You are receiving this email because you are on our e-list or have asked to receive more information about upcoming events.
Well, here's one heck of an event as well as an amazing volunteer opportunity!!
The Peace Resource Center (PRC) will again have a booth at this year's Earth Fair in Balboa Park -- on Sun April 21st.
And we NEED YOUR HELP tabling this year.
- You will be working with one or two other volunteers.
- You can sign up for 1 or more shifts of your choosing (each shift is 2 hours).
Remember that if you sign up for a shift you are responsible for that shift.
- Shift Needs are as follows:
8:30-10:30 (includes setting up)
10-12
11:30-1:30
1-3 (this slot is full, thanks!)
2:30-4:30
4-6pm (includes cleaning up)

WHY volunteer?
As you may know, it is incredibly important when people volunteer for an organization, especially small ones like the PRC. Everything from making copies to tabling helps organizations thrive by continuing the chain of passing information onto others who otherwise would not have heard of us. By doing this we bring in more people who care about what we do and who want to help us achieve our goals of serving as a resource for the diverse San Diego community, just like you.
That is how I started volunteering here at the Peace Resource Center. I understand and appreciate the hard work that goes into organizing and planning events and I wanted to be a part of that process so that when we table, or march, or rally I get to see the result of my hard work as more and more people become active, involved, and informed.
And that's what tabling does! When we table at events, like Earth Fair, we are reaching out to those like minded people who want to create a more peaceful society. When you table, YOU will be part of the chain of information so that even if someone walks away without becoming a member, they will walk away with the knowledge you gave them. And that is most important of all.
So, come down with us on Earth Day and we will stand side by side as we educate and involve the public on what we do here at the PRC!

Details: On the grass between the U.S.S. Midway War Museum and Harbor Blvd, south of Broadway. Performances by the Occupellas (Women Occupy SD acapella chorus) and Vibe, a socially-conscious youth hip hop/rap band, with speakers, and highlighting the names of 178 children/youth documented to have been killed by U.S. drone strikes. Please wear black.

3:45 p.m. Drone Warfare, Part One: The Drone Landscape
Drone warfare has increased dramatically since 2008 and there are over 60 bases across the globe engaging in a US drone missions. US drones are currently deployed in the skies of over 14 different countries, some for surveillance and others for attacking ground targets. The area of Pakistan, bordering Afghanistan, known as Waziristan is the locus of much of the drone operati ons. But are these weapons keeping us safe, or do they just incite further terrorist attacks? And is their use a violation of the Geneva Conventions?
4:30 p.m. Drone Warfare, Part Two: The Drone Economy
The forerunners of the drones that are currently targeting people on the ground were once themselves targets. They have since evolved into reconnaissance vehicles, and more recently as weapons platforms. Predator drones are manufactured in Poway, near San Diego, where over 4,000 people are employed at General Atomics at the taxpayers' expense. We examine the implications of this kind of warfare, and the loop of finance that rewards contractors and the politicians they support.
5:15 p.m. Drone Warfare, Part Three: The Drone Morality
Who bears responsibly for lethal action when weapons are fully automated? Can a machine have a code of ethics? While their accuracy might, in theory, minimize innocent deaths, drones also enable illegal political assassinations, and by keeping US troops out of harm's way they also make war easier. A serious debate on these topics is long overdue.

CodePinkers performed a billionaire cocktail party skit/street theater at which Blue and his buddies chatted about why it is sooo good for their class to have drones making money for them and it only affects terrorists anyway…
A small "personal" drone flown over the heads of the demonstrators was promptly confiscated by police. The crowd asked for their toy drone back, but the policeman said, "It could hurt somebody," which played into the drone issue. The police were cool about it all.
A brief included the reading the names of children killed by drones, posters of children and a display of children's shoes.
The group is now off to the 10 a.m. demo at General Atomics headquarters!

