The upsurge of concern & outrage is being felt all over the country & had a huge effect on us all in SD.
There are several branches of Occupy - Women's Occupy, Labor Solidarity, Children's Park, City Heights, SD County, Freedom Plaza, Occupy Encinitas, etc -- ASD will work to have all those views represented. Have suggestions?

Following the short ASD Elections and the presentations there will be breakout sessions to brainstorm, followed by a wrap-up session to put views on the table. Of course this is just open discussion about Occupy - not an attempt to steer any of it in any particular direction.

On Saturday June 22, activists will gather in San Francisco and Los Angeles at the Japanese Consulates from 3-5 PM (50 Fremont St/Mission St. San Francisco) to support the moving protests in Japan that have called on the prime minister NOT to reopen the Ooi nuclear plant there.  These protests have been huge and not covered by Japanese media. In California simultaneous actions in LA and SF on the 22nd will support the Japanese activists as part of a world-wide effort. The theme is "Shut Down, Not Meltdown: Keep Japan Nuclear-Free/Keep All Nuclear Plants Shut Down in Japan.  You can also call the Japanese Embassy, (202) 238-6700.

*The underlying causes of conflict such as fear, anger, stereotyping, power and powerlessness, as well as "old history" and behavior.

During just one weekend in 2008, 37 people were shot in Chicago, seven of them fatally. This film captures a period in Chicago when it became a national symbol for city violence and was besieged by high-profile incidents, most notably the brutal beating of Derrion Albert, a Chicago High School student, whose death was caught on videotape.

The Interrupters is the moving story of three dedicated "violence interrupters"—Ameena Matthews, Cobe Williams and Eddie Bocanegra—who, with bravado, humility and even humor, work to protect their Chicago communities from the violence they themselves once employed. Their work and their insights are informed by their own journeys, which, as each of them points out, defy easy characterization.

Shot over the course of a year out of Kartemquin Films in Chicago, The Interrupters follows Ameena, Eddie and Cobe as they attempt to intervene in situations before those situations turn violent: two brothers threatening to shoot each other; an angry teenage girl just home from prison; a young man heading down a warpath of revenge. The film captures not only the interrupters' work, but reveals their own inspired journeys from crime to hope and, ultimately, redemption. As they venture into their communities, they confront the destructive cycle of poverty, incarceration and joblessness -- and reveal the importance of economic opportunity, community cohesion and family ties.

Ultimately, this is a story of the power we all possess to make a positive difference in our community.

[SDCPJ] Encinitas City Council decides to put San Onofre on their agenda!

Thank you to the 13 people who showed up at tonight's Encinitas City Council meeting and the 9 people who spoke during the public comment section;!also thank you to those of you who sent e-mails  After hearing our comments, Councilwoman Barth moved to put the issue on the official agenda at a future meeting and her move was seconded by Councilman Muir!  Apparently that's all it takes to get on the official agenda; no date was set, but we will be keeping tabs on this and will let you all know when to show up for agenda item at which we will be able to make a full presentation on the issues!  

Also this week the Laguna Hills City Council in Orange County agreed to put the item on the agenda in August.  We'd like it sooner, of course, but we are making headway!

We are particularly grateful to our friends and allies in San Clemente who started this process and have helped with expert testimony and wonderful handouts and data.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership is a new free trade agreement that is being negotiated between the US, Brunei, Vietnam, Singapore, Peru, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, and Malaysia.  This trade agreement could set globalization for years to come. The Trans-Pacific Partnership has been negotiated behind closed doors without transparency and the voice of the 99% represented. Members of Congress, stakeholders, journalists, and the 99% do not have access to the negotiating texts. Despite several coordinated calls from international allies, civil society, and the labor movement, negotiators have only responded that they will not release the text until four years until after the talks are concluded or a deal is reached, leaving only the voice of the 1% allowed to engage in an agreement that will affect our lives.

 

•             TPP would deny healthcare, a human right to the 99% by imposing strict monopolies on patents and raising the price of pharmaceuticals that would decrease access to medicines and roll back the modest reforms to allow the 99% greater access to life-saving medicines.

•             TPP would encroach on internet freedoms by causing for internet service providers to police user activity. TPP would stifle innovation due to the harsh sanctions that countries would be forced to adopt if they are a signatory to the agreement.

•             TPP would weaken labor provisions and deny the right to work and security to the 99% through offshoring of jobs, banning Buy America and buy local programs, and lack of strong labor provisions and enforcement with labor protections for the 99%.

•             TPP would allow for the hard fought reforms of the 99% to be undermined by corporations by elevating corporations' rights above those of the 99% by including provisions that allow for corporations to challenge domestic policies in private courts that skirt our domestic systems and regulations.

[SDCPJ] SAFE California Act will replace death penalty

Hello to all,

 

As you may already know, there will be an opportunity in November's general election to vote on an initiative to ban the death penalty in CA.

 

The SAFE California Act will replace California's death penalty with a sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole as the maximum punishment for murder.  See the safecalifornia.org website for more details on the initiative.

 

One near term event in support of this initiative will be held at 6:30 pm, on Tuesday, June 19, at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Valencia Park.   It is part of the Witness to Innocence Tour.  Please check the pdf attachment for event details.  If you have any questions related to the event, please contact norma@safecalifornia.org.

Your voice is needed!

The crippled San Onofre nuclear power plant  has  posed an unnecessary risk to our environment and our communities. It has also left Southern California Edison ratepayers footing a 670.8 million dollar bill for critically-flawed steam generator equipment.  Lax oversight on the part of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) allowed this to happen. On June 18^th, we have our first opportunity to hold the NRC accountable. Your voice is needed! Please attend this meeting.

On January 31^st, a steam generator tube ruptured in San Onofre reactor Unit 3, releasing radioactive steam into the environment. Further inspection revealed unprecedented, accelerated wear in the recently replaced steam generators of both reactor Units 2 and 3.  According to reports  by nuclear expert, Arnie Gundersen, these replacement steam generators contain significant design changes. These changes should have required a full license amendment process, with a public hearing. Instead, NRC Region IV accepted Southern California Edison's word and allowed these replacement steam generators to be licensed under a perfunctory, rubberstamp process.

The NRC responded to these significant steam generator problems by   deploying an Augmented Inspection Team (AIT). However, this team is under the oversight of Region IV, the same NRC office that rubberstamped the critically-flawed replacement steam generators initially.

On Monday, June 18^th, the NRC will hold a preliminary public hearing on the AIT findings. However, the NRC has released no prior documentation to enable the public to make fully-informed inquiries into this process. This meeting is a gesture in the direction of transparency. However, there has been no real commitment to public engagement and the dissemination of information.

We must hold them accountable. Please come to the hearing, bring friends, and make your voices heard! Our communities deserve safety and transparency!
