Like you, the ACLU believes we are a nation where all people should have equal opportunity to participate, prosper and reach their full potential.
This is why we must stand together to ensure LGBTQIA+ people can live openly without discrimination, and enjoy equal rights, personal autonomy, and freedom of expression and association guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.
Tonight and tomorrow, we invite you to join us in solidarity with San Diegans whose rights are threatened by recently-discovered Trump administration efforts to redefine gender to exclude trans, intersex, and gender nonconforming people.
Please consider attending one or both of these critical events, organized and led by local LGBTQIA+ organizations:
We Won't Be Erased Teach-in
WHEN: Friday, October 26th, 5:00pm-6:30pm
WHERE: Hillcrest Pride Flag
This teach-in aims to educate San Diegans about the Trump administration's effort to erase identities of trans, intersex, and gender nonconforming people. Speakers with these identities will discuss what this issue means to them personally, what it may mean for us all, and how all San Diegans can support each other in the face of bigotry and injustice.
We Won't Be Erased March and Rally
WHEN: Saturday, October 27th, 9:00am-12:00pm
WHERE: Waterfront Park (1600 Pacific Highway, San Diego, CA 92101)
Last Sunday, the New York Times broke the story of a leaked U.S. Department of Health and Human Services memo proposing to strip transgender people of certain federal civil rights protections. This would be accomplished by the adoption of narrow definitions of gender and sex identities and the implementation of archaic, intrusive practices to determine someone's gender identity. The consequences are terrifying and unacceptable, affecting health care access, legal documents, travel and employment of more than 1.4 million people.
Locally, concerned organizations, activists, youth, and elected officials convened to respond to the HHS draft memo. What emerged was this two-day community rally, teach-in, and march. These events are intended to educate and mobilize allies and to amplify the voices of trans community members.
This weekend, the ACLU will stand united with San Diego's LGBTQIA+ community and allies under the banner that trans lives matter, trans rights are human rights, and that trans identities WILL NOT be erased!
We hope to see you there.
