threat" in their small universe.  That is to say that, the will of the People cannot be ignored forever.  With that in mind, I want to urge everyone to come on out on OCTOBER 8,  TUESDAY, MY 74th BIRTHDAY FOR A LOCAL SHOW OF OUR COLLECTIVE WILL IN OPPOSITION TO THE '"DEATH PENALTY " ORGANIZE ORGANIZE ORGANIZE ORGANIZE ORGANIZE ORGANIZE YOU AND YOUR COMRADES, FRIENDS, ACQUAINTANCES CAN GATHER AT YOUR LOCAL FEDERAL (US) COURTHOUSE OR POST OFFICE TO REMIND THEM THAT WE WILL NOT LET ME DIE IN A JAIL CELL !!! [SDCPJ] NRC Nuclear Waste Confidence Meeting in Carlsbad 10/9/13 postponed

We have received word that this meeting is "postponed" ...

We do not know when or if the meeting will be rescheduled.

Here is the NRC's email:

"Due to the lack of an appropriation and the government shutdown, the Waste Confidence Directorate regrets to inform you that we will not be able to hold the two public meetings that were scheduled for next week (San Luis Obispo, California on 10/7; Carlsbad, California, on 10/9). At this time the other meetings now scheduled for future dates are subject to being postponed if the shutdown continues.

When full operations are restored, the Waste Confidence Directorate will send status e-mails, post details on the waste confidence website regarding future meetings and work to determine the best path forward for continuing public participation in the waste confidence rulemaking. This will include consideration of when we can reschedule these meetings, consistent with our commitment to optimize public participation in the process.

[SDCPJ] Support needed Tuesday 10/2 at Encinitas City Council; Overturn Citizens United decision

The Women Occupy San Diego and Money Out of Politics/committee will be presenting to the Encinitas City Council on Wed., Oct. 2nd at 6 pm.  And local Encinitas support is needed!!

The topic is encouraging the Encinitas City Council to endorse a resolution to Overturn the Supreme Ct 2010 decision Citizens United v. the FEC which opened the floodgates of election spending.  The resolution asks for a constitutional amendment in order to overturn this decision.  

A link to the CC agenda is below, which has our action, a copy of the SD City endorsed resolution, and a background letter written by a MOP and Common Cause member, Ric Bainter.

We really need the support!  If anyone wants to say anything that would be wonderful...Ric's letter has lots of good info.  And a big deal is how the Super Pacs (Independent Expenditures, unnamed, non-disclosed) go around local campaign laws, as they do not directly donate to a political candidate.  They are often used in smear campaigns.  We really need to get this decision overturned if we want our individual votes to count and take back our democracy.  If you are hesitant to speak, that is OK, Pam Page will ask if anyone in the audience is in support and then you can stand up.

 

Best Outcome of the 10/2 meeting...We hope that Mayor Barth will ask for time to study the issue and possibly wordsmith a resolution to suit the philosophy to Encinitas. This would mean another CC meeting and give us time to lobby the councilmembers.
