[SDCPJ] FW: Breaking: Iraq War Vote Friday

Date: Wed, 23 Jul 2014 17:57:42 -0400

Subject: Breaking: Iraq War Vote Friday

Breaking: Vote Friday

Contact your representative today and ask them to vote against an open-ended military presence in Iraq.

You can stop another Iraq war.

Dear Lt Col David Gapp
A vote on U.S. intervention in the civil war in Iraq is scheduled for Friday.
Already over 700 U.S. troops have been sent to Iraq. Media reports say that these special forces could provide on-the-ground intelligence needed to call in airstrikes.
As you know, this is how a wider war starts. Can you contact your representative today and prevent U.S. military intervention in Iraq from escalating?
The President has pledged not to have a large ground force in Iraq, but he's exploring other military options. He argued that Congressional approval is not necessary for such action.
The Pentagon has said it was considering airstrikes "to break the momentum" of ISIS.
The good news is that Reps. Barbara Lee (D-CA), Jim McGovern (D-MA), and Walter Jones (R-NC) have introduced pro-peace legislation on Iraq. Their H. Con. Res. 105 forces a debate and vote on escalating military intervention in Iraq.
Please contact your representative today and ask them to support H. Con. Res. 105.
What is happening in Iraq today is truly tragic. But the very nature of the conflict means that airstrikes can inflame sectarianism and hurt civilians, causing further tragedy. Recep Erdogan, Prime Minister of Turkey – a country right next to the fighting – cautioned, "ISIS elements are mixed with civilians, so such an operation might cause serious casualties."
Contact your member of Congress today and ask them to stop U.S. escalation in Iraq. The U.S. should use diplomaticy and humanitarian aid to help the people of the region.
Thank you for all you do for peace,
Jon Rainwater

Friends,
Just takes less than a minute to fill out the drop-down boxes to mail a letter of support to your two Senators, the President, and your Representative.  Please help Jewish Voice for Peace in this effort!  Click on the "Action Alert" below.
Also, if you care to see Democracy Now's coverage of their arrest, and the sad state of affairs our Police State reacts to peaceful civil disobedience, please watch:

Action Alert

The glimmer of hope I have in these dark days is you - our community of members, supporters, and allies standing up all over the world.

In the police van with Maia Ettinger, daughter and grand-daughter of Holocaust survivors.

The time to act is now.

Take Action!

Facebook Twitter icon

Dear Lt Col David,
Yesterday, I was part of a delegation of activists from Jewish Voice for Peace and Jews Say No! who took over the Friends of the IDF headquarters in New York.  Until we were arrested, we read the names and ages of the dead and sang songs of mourning, often with our voices breaking and tears rolling down our faces. We stood there for an hour, reading the names steadily, and still did not read them all.

As I was taken out in handcuffs to face a sea of about 30 police officers, I asked a staff member of the Friends of the IDF standing nearby, "Did you hear the names we read? Did you see that we read them for an hour and didn't reach the end? Is this what you support? Are these the Jewish values you grew up with?"

As Jews, so many of us have been brought up on stories of our families' lives hanging in the balance based on the courage of someone who had the choice to speak up or remain silent.

We are in that kind of moment now. And that is why I, and so many other people like me, are taking action. And why we need you to stand up with us.

Over 600 people in Gaza killed in the last three weeks. Thousands of homes destroyed, another 4,000 people wounded. US tax dollars have helped pay for that army, and Israel claims to act in the name of all the Jews the world over.

But you can do something about it. We all must do something about it.

Click here to send a message to President Obama and Congress demanding they withdraw support for Israel's unacceptable, intolerable actions.

The glimmer of hope I have in these very dark days comes from you – our members, supporters, and allies who are standing up, all over the world.

In Washington, D.C., Jewish Voice for Peace members, alongside members of CodePink, interrupted a Christians United for Israel conference while Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer was speaking. Despite being violently attacked, they continued their protest.

In Boston, over a thousand people, JVP'ers and a large coalition of allied organizations rallied in front of the state house and blocked traffic for several hours.

In Chicago, five activists from JVP and AFSC were arrested protesting at Hewlett Packard, and in the Bay Area JVP'ers conducted a die-in at HP to protest its profiting from Israel's war crimes. Seattle members did the same at Boeing.

I could go on and on:  protests in Ithaca; Portland, OR; Portland, ME; St. Louis, Jersey City. There are more places than I can count, and more to come.  Everywhere we—you—are getting our pro-peace, pro-justice, pro-equality message out. We are taking a stand.

