[SDCPJ] Upcoming networking luncheon on 7/21/10

   We are about to celebrate the three month anniversary of the Gulf Oil Disaster just as BP is succeeding in tapping the well that blew in April.  In keeping with like gatherings around the country this week, we are looking forward toa meeting at 12 Noon on Wed.,7/21/10, that is aligned with the organizations and networks which came together in re "Earth is For People, Not Corporations," on 7/01/10 in San Diego , at the 1^st UU Church of S.D.

 Whether or not Marjorie can make it, I would like to invite you tho this Potluck Luncheon from 12 Noon to 1:30, on Wednesday, 7/21/10, at the Linda Vista Community Center, 2750 Wheatstone Ave., San Diego , CA 92111 .  

There, we will ask you to present a little bit about your organization's plans in the near term and what types of help you will need in order to carry them out.  We would also like to know what knowledge or expertise your organizational leaders posses that could help the work of other groups.

  

    Most of you know that we lost some recent elections that, if we progressives had been more united, clearer in our message, and better organized to effect  a greater turnout, might not have happened.  Here I am speaking of the loss of the Fair Elections proposition 15 at the State Level, the Strong Mayor Election at the San Diego City Level, the Chula Vista Labor Agreement Measure at the local level, and the loss by Mary Salas, in the Assembly Member Election at the State Level, to Juan Vargas by less than 50 votes.

   There is a crying need for us to look at what we are doing, how we are appealing to others to join with us in doing it, and who we are allied with to increase the strength of our support when we need it.  These are doable tasks and learned behaviors.  Please come to take part in this unique gathering.

For everyone who is concerned about the impact of military recruitment and the militarization of our schools –

 

The National Network Opposing the Militarization of Youth (NNOMY) has completely redesigned its Web site: www.nnomy.org. It now has broader content, more resources to aid organizers, and information to answer basic questions that arise among young people, parents, teachers and community activists.

 

Special features of the new site:

• The documents archive is reorganized (now includes more school district policies, fact sheets and other helpful items.)

• Registered users can now directly upload documents (fliers, brochures, links, etc.) for the archive.

• Registered users can submit activity reports that will be publicly available and searchable.

• The organization database is now easier to search (current number of groups listed = 143).

• As always, users can add organizations to the national list of groups that are doing counter-recruitment/truth-in-recruitment work.

• The alternative careers lists for all states and several U.S. territories have been updated.

• A parallel site in Spanish is being built.

• An automatically updated news feed has been added for recruiting-related articles (courtesy of counter-recruitment.blogspot.com)

If the Tax doesn't pass, there will definitely have to be 1,000 teacher layoffs, 500 classified employee layoffs and much more!  Besides this being detrimental to the children, the District will also suffer a drop in its credit rating which will seriously slow down Prop "S" construction projects!

Let's get a large crowd to attend on Tuesday, July 13 at 5:00 pm and help Richard protect our kids and our jobs!

Remember there are folks who want to destroy Public Education!

Feel free to speak - even if your comments are very brief.  This Parcel Tax is being put forward to benefit all of us; so it's OK if we have a number of people from all over the community make brief statements.

 

Speak from the heart. Use your own words (not words that some political consultant invents for you). Speak as a parent/teacher/student/grandmother/small business owner or whatever you are.

 

The most important points to make (and you do NOT need to make all of these and you can/should/need to make these in your own words) are:

 

NEED.

§         Our schools desperately need the money.

§         We've cut the amount we spend each year per student by 20%.

§         Use your own examples of how you've seen classroom budgets cut.

§         We've increased class sizes and cut critical academic programs.

§         We've reduced the school year by 5 days while kids in other states and other countries are attending school much longer.

§         No Mas. No More Cuts.

 

WE CAN'T AFFORD ANY MORE CUTS.

§         If this Parcel Tax fails, we're going to have to cut 1,000 teachers and 500 school staff.

§         If this Parcel Tax fails, there will be no more high school sports and no more music and art.

§         If this Parcel Tax fails, class sizes will increase.

§         If this Parcel Tax fails, the District will be forced to close 5 elementary schools.

§         If this Parcel Tax fails, there will be no more school librarians, nurses or counselors.

 

THIS IS A SOURCE OF FUNIDNG THAT SACRAMENTO CAN NOT TAKE AWAY.