From Dave Patterson, San Diego Vets for Peace: Today we had 75 people from San Diego San Fransisco, Fresno, LA, Albuquerque, Prescott Az, Washington DC and other places. Media Benjamin, CodePink, was there with several CodePink people, and we had lots of press. We started in a cul-de-sac about 1,000 yards from General Atomics, not far from the place we have been demonstrating for 7 months. We marched along the 1 mile road past GA facility after GA facility, and eventually to a very busy intersection where 1,000s of car pass every hour. We had in tow our Reaper Drone model and made our presence known. The honks and thumbs up were frequent, giving the indication that our message is getting across. We are at the edge of a Tsunami of public anger regarding the misuse of this technology, and our message to Congress is fix it quickly!

Edison expects to shut down and restart reactor repeatedly over next two years
'Disgraceful' scheme for risky nuclear experiment could begin June 1
WASHINGTON, April 3 – In an extraordinary admission, Southern California Edison said today that as part of the experimental plan to restart one of the crippled San Onofre nuclear reactors, the utility expects to have to shut it down and restart it four or five times in the next two years. Edison also confirmed that it will ask the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to approve an amendment to their operating license, which would mean a public hearing would be only held after the decision is made.
Friends of the Earth said the proposal is disgraceful -- another example of Edison putting profits before safety and treating legitimate public concerns, and those of independent nuclear engineers, about safety with disregard and contempt.
In a meeting at NRC headquarters, Edison announced that it wants the NRC to approve the request in time to restart the damaged unit 2 reactor by June 1 and wants the license to cover two years of operation. If those requests are granted, the NRC could approve the license before any public hearings.
NRC officials indicated their decision will rely on Edison's technical evidence as submitted. What it shows is that if the reactor is restarted, the already damaged steam tubes will vibrate, suffer further wear and potentially burst in 6 to 13 months -- well before the two year time frame Edison has proposed.
"Yet again Edison is putting profits before safety," said Kendra Ulrich, nuclear campaigner for Friends of the Earth. "To propose an experiment in which the damaged reactor is repeatedly turned on and off shows a disgraceful contempt for public safety. With more than 8 million people living near this reactor, the NRC must act to protect the public, reject this reckless request, and commit to a full public hearing process before they make any decision."
Friends of the Earth commissioned an in-depth technical analysis from a world-renowned nuclear engineer, John Large of Large & Associates in London. The analysis, released Tuesday and to be filed with the NRC, shows that Edison has yet to provide convincing evidence that it knows the full reasons or root cause of the severe wear damage in its steam generators. The problems remain unresolved and un-repaired, and the damage will continue if the NRC allows the reactor to be restarted. In fact, Edison's own experts hired by the utility to examine the problems disagree with one another as to the cause of the damage and the time left before a tube burst accident.
Letters from a coalition of grassroots organizations in Southern California, as well as national organizations, have been sent to Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), calling on them to use their influential positions on committees overseeing the NRC to demand a comprehensive license amendment process that includes all safety issues and the opportunity for full public hearing.

"National Anti-Drone Days of Action" from April 4 through 7 in San Diego start a month of protests across the United States against the policy and practice of drone warfare and secret surveillance. Local and national organizations are coordinating a series of events to increase the attention to why drone killings and surveillance are bad practice and policy for the United States. San Diego is where these protests will start based on the region's role as the "national capital" of military drone production. Killer and surveillance drones pour out of San Diego at increasing rates, matched by the rise in deaths and dismemberment from US strikes across the globe. Most of this production is tied to two corporate contracting giants — Northrop Grumman and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, which is headquartered in San Diego. "National Anti-Drone Days of Action" from April 4 through 7 in San Diego start a month of protests across the United States against the policy and practice of drone warfare and secret surveillance. Local and national organizations are coordinating a series of events to increase the attention to why drone killings and surveillance are bad practice and policy for the United States. San Diego's "Anti-Drone Days" is not one, but a series of events (see complete listing at the end of the attached Press Release).
San Diego is where these protests will start based on the region's role as the "national capital" of military drone production. Killer and surveillance drones pour out of San Diego at increasing rates, matched by the rise in deaths and dismemberment from US strikes across the globe. Most of this production is tied to two corporate contracting giants — Northrop Grumman and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, which is headquartered in San Diego. "It's so exciting to see that people around the country are now questioning the use of drones to kill people around the world with no accountability. Focusing on General Atomics in San Diego is absolutely critical, as it is a company that literally makes a killing out of killing. [SDCPJ] Anti-Drone Days Light Brigade actions
| Overpass Light Brigade - San Diego and Fresno Light Brigade will have three evenings devoted to the elimination of endless war by joystick from the comfort of an office chair and our government's violation of the Fourth Amendment: surveillance of its own citizenry by remote control. Join in one or all of these actions! Please RSVP for the Thursday and/or Friday evening actions, this will help in our planning: chrisw51@sbcglobal.net Thursday (4/4) and Friday (4/5) evenings we will be over I-5 on Clairemont Drive, at 7 PM, with ample parking nearby on the west side of the freeway a short five minute walk to the overpass. Saturday (4/6) we will be on the east bank of I-15 on the property of The Church of the Brethren, during the forum, from 7:15 to 8:15 PM. We need a few volunteers to take shifts in holding "DRONES FLY - KIDS DIE" This is but one of many activities planned for Anti-Drone Days in San Diego |

