Dear Friends of the Ocean Beach Green Center,

Some of you on this list know Jim Bell, the visionary, dedicated environmentalist who has been talking about sustainability for over 40 years. http://www.jimbell.com/

Jim had a stroke Dec 22nd. It was on his right side so his cognitive and speech skills are not affected. Jim is now at Kearny Mesa Convalescent for rehab. Visiting hours are from 8 am to 8 pm. The phone # is 858-278-8121. He is in room 15, bed 2. It is easy to get to, right off the 163 and Mesa College Dr. He could be there for a couple weeks so visitors are appreciated. Physical therapy can be hard so we need people to encourage him, so he can get back home. If you know Jim and want to help or want to find out more information you can call Colleen  619-225-1083

January 12th Friday 6:30 pm  Sierra Club's film night  "The United States of ALEC: A Follow Up "  8304 Clairmont Mesa Boulevard #101, 92111. Bill Moyers hosts this exposé of the American Legislative Exchange Council, a secretive organization whose members are state legislators, corporate representatives, and corporate lawyers and lobbying firms, but which claims to be a non-profit organization and a "non-partisan public-private partnership" whose mission is "educational". They have met in cities across the country (including San Diego) to craft bills which are then introduced into state legislatures: bills to block climate change and renewable energy laws, to make it harder to vote, to privatize education, to do away with collective bargaining and living wage laws. Their ultimate goal is to shrink the role of government so that the private for-profit sector runs the country, and nothing remains of the public sector. Is this what "democracy" looks like?  Free More info:  Jean Costa 619-463-0721 jcosta@sierraclubsandiego.org
