What economic recovery? CPI analysis of new Census data shows persistent poverty and lower real wages in San Diego County Most households and employees in the San Diego region are doing worse or no better since the recession began five years ago, according to an analysis by the Center on Policy Initiatives of 2012 U.S. Census Bureau data released today. A growing number of people in the region – including many who are employed – remained mired in poverty and more children have slipped into poverty. Middle-class families have lost buying power as median household income continued to drop across the county. Our press release today quoted CPI Research Director Peter Brownell: "People have less money to spend, even those working full-time. The wealthiest saw their incomes increase in 2012, but when we hear talk of economic recovery, it hasn't reached most people in our region." Our 4-page report is available now at onlineCPI.org. Key Findings While the top-earning 20% of households took in half of all income in the region, real median income for all households fell by $1,231 from the previous year. More than a quarter (28.4%) of all individuals working full-time, year-round earned less than $30,000, roughly the amount needed for a single person to live self-sufficiently in San Diego County. More than 123,000 full-time or part-time employees fell below the federal poverty level ($11,945 a year for an individual). The poverty rate in the county was virtually unchanged at 15% (from 15.1% in 2011), much higher than the pre-recession level of 11.1%. The rate of children living in poverty jumped to 19.8%. Besides children, groups hit hardest by poverty – with rates of 20% or higher – included African Americans, Latinos, and the cities of El Cajon, San Marcos and Escondido. More than 1 million San Diego County residents, a third of the population, lived in economic hardship, at or below double the poverty rate. That measure is used because the federal poverty level, which varies by family size, is unrealistically low compared to costs of living. Clearly, the economy can't recover for most people until wages are high enough that our neighbors can support themselves and spend money in the local community. Poverty and low wages drag down the entire region, as these data show. The recent vote to increase California's minimum wage to $10 an hour is a welcome first step, but too little and too slowly implemented. The San Diego Veterans For Peace, along with friends and supporters of peace, will again be demonstrating and "bannering" on the 6th Avenue overpass of I-5 downtown against US involvement in the Syrian civil war.   This is our fourth "No War On Syria" demonstration on the 6th Avenue overpass and each one grows in numbers of participants and press interest. 

 

When:  Thursday, September 12th, 2013, from 4-6 PM

 

 

Where:   6th Avenue overpass of I-5, near the corner of Elm Street and 6th Avenue

 

 

Who:    Veteran and associate members of the San Diego Veterans For Peace, friends, and supporters of peace.  The general public is encouraged to join us and bring  SIGNS WITH LARGE LETTERS visible by commuters along the I-5.   

 

 

What:  Veterans, associates and supporters will again be demonstrating and "bannering" against unwise and unjustified US involvement in the current Syrian civil war. 

 

 

Why:  President Obama's plan to obtain Congressional approval of his military activities against Syria call us out to the streets to object. While we are heartened by the recent proposals by France and Russia to dismantle Syria's chemical weaponry, we remain very concerned about Obama's plans to strike with cruise missiles (now said to be "on hold") because our post 9-11 history shows that we usually strike first and think later.

[SDCPJ] URGENT need 4 support of San Onofre Cost and Safe Decommissioning Advocacy

Three months ago, civic and environmental activists won a huge victory in shutting down the San Onofre nuclear plant near San Clemente, California. It may seem that all is now quiet in San Onofre land, but that is not the case. Yes, we are safer since the plant has been retired – but we are not safe.

The Coalition to Decommission San Onofre (CDSO) has been startled by the enormous challenge of managing radioactive nuclear waste at the plant. The issues include: unusually potent forms of fuel, dense storage of spent fuel far beyond design limits, large uncertainties about where the waste will ultimately be stored and for how long, and last but not least, the economics of decommissioning. These issues were below the radar during the shutdown debate, but they now loom large.

The Coalition has secured the involvement of top-rated nuclear waste specialists to provide crucial details about the current situation at San Onofre and other U.S. nuclear power plants.

Arjun Makhijani is an expert on HOSS (Hardened On Site Storage) and long-term high-level waste management issues. Arnie Gundersen is a former nuclear industry engineer and executive with a long history working on spent fuel issues in the decommissioning process. Marvin Resnikoff has worked on nuclear waste issues with government, industry, and activists for decades. 

Our immediate goal in securing this expertise is to assure that best practices will be applied to minimize the risk for those who must live with San Onofre as a nuclear waste dump. Our ultimate goal is to reinvigorate America's national dialog on radioactive nuclear waste.

The Coalition is equally active on economic issues. Since January 2013, we have been a formal Party to the California Public Utilities Commission investigations regarding who will pay for the defective plant, and what costs will be authorized for reimbursement from the Decommissioning Fund. Much is at stake. Will the $3.4 billion in the Fund be used solely to cover crucial tasks? Will utility customers be protected from unjustified future charges?

Representing the Coalition on behalf of Southern California ratepayers are Martha Sullivan, with 20 years' experience as a CPUC staffer, and engineer Ray Lutz, CEO of Citizens Oversight, Inc. They have formal standing as interveners along with other ratepayer advocates during four upcoming multi-year phases.

Responses received from our panel of experts, in video and written form, will serve to better inform public participation at upcoming hearings and public meetings of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). They will also provide program content for briefings and seminars held by the Coalition, with an invitation to other groups around the country to use these presentations at their own events.

We need your help in this public awareness and involvement campaign!

There is an urgent need for contributions to support expert research on the crucial facts and realities of radioactive waste, and to cover the costs of our ratepayer advocates' presence on the scene at extensive upcoming hearings. 

The basic cost is $8,500 to secure the best information and to hold the Nuclear Waste Symposium in San Clemente, along with the video copy that can be sent around the nation and world to help shut down more nuclear power plants. An additional $3,000 is required to cover the necessary expenses of ratepayer advocates. We have already received $2,825 toward the symposium and $400 toward ratepayer advocates.  Please make your tax-deductible donation TODAY, using any of the following options.

[SDCPJ] Syria – Keep telling Congress “No Attack” – HERE’S WHY

It is good - VERY good, that a possibility has opened for a negotiated settlement, to avoid a US military strike in Syria. This is the best possible outcome; no strike will mean no death, destruction, and the long list of bad consequences that such a strike would bring about. 

 

BUT: This is no time to reduce telling Congress "no attack."

The administration says that only the threat of an attack brought about the possible negotiated proposal.  DO NOT believe this.  It has been YOUR STRONG, NATION-WIDE OPPOSITION            to military action which first forced the White House to bring in Congress, and which now makes it necessary for the White House and the Pentagon to even consider a negotiated settlement. 

 

The administration will reserve the "right" to come back to Congress for approval of military action; or, to proceed with military action without Congress addressing authorization.  As we've seen time and time and time again, once a form of Congressional authorization is approved, or once an administration determines to act on its own, not matter what the "intent" was, no matter what supposed limitations are attached, the forces for war WILL BE UNLEASHED: the military lobby, the Pentagon, the munitions corporations, will be free to push through a military action and expansion – no matter what. 

 

YOUR pressure, on the White House and the Congress, is the ONLY force which has gotten us this far.  Now, it is crucial to increase the message: "no attack on Syria!  Give PEACE a chance!"

Martin Luther King Jr. also gave his famous "I have a dream" speech this day. But the Aug. 28th event was just one of many important moments within the Civil Rights movement. Much was accomplished both before and after, but today there is still more work to be done...

How are you inspired? What change will you create?