§         The state is a mess and is failing our schools.

§         The state has cut more than $300 million in funding to San Diego Schools - and more cuts are coming.

§         We can't rely on the state.

§         Because of state cuts, thousands of teachers have been laid off across California.

§         Because of state cuts, California has fallen to 47th out of 50 state in per capita student funding. We used to be in the top 5.

§         We need a local source of school funding that Sacramento can NOT take away.

 

EVERY PENNY FROM THIS MEASURE WILL GO DIRECTLY INTO THE CLASSROOM.

§         None of it can go for administrators' salaries or overhead.

§         All of it must be spent to

§         Lower class size, or

§         For direct support for Academic Programs, including Music and Art, as well as Math, Science and English.

§         There is an independent oversight committee and annual audits are required to insure these funds are spent as promised.

Last week, the House of Representatives voted 215-210 for $33 billion
to fund Barack Obama's troop increase in Afghanistan. But there was
considerable opposition to giving the President a blank check. One
hundred sixty-two House members supported an amendment that would have
tied the funding to a withdrawal timetable. One hundred members voted
for another amendment that would have rejected the $33 billion for the
30,000 new troops already on their way to Afghanistan; that amendment
would have required that the money be spent to redeploy our troops out
of Afghanistan. Democrats voting for the second amendment included
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and nine Republicans. Both amendments
failed to pass.

The new appropriation is in addition to the $130 billion Congress has
already approved for Iraq and Afghanistan this year. And the 2010
Pentagon budget is $693 billion, more than all other discretionary
spending programs combined.

Our economic crisis is directly tied to the cost of the war. We are in
desperate need of money for education and health care. The $1 million
per year it costs to maintain a single soldier in Afghanistan could
pay for 20 green jobs.

Not only is the war bankrupting us, it has come at a tragic cost in
lives. June was the deadliest month for U.S. troops in Afghanistan. In
addition to the 1,149 American soldiers killed in Afghanistan, untold
numbers of Afghan civilians have died from the war - untold because
the Defense Department refuses to maintain statistics of anyone except
U.S. personnel. After all, Donald Rumsfeld quipped in 2005, "death has
a tendency to encourage a depressing view of war."

There are other "depressing" aspects of this war as well. As Gen.
Stanley McChrystal reported just days before he got the axe, there is
a "resilient and growing insurgency" with high levels of violence and
corruption within the Karzai government. McChrystal's remarks were
considered "off message" by the White House, which was also irked by
the general's criticisms of Obama officials in a Rolling Stone
article. McChrystal believes that you can't kill your way out of
Afghanistan. "The Russians killed 1 million Afghans and that didn't
work."

He and his successor, Gen. David Petraeus, likely disagree on the need
to prevent civilian casualties (known as "Civ Cas"). McChrystal
instituted some of the most stringent rules of engagement the U.S.
military has had in a war zone: "Patrol only in areas that you are
reasonably certain that you will not have to defend yourselves with
lethal force." Commanders cannot fire on buildings or other places if
they have reason to believe civilians might be present unless their
own forces are in imminent danger of being overrun. And they must end
engagements and withdraw rather than risk harming noncombatants.
McChrystal knows that for every innocent person you kill, you create
new enemies; he calls it "insurgent math." According to the Los
Angeles Times, McChrystal "was credited with bringing about a
substantial drop in the proportion of civilian casualties suffered at
the hands of NATO's International Security Assistance Force and its
Afghan allies."

While testifying in Congress before he was confirmed to take
McChrystal's place, Petraeus told senators that some U.S. soldiers had
complained about the former's rules of engagement aimed at preventing
civilian casualties.

According to the Rolling Stone article, Obama capitulated to
McChrystal's insistence that more troops were needed in Afghanistan.
In his December 1 speech at West Point, the article says, "the
president laid out all the reasons why fighting the war in Afghanistan
is a bad idea: It's expensive; we're in an economic crisis; a
decade-long commitment would sap American power; Al Qaeda has shifted
its base of operations to Pakistan. Then," the article continued,
"without ever using the words 'victory' or 'win,' Obama announced that
he would send an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan, almost as
many as McChrystal had requested."

