Susan Rosenberg

Susan Rosenberg

Susan Rosenberg was a political activist who was sentenced to 58 years in prison. She served 16 years until President Bill Clinton granted her clemency on his final day in office. Her new memoir, An American Radical: Political Prisoner in My Own Country, reveals how she was subjected to brutal treatment in various U.S. prisons, including techniques later used on a wider scale at Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, and now - for Pvt. Bradley Manning - at the Marine brig in Quantico.

Mike Needham at KPFK

Michael Needham

Michael Needham is the father of John Needham, who received an Army Commendation Medal for actions to save his comrades, and a Purple Heart for combat injuries suffered in Iraq. John later attempted to commit suicide as a result of severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Instead of receiving treatment, he was held in solitary confinement, deprived of food and threatened by his commanders. John died in February of 2010 from complications related to his medical care.

[SDCPJ] VFP Homeless Flier - Please Forward

It is hard to believe the number of people living on our streets with next to nothing.  Please consider a donation, and send this to everyone you know.  $35.00 will keep someone warm to face another day.

GIVE A HOMELESS PERSON IN DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO A WARM SLEEPING BAG, A PONCHO, AND A STUFF SACK TONIGHT FOR $35!!
There are now about 4,000 homeless folks in San Diego County, with many of them located downtown on the streets. Many of them are the "newly homeless" and have nothing other than the clothes that they are wearing. The nights can be very cold and wet.
The San Diego Veterans For Peace, a local 501-C-3 veterans educational organization, has created a "Compassion Campaign" to provide the homeless downtown with a set of a sleeping bag, poncho, and nylon stuff sack, which will help make their life immensely better while they are homeless.
Veterans from our chapter are downtown on the streets each week giving out sets of sleeping bags/ponchos/stuff sacks to those most in need and can purchase and distribute each set for only $35.
With your donations, we have to date provided 420 sets of gear to the neediest homeless and hope to continue this campaign indefinitely.
100% of the money donated buys gear, as we have no administrative or overhead expenses.

[SDCPJ] Ken Secor

Comrades,

I am not sure resting in peace would be Ken's thing but I both sorrow and celebrate my knowing him many years and I know that all who knew him will feel the loss.  It seems fitting that he went while on the go...

Solidarity Brother,

Fred

Brothers and Sisters:
It is with the greatest sorrow that I inform you of the passing of our amazing union brother, Ken Secor, last night.  As many of you know, Ken had been ill and hospitalized during his travels in Korea. In my 5 years at the Labor Council, I can say with confidence that I have never met a more dedicated, loyal, and hard-working volunteer than Brother Ken. Although the tears are flowing here at the Labor Council, we know that Ken had a long and fulfilling life and died a well-traveled, well-read, and very proud Machinist Union Man.  We will let you know once we know of a service to celebrate his life.

May he rest in peace.

In Solidarity,
Lorena

Here is the pledge:

Pledge to resist FBI, Grand Jury repression
Actions planned if anti-war and international solidarity activists are called to Grand Jury or indicted

23 anti war and international solidarity activists have been subpoenaed to appear in front of a Grand Jury in Chicago, headed by U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald. They have done nothing wrong. They have educated and organized against U.S. wars around the world. And they have stood in solidarity with the peoples of Palestine and Colombia.

All 23 of the targeted activists said that they will not cooperate with this witch hunt against the movements so many of us have worked to build. The U.S. attorney is working to put these activists in prison. Whether some of them indicted, or others are jailed for refusing to testify, the threat is very real.

We will carry forward the fight for our right to speak out, organize and to stand in solitary with those who want freedom. We will stand up to any escalation of the attacks on anti-war and international solidarity activists. We will join the national day of protest when anti-war and international solidarity activists are ordered to appear in front of the Chicago Grand Jury or indicted.

Anti-war and international solidarity activism is not a crime!

