Events at the IPJ View this email in your browser Just Announced: Panel on Crisis in Syria Peace & Justice Theatre Monday, September 9, 2013 6 - 7:30 p.m. The Kroc School of Peace Studies invites you to a campus-wide conversation on the growing crisis in Syria. The purpose of the event will be to provide balanced information on and expert analysis of policy options for the United States and the larger international community.     Panelists will include Professor Ibrahim Al-Marashi of California State University, San Marcos; Rear Admiral Stephen Loeffler, USN (ret.); Professor Necla Tschirgi of the Kroc School; and Dean Edward Luck, who will moderate the event.     The program, which will include a panel discussion and question-and-answer period, will be followed by a reception in the Rotunda. This event is free and open to the public, and does not require registration. Women PeaceMakers Progam Correction: The first daytime event with Women PeaceMaker Sabiha Husić on September 12 has been moved one hour later to 1:30 p.m., due to a scheduling conflict. [SDCPJ] Newly revised brochure for youths considering military enlistment

 

 Project YANO has recently released a new (2013) version of its brochure, "The Military's Not Just a Job . . . It's Eight Years of Your Life." Written specifically for young people who are considering joining the military, it provides an informative alternative to the often misleading messages of military marketing.

 

The new edition includes revised sections on the Post-9/11 GI Bill, discrimination and sexual assault in the military, and war zone deployments. A new section on enlisting for citizenship was added, as well as current statistics on veterans' unemployment. Sources for factual statements are provided.

A version in Spanish will be available in October.

The Peace Resource Center of San Diego is pleased to present "5 Broken Cameras," the first Palestinian film to ever be nominated for best Documentary Feature. Produced by y A.M.P.A.S®, the critically-acclaimed 5 BROKEN CAMERAS is a deeply personal, first-hand account of life and non-violent resistance in Bil'in, a West Bank village surrounded by illegal Israeli settlements.

 

Shot by Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat, who bought his first camera in 2005 to record the birth of his youngest son, Gibreel, the film was co-directed by Burnat and Guy Davidi. Structured in chapters around the destruction of each one of Burnat's cameras, the filmmakers' collaboration follows one family's evolution over five years of village upheaval.

 

As the years pass in front of the camera, we witness Gibreel grow from a newborn baby into a young boy who observes the world unfolding around him with the astute powers of perception that only children possess. Burnat watches from behind the lens as olive trees are bulldozed, protests intensify and lives are lost in this cinematic diary and unparalleled record of life in the West Bank. 5 BROKEN CAMERAS is a A Kino Lorber Release.

[SDCPJ] CALL FOR UNITED NATIONAL ACTIONS TO OPPOSE US WAR ON SYRIA

 

(please forward widely)   CALL FOR UNITED NATIONAL ACTIONS TO OPPOSE US WAR ON SYRIA   The Obama Administration seems determined to start a senseless and bloody war on Syria.  This is in spite of the will of the American people, most Syrians, world public opinion, many U.S. military and intelligence officials, and even the Pope.  UN Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon warned that any "punitive" action against Syria would be illegal and that a strike could unleash "more turmoil and bloodshed".   We cannot count on Congress to pull us out of this quagmire of expanding wars for profit.  However, any delay in launching the cruise missiles is important in organizing a strong opposition to this and future wars.   The war makers must be stopped and only a united and massive effort of all of us, reaching out to broad sectors of the American public can do this.  Remember, we have the majority on our side.   Until the vote in Washington, the immediate focus needs to be on Congress.  We've all been involved in protest actions and we need to continue the pressure and intensify the mobilizations.  Our unified demand should be: Hands Off Syria – No War!   UNAC calls for putting pressure on Congress from now until the vote.  This includes organizing meetings with members of Congress, call-ins, sit-ins, letters, media outreach, petitions, etc.  Call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard: 1-202-224-3121.  Ask for your representative. Back-to-school Kit for Counter-recruitment and School Demilitarization Organizing

A new up-to-date kit of materials has been assembled for activists working to demilitarize our educational system and counter military recruiters in high schools.

Assembled by the National Network Opposing the Militarization of Youth (NNOMY), the kit contains a catalog of key brochures, flyers and videos that can be used to educate young people about the realities of military enlistment and war and offer them career and educational alternatives. It also contains useful information for school personnel and organizers. Items in the catalog have recently updated content and are accompanied by links to Web sites where they can be viewed, downloaded and/or ordered in bulk.