Both Obama and Petraeus no longer speak of "victory" over the Taliban;
they both hold open the possibility of settlement with the Taliban.
Indeed, Maj. Gen. Bill Mayville, chief of operations for McChrystal,
told Rolling Stone, "It's not going to look like a win, smell like a
win or taste like a win."

The majority of Americans now oppose the war in Afghanistan. Fareed
Zakaria had some harsh words for the war on his CNN show, saying that
"the whole enterprise in Afghanistan feels disproportionate, a very
expensive solution to what is turning out to be a small but real
problem." Noting that CIA director Leon Panetta admitted that the
number of Al Qaeda left in Afghanistan may be 50 to 100, Zakaria
asked, "why are we fighting a major war" there? "Last month alone
there were more than 100 NATO troops killed in Afghanistan," he said.
"That's more than one allied death for each living Al Qaeda member in
the country in just one month." Citing estimates that the war will
cost more than $100 billion in 2010 alone, Zakaria observed, "That's a
billion dollars for every member of Al Qaeda thought to be living in
Afghanistan in one year." He queried, "Why are we investing so much
time, energy, and effort when Al Qaeda is so weak?" And Zakaria
responded to the argument that we should continue fighting the Taliban
because they are allied with Al Qaeda by saying, "this would be like
fighting Italy in World War II after Hitler's regime had collapsed and
Berlin was in flames just because Italy had been allied with Germany."

There is also division in the Republican ranks over the war.
Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele made some gutsy
comments about the war in Afghanistan, saying it is not winnable and
calling it a "war of Obama's choosing." (Even though George W. Bush
first invaded Afghanistan, Obama made the escalation of U.S.
involvement a centerpiece of his campaign.) Steele said that if Obama
is "such a student of history, has he not understood that, you know,
that's the one thing you don't do, is engage in a land war in
Afghanistan? Everyone who has tried, over 1,000 years of history, has
failed." Interestingly, Republicans Lindsey Graham and John McCain
slammed Steele and jumped to Obama's defense. Rep. Ron Paul, however,
agreed with Steele, saying, "Michael Steele has it right, and
Republicans should stick by him."

Obama will likely persist with his failed war. He appears to be
stumbling along the same path that Lyndon Johnson followed. Johnson
lost his vision for a "Great Society" when he became convinced that
his legacy depended on winning the Vietnam War. It appears that Obama
has similarly lost his way.

[SDCPJ] Change Southwestern College's Governing Board!! Tim Nader's Fundraiser Flyer

Dear SDCPJ Members,

You are invited to a Fundraiser,

The teacher's union (SCEA) and the staff union (CSEA) at Southwestern College are working hard to replace our current Governing Board. Southwestern College is really at stake here, and we need new, responsible and effective leadership to get us through these times. The current Board's initial acceptance of the Blackwater contract and the protracted struggle that campus and community members had to engage in to finally have the contract rescinded reflects the mind set of the current Governing Board. 

When Tim Nader and Norma L. Hernandez decided to run for our Governing Board our campus staff and faculty stepped up to support both of them. We are delighted that Tim and Norma are willing to take on the task of restoring respect and civility to  our campus.  Our current Governing Board does not even possess the requisite skills needed to conduct a professional meeting, and openly fight with each other and the public in open meetings (in addition to maintaining a top heavy management and cutting 25% of our course offerings to students). They are simply out of control.

[SDCPJ] McChrystal: Marjah offensive was "a bleeding ulcer"