All over the world, you've signed Open Letters, gone to rallies, contacted elected officials, written Letters to the Editor, shared educational materials, and dared difficult conversations with your family and friends.

But the attack continues. The siege continues. We're going to have to continue to step it up.

I hope you'll join us in action, as long as it takes. Click here for a listing of actions nationwide JVP is participating in.
It is our shared responsibility to end this bloodshed. And I know we can.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Vilkomerson
Executive Director

[SDCPJ] Fwd: KNSJ Table at Pine Valley Days Saturday 7/26--Volunteers Needed

Marie Ida Johnson <marieidajohnson@gmail.com>

KNSJ Community Radio

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED THIS SATURDAY AT A GREAT EVENT IN A BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAIN SETTING

KNSJ will have a table at Pine Valley Days this Saturday.  We need volunteers to help us take this opportunity to talk about our radio station and about community radio.  Please contact me if you are available on Saturday at any time.  Help is needed to bring and return our canopy, table and chairs as well as introducing KNSJ to everyone and canvassing people regarding issues affecting their communities and what they would like to hear on the radio.  We will be located at the Pine Valley County Park, 28810 Old Highway 80.   Our Space number is 41NP.  Pine Valley is almost in the shadow of KNSJ's tower.

Set-up starts at 6:00 am and tear down begins at 5:00 pm.  All booths must be set-up and ready to go by the end of the parade which is about 10:30 am.

Pine Valley is a little east of Descanso.  Pine Valley Days has been an annual event for the last 43 years.  Proceeds support education and scholarships to the students of the Mountain Empire school systems.

On Saturday morning at 9:00 AM there will be a 2 hour parade down old Highway 80 from Pine Valley Road to Pine Blvd. with Equestrian, Bands, Clowns, Old Cars, Fire Trucks and many others.  After the parade the fun starts in the Pine Valley County park located at 28810 Old Highway 80.

Attached are the flyers for the July 23 Community Forum that the NLG is co-sponsoring with the ACLU and Women Occupy San Diego.  The purpose of the event is to allow the community - including us - to address the group that is "auditing" the SDPD (they are called PERF) and tell them our concerns about the SDPD.  I strongly urge people to attend, listen and participate.

Public Forum:
The Humanitarian Crisis Facing Central American Children and What You Can Do to Help

Tuesday, July 15, 6-8:00 pm, the Institute of Peace and Justice Theater

The Trans-Border Institute will host a public forum on the nature of the humanitarian crisis facing unaccompanied Central American children arriving on our border, and what members of our community can do if they want to help to alleviate this crisis.

TBI Director Ev Meade will provide a general overview of the issue, emphasizing: how many children are coming and where from; what we know about the conditions they face in their home countries and in transit; and how the present crisis fits into broader global and historical patterns.

Distinguished USD alum Enrique Morones, Director of Border Angels, will discuss what we've learned about the perilous journey these children made to get here and how they've been received in our communities; the multi-faceted effort to provide social services, shelter, food, and clothing to these children here in Southern California; and how concerned community members can contribute to this effort.

Representatives of Casa Cornelia Law Center will explain the legal issues facing these children; their experiences in representing children at different stages of their immigration claims; and the broader challenges their young clients face in the United States.

A public discussion will follow. We welcome anyone interested in this issue to ask questions of our panelists and to share their experiences, in a spirit of enlightened civil discourse.

The event is free and open to the public.

We hope that you will join us.

[SDCPJ] Labor program meeting at KNSJ Thursday

Sisters, brothers and labor supporters,

KNSJ FM and a few of us had discussed some time ago the possibilities of having local labor programming on the station.  They have been very preoccupied with a lot of startup matters and local labor has been on the shelf.

Sorry for the short notice (they just did a fund raiser) but the this Thursday, the 17th, KNSJ community general meeting will focus on labor programming.  In order for this to be fruitful, we need a turnout of some union members and supporters.  We need a broader input than just a couple of us about how to make labor programming attractive to labor and the community.

Most AM & FM talk shows all over the country are right-wing and antiunion as you know.  Here is an opportunity to push back.  Last Delegates meeting, Hector Saldivar from the CLF spoke to us and asked us to get involved with organizing.  The AFT just met in L.A. with a major emphasis on reaching out to communities for support.  We have been under attack and cannot pass up opportunities to get our stories, histories and issues out by us.

I hope you will join me to see if we can launch something with KNSJ at 7:00pm.  The station is up and running and just needs us.
