SDCPJ DECISION-MAKING PROCESS:
As a coalition, the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice is comprised of people from a wide variety of social, political, ideological, and cultural backgrounds. In order to come to decisions that encompass the diversity of opinions in our group, we work with a modified consensus model. At times, the process can feel tedious. It is up to each of us to minimize tediousness by avoiding repetition of points already voiced and recognizing that consensus does not necessarily mean that we discuss everything until everyone present agrees on every detail. The facilitator may wrap up a topic about which there are differences simply by asking if the group can accept a dominant position, even though some people still disagree. The goal of consensus is to come to decisions with which everyone is comfortable. This allows us to maintain as broad a base as possible and to not alienate any of our members.

[SDCPJ] Request: Housing for Activists

Dear Peace Community,

The U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation (http://endtheoccupation.org/) is holding their national conference this September 19-21 in San Diego.

While most attendees will be housed at the Town & Country Hotel where the conference will be held, there may well be a need to house out of town activists whose financial situation does not allow for the expense of a hotel room.

Can you help host an activist for this weekend?  Please contact me, Lynn Gonzalez, at dissential@gmail.com if you can help.

Thanks!
Lynn

The Brady Campaign works to pass and enforce sensible federal, state and local gun laws, regulations and public policies through grassroots activism, electing public officials who support common sense gun laws.  Through our Million Mom March and Brady Chapters, we work locally to educate the public about the dangers of guns and to honor the victims of gun violence.  We believe that all Americans, especially children, have the right to live free from the threat of gun violence.

San Diego Gun Buy-Back
Our chapter contributed to and participated in the San Diego gun buy back on August 30.  The event was organized by UAAMAC in collaboration with the Sheriff and SDPD. We distributed information about Brady and the ASK campaign.  The line of cars stretched out of the parking lot and down the street;  hundreds of guns were turned in.  This was a great use of our funds and an excellent venue to educate the public about the importance of sensible gun laws.

[SDCPJ] Fw: flyers

Attached are 2 flyers for events organized to protest the appearance of Supreme Court Justice Scalia at the State Bar Convention in San Diego.  He is speaking at a luncheon on Thursday, September 11, and we (National Lawyers Guild and Women Occupy San Diego) are planning a demonstration outside the Hyatt beginning at 11:30 a.m.

In addition. we are having a forum on The Supreme Court's War on Women, Minorities and Workers at California Western School of Law on Thursday, September 4, beginning at 7 pm.  Speakers will talk about the horrible SCOTUS decisions on women (Hobby Lobby, etc.), civil rights (voting rights, affirmative action), workers rights and, of course, Citizens United.

[SDCPJ] SAT, 8/30 12noon: SPEAK THEIR NAMES San Diego Ferguson Solidarity Demonstration

SPEAK THEIR NAMES
San Diego Ferguson Solidarity Demonstration

In light of the recent shooting of unarmed teenager Mike Brown and subsequent police hostility directed toward protesters in Ferguson, MO, people across the USA have been asked to gather in support of Ferguson residents.

The grave mishandling of several recent events ending in the untimely deaths of innocent people indicate a need for change. Mike Brown, 18, is one of many who have not yet seen justice in the wake of unchecked police abuses.

Join us as we remember #mikebrown and over 180 San Diegans who have had their lives Stolen by Law Enforcement.

In a community effort to keep the issue of lives lost at the hands of law enforcement and standing with the brave people of #Ferguson, a coalition of community organizations are holding this action.

We will rally.
We will march.

After the march we will return to the park where resources to organizations will be available so that you can continue to be involved! We will also have an open mic for community members interested in sharing their stories

We will meet at 12:00 pm at the City Heights Performance Annex at 3795 Fairmount Ave in San Diego.

cold water for folks who attend and chairs will be provided

[SDCPJ] NEWS RELEASE - CHE CAFE - FOR DISTRIBUTION

please distribute

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Aug. 26, 2014

CONTACT:
Bryan Pease, Esq. (619) 723-0369 bryanpease@gmail.com
Rene Vera (619) 865-8696 grveraxxx@gmail.com

LA JOLLA - Following attempts by the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) to evict the Che Cafe
Collective from the historical space it has operated continuously since 1980, the Collective has just filed a lawsuit
to challenge the basis for the eviction. The lawsuit alleges that the University colluded with key members of the
Graduate Student Association (GSA) to secretly push through a flawed resolution "decertifying" the Collective so
the University could bypass the space agreement negotiated in 2006.

"If the University wishes to decertify the Che as a student organization, it should do so in a fair and open hearing
and give proper notice of the hearing so members of the campus community can participate," states Bryan
Pease, attorney for the Che. "Instead, this hearing was held with basically no notice, and only one student could
give public comment."

The one student who was able to find out about the hearing in time to give public comment is also a petitioner in
the lawsuit, which alleges that the GSA abused its discretion by failing to support its decision with substantial
evidence, and failing to proceed in a manner authorized by law.

The Collective and its attorney will be in court on Sept. 3 at 1:30 p.m. bringing a motion to quash service of the
eviction action based on improper notice and improper service of the eviction papers. There will also likely be a
hearing the following week on a temporary restraining order to block any further eviction proceedings until a
legitimate GSA hearing and vote can take place regarding the Che's certification.

Meanwhile, support for the Che grows, with over 11,000 signing the online petition in support of the Che, and
dozens of emails, letters, and other comments pouring into the University. Organized labor has taken a stand,
including the statewide UC Council of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), who sent a critical letter to the
Chancellor and the Regents urging that they reconsider their decision to try to remove the Che Cafe from its
current space. Two UCSD Campus unions, the graduate student teaching assistants (UAW Local 2865) and the
Union of Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE-CWA 9119), have also sent letters to UC officials in support of the Che Cafe.

In the midst of the dispute, the Che continues to operate as it has for the past 34 years as a student-controlled,
democratically-run space on campus for students to have a safe and alcohol-free atmosphere for entertainment
and meetings. Although the University shut the gas off at the Cafe, without its consent, and blocked a grant that
the Cafe received to upgrade cooking and refrigeration equipment, the Collective continues to provide healthy
vegan food to its guests utilizing the limited resources it now has.

Several fundraisers and events in support of the Che are being planned, with more information to be released.

Supporters and former members of the Che insist that it has not only provided a safe and accessible venue, but
has provided many UCSD students the skills and experience they need to succeed after graduating, including
many who have gone on to become doctors, lawyers and professors.