Location:

ASD Meeting
Event Summary :
Discussion on the upcoming medical cannabis ordinance and the future of Medical Cannabis in San Diego

On March 28th, the San Diego city council will be voting on an ordinance that, if passed as written, will close down every medical cannabis facility in the city and would make it virtually impossible for them to reopen. Patients suffering with AIDS, Cancer, MS, Cerebal Palsy, PTSD, and other ailments will be left without safe access to the medicine their doctor recommends. In response, the San Diego chapter of Americans for Safe Access partnered with Canvass for a Cause to launch the “Stop the Ban” campaign in order to educate the public about the ordinance and to mobilize grassroots opposition.

This event will feature speakers from San Diego Americans for Safe Access, members of the Medical Marijuana Task Force, and organizers from the Stop the Ban campaign. Discussion will involve the history of medical cannabis politics in San Diego, why it’s vital to preserve safe access to medical cannabis in San Diego, and information on the campaign currently underway to influence the city council on this issue.

Panel discussion:

  • Stephen Whitburn, Medical Marijuana Task Force
  • Eugene Davidovich, A.S.A.
  • Rev. Mary Moreno Richardson, St. Paul's Episcopal Church
  • Ben Cisneros, ASD Board and Stop the Ban Campaign (ASD Board President)
  • Rachel Scoma, ASD Board and Stop the Ban Campaign (ASD Board Secretary)

[SDCPJ] Please Help! State Big Box Bill

 Brothers and Sisters,

Most of you are aware that after the San Diego City Council overrode the Mayor's veto to pass the Ordinance to Protect Small and Neighborhood Businesses (Wal-Mart/Big Box), Wal-Mart began collecting signatures and forced the city council to repeal the measure. The next day, Senator Juan Vargas introduced a similar bill (SB 469) that would make economic impact studies a requirement for big box development statewide.

We are now working to pass SB 469 and we need your help. It is key that we build grassroots support for this bill and begin pushing our state legislators to support it.

The first thing we need is for everyone to sign the petition to support the bill: http://act.aflcio.org/c/240/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=1482

Secondly, if you are on facebook, please "Like" the page to support the bill:

The bill will be heard in the first committee, Senate Government and Finance, on April 6.

Juan Melendez spent nearly 18 years on Florida's death row for a crime

Juan's inspirational story of courage, resilience, faith and forgiveness.

[SDCPJ] March 19 - End the Wars! - San Diego 12-3:30pm -- Please Forward

-Please circulate widely-

END THE WARS!

Saturday, March 19, 2011

12:00 pm - 3:30 pm

6th Ave. & Grape St, Balboa Park, San Diego

19 reasons why we will be out on March 19:

  1. Because the US wars and occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan are wrong

  2. Because they are wars for oil and for empire, based on lies

  3. Because nine Afghan boys were murdered by a US helicopter gunship while collecting firewood last week

  4. Because we need jobs, housing, healthcare and education, not $1.2 trillion a year spent on war

  5. Because our youth are forced to join the military, the poverty draft, when they cannot find other work

  6. Because we stand in solidarity with the uprisings of the Arab people, and oppose US intervention

  7. Because we stand in solidarity with the public workers in Wisconsin, in Indiana, in Ohio, and in San Diego

  8. Because Palestine must be free

  9. Because another world is possible

  10. Because if we do not stand for peace and justice, who will?

  11. Because Bradley Manning is abused and in solitary confinement, allegedly for leaking the truth

  12. Because the politicians won't listen until we mobilize for direct action

  13. Because we condemn the attacks on Muslims, Arabs and immigrants in our country and elsewhere

  14. Because we want our troops out now

  15. Because 9/11 was always just an excuse

  16. Because Bush's wars are now Obama's wars

  17. Because the US supports corrupt dictators

  18. Because there are no good empires

  19. Because on March 19 we will join together with others who defend peace and social justice, to support and learn from one another, and to help spread the word

What are your reasons?

12:00pm – 2:00pm

Gather at 6th Ave & Grape St for music, speakers, outreach tables, networking opportunities, Bradley Manning support postcards to convey your own personal message of hope & support.  Voicemail blast your congresspeople a message of dissent and demand an end to these wars of oil and empire!
