Across the world, the sheer force of people, in non-violent but insistent demonstration, is showing that change IS possible. Change for good - change for the needs of common people, and change away from concentrated power, greed and profit at the cost of lives and the public pocketbook. Now, it is San Diego's turn. Come out in boisterous demonstration-celebration, to Balboa Park, Saturday March 19. Save the date, plan to be there! Only public pressure can force the US to avoid its own disaster. Yes to an American republic, NO to the disastrous US empire. See attached – pass this on – come out on March 19, have fun, make noise and make your voice heard. YOU have the power to force change. More information to come. |

[SDCPJ] Tunis, Cairo, now Madison WI; next: SAN DIEGO
[SDCPJ] SB 251: New bill linking draft registration to California drivers' licenses
BILL TEXT
INTRODUCED BY Senator Correa
FEBRUARY 10, 2011
An act to add Section 12801.3 to the Vehicle Code, relating to
vehicles.
LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST
SB 251, as introduced, Correa. Vehicles: driver's license:
selective service.
Existing law establishes the practices and procedures for the
issuance of an original or a renewal of a driver's license.
The federal Military Selective Service Act (federal act) requires
specified persons to register with the federal Selective Service
System.
This bill would provide that, by submitting an application for an
original or a renewal of a driver's license, a person who is required
to register pursuant to the federal act is consenting to that person'
s registration with the federal Selective Service System. The bill
would require the department to forward to the federal Selective
Service System, in an electronic format, the necessary personal
information for the registration of that person in compliance with
the federal act.
Vote: majority. Appropriation: no. Fiscal committee: yes.
State-mandated local program: no.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The Legislature finds and declares all of the
following:
(a) California has one of the lowest Selective Service System
registration compliance rates in the nation.
(b) Males who are between 18 and 26 years of age who fail to
register with the Selective Service System, as required by federal
law, face possible federal penalties and loss of federal benefits,
including student financial assistance, federal employment, such as
employment with the United States Postal Service, job training under
the Workforce Investment Act (28 U.S.C. Sec. 2801 et seq.), and
citizenship for immigrants.
(c) The failure of young men to register with the Selective
Service System has resulted in the lifetime loss of over $100,000,000
in potential benefits over the last three years for young men in
California.
(d) At least 37 states, three territories, and the District of
Columbia have enacted legislation related to the issuance of a driver'
s license in support of the Selective Service System registration.
(e) To promote the fairness and equity of any future draft, to
ensure that important benefits associated with the registration
requirement are not lost, and to promote compliance with federal law,
the driver's license application process should be revised so that
every male applicant for an original driver's license or renewal who
is between 18 and 26 years of age consents to his registration with
the Selective Service System, as required by federal law.
SEC. 2. Section 12801.3 is added to the Vehicle Code, to read:
12801.3. (a) Notwithstanding any other law, a person who is
required to be registered with the federal Selective Service System
pursuant to the federal Military Selective Service Act (50 U.S.C.
App. Sec. 451 et seq.) and who submits an application for an original
or a renewal of a driver's license is deemed to have consented to
registration with the federal Selective Service System.
(b) The submission of an application for an original or a renewal
of a driver's license by a person specified in subdivision (a) shall
establish a conclusive presumption that the person has done either of
the following:
(1) Registered with the federal Selective Service System in
compliance with the federal Military Selective Service Act.
(2) Authorized the department to forward to the federal Selective
Service System the necessary information for the Selective Service
System registration when that person is required to register under
the federal Military Selective Service Act.
(c) The department shall require an application for an original or
a renewal of a driver's license to include a notice indicating the
following:
"By submitting this application, I am consenting to registration
with the Selective Service System, if required by federal law. If I
am under 18 years of age, I understand that I will be registered upon
reaching 18 years of age."
(d) The department shall forward to the federal Selective Service
System, in an electronic format, the necessary personal information
required for the registration of a person specified in subdivision
(a).

[SDCPJ] Cultivating Compassion. A Weekend Compassionate Communication Practice Gathering. March 4-6
CULTIVATING COMPASSION
A Weekend Compassionate Communication Practice Gathering.
Private home in Encinitas
When: March 4-6 (Friday 6pm-9pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am-6pm) We live in a time of breathtaking change. The old ways of being and doing are working less and less and the new ways of living and creating are only emerging. How to be, how to show up in this transition period can be bewildering. Fortunately, many of us do remember that when things get difficult we can enter strength by opening the heart, letting it just crack open. This weekend will be devoted to precisely that! Come experience support, companionship, self-expression, inspiration, learning, and growth as we ask ourselves... . Where in my life am I unwilling to practice Compassionate Communication? . What are my blindspots? . Where in my life do I need healing? Co-inviters Tera Gardner (http://sdnvc.org/page8/page8.html) (San Diego) Sunny Goodwin (Oceanside) Amy McQuillan (http://sdnvc.org/page8/page8.html) (Encinitas) James Prieto, Compassionate Connecting (http://www.compassionateconnecting.com/) (Aliso Viejo) What: an opportunity for dedicated NVC practice on those topics which are most alive for us. The agenda will be co-created by the participants and practice will take place in self-organizing concurrent sessions. You can learn more about the format here. (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YZlm4HtO8X9HOwUD2wjBGxhHClH77zv5NDi7G8PkDoU/edit?authkey=CPbe-MUN&hl=en#) You can see the draft program here. (http://tinyurl.com/compassionflow) Requested contribution: $95 Friday through Sunday; $30 Friday only; $40 Saturday or Sunday only; $65 Friday and Saturday or Sunday. Pay the most you can afford. No one turned away for lack of funds. Financial ability should never get in the way of learning. Food: Bring a snack to share. Bring a lunch to share or dine nearby. Curious what happens at such an event? Browse harvest books from previous gatherings.(https://docs.google.com/document/d/15fIblvPd9WDpDMjnVctPxLksGJfEiH63604I4lxLFG8/edit?hl=en&authkey=CMKa0OsD) Register at: http://compassion5sd.eventbrite.com For more information, read the FAQ, (https://docs.google.com/document/edit?id=1ISpwtZmcty293ZSu-S0oRkhAUd3UUratZ5s7MpsqYDw&authkey=CPLtyrsP#) or contact the organizer and convenor, Raffi Aftandelian, at raffi_1970@yahoo.com Date of May 2011 Cultivating Compassion Weekend Gathering: April 29-May 1
. When it comes to living daily from compassion, what has most life for me?
. What are my challenges? Where am I getting stuck?
. Where might I want to request empathy?
. What do I know about living from the heart?
