[SDCPJ] LAST PUSH TO STOP THE SYRIA ATTACK

The Obama administration is pulling out all propaganda stops to wrest a congressional vote of approval to bomb Syria.  THE HUGE MAJORITY OF CITIZENS ARE OPPOSED TO THIS ACTION, and it is POSSIBLE to derail the mad rush to another war.

A last huge push must be done, to FLOOD Congress and Washington with the message: NO WAR/NO MILITARY ACTION on Syria!  Make sure your whole network, everyone in your address book, all your relatives north, south, east and west, get YOUR message to TAKE THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS – this weekend is crucial!

CALL IN TO CONGRESS -

Until the vote in Washington, the immediate focus needs to be on Congress.  We've all been involved in protest actions and we need to continue the pressure and intensify the mobilizations.  Our unified demand should be: Hands Off Syria – No War!

UNAC calls for putting pressure on Congress from now until the vote.  This includes organizing meetings with members of Congress, call-ins, sit-ins, letters, media outreach, petitions, etc.  Call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard: 1-202-224-3121.  Ask for your representative. Leave a message: VOTE NO TO WAR ON SYRIA!

E-MAIL IN TO CONGRESS –

Your actions thus far have helped compel President Obama to seek Congressional authorization before attacking Syria. Together, we've delayed any possible attack, giving us an opening to prevent it.

We have the majority of the people with us. We can compel Congress to block this war.

What you can do to help right now is to forward this email to at least four people and suggest that they, too,
click here to urge their members of Congress to oppose any attack on Syria.

The terrible and widespread killing in Syria will become even more terrible and more widespread if the U.S. military (or a coalition of allies) launches an attack.[1]

Under the Constitution, Congress is responsible for declaring war -- yet routinely it leaves the decision to the President.

In less than a minute, you can send an urgent email to your senators and representative (with a "cc" to President Obama) urging them to oppose a U.S. military attack on Syria. Click here.

The choice is not between doing nothing and bombing the Syrian people. Bob Dreyfuss, contributing editor at The Nation, urges "an all-out effort to achieve a ceasefire in the Syrian civil war. It's late in the game but it can be done. The first step would be for Washington to put intense pressure on Saudi Arabia, the Arab states of the Persian Gulf, and Turkey, to halt the flow of weapons to the Syrian rebels, while simultaneously getting Russia and Iran to do the same. A concerted, worldwide diplomatic effort along those lines could work, but there's zero evidence that President Obama has even thought of that."[2]

Click here to give the idea to the President and to Congress.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairead Maguire said this week: "Contrary to some foreign governments' current policies of arming the rebels and pushing for military intervention, the people of Syria are calling out for peace and reconciliation and a political solution to the crisis, which continues to be inflamed by outside forces with thousands of foreign fighters funded and supported by outside countries for their own political ends."[3]

Click here to tell those who would bomb people in our names that we strongly oppose such actions.

Very important: To help amplify voices for peace at this crucial time, please forward this message to like-minded friends.

[SDCPJ] Newly revised brochure for youths considering military enlistment

Project YANO has recently released a new (2013) version of its brochure, "The Military's Not Just a Job . . . It's Eight Years of Your Life." Written specifically for young people who are considering joining the military, it provides an informative alternative to the often misleading messages of military marketing.

The new edition includes revised sections on the Post-9/11 GI Bill, discrimination and sexual assault in the military, and war zone deployments. A new section on enlisting for citizenship was added, as well as current statistics on veterans' unemployment. Sources for factual statements are provided.

A version in Spanish will be available in October.

The brochure can be downloaded at http://www.projectyano.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=22&Itemid=40.

Bulk quantities can be ordered from the War Resisters League, http://www.warresisters.org/flyers.

The brochure is also included in a new Back-to-School Organizing Kit available at www.nnomy.org

The Peace Resource Center of San Diego is pleased to present "5 Broken Cameras," the first Palestinian film to ever be nominated for best Documentary Feature. Produced by y A.M.P.A.S®, the critically-acclaimed 5 BROKEN CAMERAS is a deeply personal, first-hand account of life and non-violent resistance in Bil'in, a West Bank village surrounded by illegal Israeli settlements.

Shot by Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat, who bought his first camera in 2005 to record the birth of his youngest son, Gibreel, the film was co-directed by Burnat and Guy Davidi. Structured in chapters around the destruction of each one of Burnat's cameras, the filmmakers' collaboration follows one family's evolution over five years of village upheaval.

As the years pass in front of the camera, we witness Gibreel grow from a newborn baby into a young boy who observes the world unfolding around him with the astute powers of perception that only children possess. Burnat watches from behind the lens as olive trees are bulldozed, protests intensify and lives are lost in this cinematic diary and unparalleled record of life in the West Bank. 5 BROKEN CAMERAS is a A Kino Lorber Release.

[SDCPJ] CALL FOR UNITED NATIONAL ACTIONS TO OPPOSE US WAR ON SYRIA

UNAC

  (please forward widely)

CALL FOR UNITED NATIONAL ACTIONS TO OPPOSE US WAR ON SYRIA

The Obama Administration seems determined to start a senseless and bloody war on Syria.  This is in spite of the will of the American people, most Syrians, world public opinion, many U.S. military and intelligence officials, and even the Pope.  UN Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon warned that any "punitive" action against Syria would be illegal and that a strike could unleash "more turmoil and bloodshed".

We cannot count on Congress to pull us out of this quagmire of expanding wars for profit.  However, any delay in launching the cruise missiles is important in organizing a strong opposition to this and future wars.

The war makers must be stopped and only a united and massive effort of all of us, reaching out to broad sectors of the American public can do this.  Remember, we have the majority on our side.

Until the vote in Washington, the immediate focus needs to be on Congress.  We've all been involved in protest actions and we need to continue the pressure and intensify the mobilizations.  Our unified demand should be: Hands Off Syria
– No War!

In addition, we call for mass, united protest actions everywhere on Saturday, September 7.
These include demonstrations in NYC at Times Sq., Washington, DC, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, LA, Atlanta and many other places, as well as a demonstration in LA on Monday, September 9 when Obama addresses the AFL-CIO convention.  We endorse the call by the Syrian American Forum for a mobilization in Washington on Monday, September 9, led by Syrian Americans opposed to military intervention.  We strongly encourage participation in all protest actions in Washington, DC, the seat of power, starting on Saturday and all next week.
An American strike threatens to explode what is already a regional proxy war into a worldwide catastrophe.  The stakes are high and we cannot afford to let any differences among us weaken and divide our forces.  If you are planning an action, please click here and fill out this form and we will list all actions on our website (www.UNACpeace.org).