(please forward widely)   NO U.S. WAR ON SYRIA!  TAKE ACTION NOW AND ORGANIZE EMERGENCY RESPONSE IF THERE IS AN ATTACK and organize actions before an attack USS Dwight Eisenhower off the coast of Syria Secretary of State Kerry's demagogic speech on August 26 on the situation in Syria makes it clear that the U.S. is serious about military action against the people of Syria.  Polls show that the overwhelming majority of Americans are against any further intervention.  However, as with the Iraq War, the government shows contempt and disregard for the will of the people. UNAC calls for all antiwar and social justice organizations to prepare for a response if there is any military action by the U.S. in Syria.  We call upon all organizations to mobilize to take action opposing U.S. intervention before any military action.  We also call upon all organizations to work together and make plans for an emergency response on the day after any military action against Syria.  If your organization is making such plans, please click here and fill out the form so we can let others know. The issue of chemical weapons is the cover the U.S. and its allies use to justify their illegal and immoral acts of war, just as the specter of WMD's were used as the rationale for attacking Iraq.  Their real mission, as in Iraq, Libya, and elsewhere, is to force regime change in order to control energy resources and get compliant regimes in the region.  The claim that a bloody military attack on a country that poses no threat to the U.S. is needed to offer humanitarian assistance is the height of hypocrisy.  The result of the "humanitarian" invasion and ten-year occupation of Iraq is over a million Iraqi deaths and a country in ruin. Military intervention will not bring peace to a people already engulfed in terrible violence and destruction.  Such intervention can only lead to more death and devastation. We must do all we can to stay the hand of the U.S. government as it moves towards military intervention in Syria.  Please start organizing now for actions to oppose U.S. intervention in Syria. Say NO to another US War! [SDCPJ] On Syria

Attack Syria?  NO

 

The San Diego Coalition for Peace & Justice (www.sdcpj.org) opposes United States military intervention or involvement in Syria.  Here's why: 

 

The U.S. problem with Syria is not Syria, it is the U.S.

 

U.S. military interventions around the world, notably in the Americas and the Middle East, have always been rationalized by humanitarian arguments. But inevitably and almost universally, these interventions have actually been motivated by dreams of global power and war profiteering. 

 

The reality of U.S. military interventions, beyond abhorrent profits by corporate war contractors and munitions vendors, has been failure of humanitarian objectives; and worse outcomes for the citizens of the invaded nations including the cost of countless human lives.  The "positive" outcome of war profiteering has been at the cost of the U.S. taxpayer. 

 

The United States, thanks to the military adventurism of the last decade-plus, has had its reputation reinforced as hated invader and occupier.  This includes the effect of the global drone wars.  Any U.S. military intervention in Syria will not only not resolve that nation's internal divisions – it will, as our military invasions have done, make things worse.  Worse for the Syrians – and worse for the U.S.  And again, who will profit? 

 

The San Diego Coalition for Peace & Justice opposes any U.S. military direct or indirect entrance into the Syrian conflict.  Our national experience shows that war breeds war, and death breeds death. U.S. military adventurism breeds both, and a deepened earned hatred of the U.S.  No good can come of this.

Tuesday August 6, 2013 marks the 68th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima by the United States.

Join the Peace Resource Center as we fold paper peace cranes and give them to people visiting Balboa Park. Look for the blue banner "Hiroshima / Nagasaki - Never Again" near the fountain between the Natural History Museum and the Rueben H. Fleet Space Center. Both these museums are free on that Tuesday and there will be many people to have conversations with about nonviolent alternatives to resolve international conflict.

We will be there from 10am until 2pm. Come for as little or as long as you like. Experience folding paper cranes is not required. Bring along some gently used paper to recycle into cranes.

The atomic bomb droppings on Hiroshima on August 6th and on Nagasaki on August 9th 1945 were the last live use of nuclear weapons in history. August 5th 2013 (August 6th in Japan time) will mark the 68th anniversary of the bombings and hence 68 years of freedom from nuclear weapon usage. SD-WISH invites you to join us on the beautiful Shelter Island for an afternoon of commemoration as we gong the Friendship Bell to celebrate this freedom and send our WISH for eternal peace. Community members and leaders share their messages of dedication to peace, understanding and tolerance.

Part II: Floating of Paper Lanterns

Adopting a traditional Japanese ceremony tōrō nagashi (tōrō means "lantern" and nagashi means "cruise, flow"), we celebrate peace and humanity by floating paper lanterns with written messages to the world as a hope or WISH for global peace and well-being. We invite guests to write messages on paper lanterns and enjoy a relaxing San Diego evening at the waterside Coronado City Council Chambers patio along with light food, refreshments, origami, exhibits, presentations, and live music – a wonderful experience to gather and celebrate with fellow community members and leaders. You can make and float your very own paper lantern (materials will be supplied for free) and you're welcome to take it home with you at the end of the evening. Yukata are welcome!