"I just got a call from someone who said he was an employee at General Atomics in San Diego. He said they just sent out info telling folks about the upcoming protests and suggesting they come to work at different times and through different entrances. He said he has worked there for many years, that he didn't have any problems with the surveillance drones, but when they started arming them, he didn't like it. He thinks they are evil because they kill civilians and help recruit new militants. He wanted to thank us for the protest. He said the only problem he has is that we don't do them often enough--that if we really want to have an impact (including on employees), we have to be more persistent! He wouldn't give me his name, but he said he had heard of my book and was going to buy it. I asked him to stay in touch."
Please come out and join us at all or any of the events! With San Diego proposed as an even larger "drone hub," this is the time for us to be seen and heard!

Al-Awda, The Palestine Right to Return Coalition is pleased to announce that we will be hosting a six US city concert tour of internationally-acclaimed Palestinian Oud musicians Le Trio Joubran. Accompanied by virtuoso percussionist Yousef Hbeisch, Le Trio Joubran will be performing May 10 to May 19, 2013 in Florida's Orlando Tampa and Miami Fort Lauderdale areas, Cleveland Ohio, and in San Diego, Anaheim, and San Francisco in California.
Le Trio Joubran are unique. They are the world's only professional oud trio. The three young Palestinian brothers – Samir, Wissam and Adnan, are the sons of a master oud craftsman from the Palestinian city of Nazareth. Samir, the eldest of the three at 38, is a stunning virtuoso with a tremendous international reputation. He was inspired to form the oud trio after listening to contemporary flamenco and jazz fusion guitarists. He is joined by Wissam, aged 29, who was apprenticed to his father and became the first stringed instrument maker from the Arab World to graduate from the Antonio Stradivari Institute in Italy. Wissam hand-crafted the three brother instruments played by the trio in the Joubran family's tradition. Adnan, the youngest at 26, is considered a prodigy by his brothers and his full musical talent has started to emerge.
The oud, or Arab lute, is the voice of Palestinian tradition and classical Arab music. Its ancient origins date back as far as Mesopotamia and Pharonic Egypt; it is a distant cousin of Russia's balalaika and Japan's biwa, and the forefather of the European lute, brought to Western Europe by the Troubadours via Moorish Spain. Considered the king of instruments in the Arab world, the Oud remains popular today throughout North Africa and the Near and Middle East.
The Joubran brothers proudly bring an awareness of their Palestinian culture and identity to the stage. However, once they start to play, the Oud's transcendent quality acts to bring people together, so that any divisions of culture, race and language cease to matter. The trio's music can remind the listener that beyond the horrifying headlines coming out of occupied Palestine, is a beautiful country with a rich cultural heritage – and hope.
Between musical ecstasy and sumptuous silence, Le Trio Joubran carry their audience from elation to melancholy. Their overwhelming stage performances are both precise and overflowing with emotions that will take your breath away – Don't miss it!