On June 22nd, Rolling Stone published a candid interview with General Stanley McChrystal and members of his staff. "The Runaway General" is valuable because it gives an unfiltered look at how the men who led the war in Afghanistan truly feel. Nine years ago our government sold the American people snake oil to get us into Afghanistan, and they did it again with Iraq. But as this article shows, they've never stopped selling it: "The commander of all U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan is sitting in a four-star suite at the Hôtel Westminster in Paris. He's in France to sell his new war strategy to our NATO allies - to keep up the fiction, in essence, that we actually have allies.   Opposition to the war has already toppled the Dutch government, forced the resignation of Germany's president and sparked both Canada and the Netherlands to announce the withdrawal of their 4,500 troops." We have to press harder because we're coming to a turning point. We must force Obama to withdraw just like his NATO allies have. In the words of one retired U.S. colonel Douglas MacGregor, "The entire COIN strategy is a fraud perpetuated on the American people." Repeatedly, the White House and Congress have been given the right information, we have to keep pressuring them to make the right decision. With the $33 Billion war supplemental funding bill planned for a vote this week, we have a critical opportunity to pressure Congress to end the war. Call Congress at (202) 224-3121 or use our call-script here. Tell your Members to vote "No" on all future war funding bills. And then tell them we need an exit strategy from Afghanistan right away. Ask them to co-sponsor the Afghanistan Exit Strategy bill which is Representatives McGovern and Jones' HR 5015 in the House, and Senator Feingold's S. 3197 in the Senate. Tell them it's time to focus on a political solution and a comprehensive peace plan in the region while investing in Afghan-led aid and development. Thank you,   Kevin M. KPBS-TV premieres "Imagining Tijuana," Tuesday June 29th at 11PM.  It's  one-hour documentary focusing on the city's unique history, contemporary realities, and its place in the popular imagination.   Artists, writers, sports figures, business executives and renowned professionals from Tijuana's Paseo de la Fama (Walk of Fame) take part in a lively exchange about Tijuana's current situation as well as the possibilities and challenges  confronting their community.

 

Award winning director Isaac Artenstein ("Break of Dawn," "Border Brujo," "Tijuana Jews") juxtaposes news footage, contemporary artwork, vintage post cards, landmarks and other images to create a dynamic and compelling narrative.  The original soundtrack by Tijuana's own Jaime Valle helps capture the themes and sensibilities of this near-mythic border city --- and our own imagination.

9:00 am sharp: San Ysidro/Tijuana border-bus station. We will walk together to cross the border gate and travel to our locations in Tijuana using chartered buses for transportation.

 

9:45-10 am: The crosses at the border: 4,500 immigrants have died trying to cross the border.

 

10:30- 11:15 am: Otay Industrial Park: Sanyo, Metales y Derivados, other maquiladoras

 

NOTE: We will visit the Tijuana industrial area but won't enter any factory.

 

11:30 - 12:00 pm: Community Ejido Chilpancingo-Rio Alamar: industrialization, health, environment

 

12:30- 1 pm: Lunch

 

1-2:30 pm: Maquiladora workers and Indigenous immigrants: NAFTA and fair trade, immigration and exploitation, industrialization and labor health, activism and social change

Travel Alert U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE, Bureau of Consular Affairs

The Department of State has issued this Travel Warning to inform U.S. citizens traveling to and living in Mexico about the security situation in MexicoŠ

   Millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year.  This includes tens of thousands who cross the border every day for study, tourism or business and at least one million U.S. citizens who live in Mexico.  The Mexican government makes a considerable effort to protect U.S. citizens and other visitors to major tourist destinations. Resort areas and tourist destinations in Mexico do not see the levels of drug-related violence and crime reported in the border region and in areas along major drug trafficking routes. Nevertheless, crime and violence are serious problems. While most victims of violence are Mexican citizens associated with criminal activity, the security situation poses serious risks for U.S. citizens as well.

   It is imperative that U.S. citizens understand the risks involved in travel to Mexico, how best to avoid dangerous situations, and who to contact if one becomes a victim of crime or violence. Common-sense precautions such as visiting only legitimate business and tourist areas during daylight hours, and avoiding areas where criminal activity might occur, can help ensure that travel to Mexico is safe and enjoyable.  U.S. citizen victims of crime in Mexico are urged to contact the consular section of the nearest U.S. Consulate or Embassy for advice and assistance. Contact information is provided at the end of this message.

General Conditions: Since 2006, the Mexican government has engaged in an extensive effort to combat drug-trafficking organizations (DTOs).  Mexican DTOs, meanwhile, have been engaged in a vicious struggle with each other for control of trafficking routes.  In order to combat violence, the government of Mexico has deployed military troops throughout the country.  U.S. citizens should expect to encounter military and other law enforcement checkpoints when traveling in Mexico and are urged to cooperate fully. In confrontations with the Mexican army and police, DTOs have employed automatic weapons and grenades.  In some cases, assailants have worn full or partial police or military uniforms and have used vehicles that resemble police vehicles.  According to published reports, 22,700 people have been killed in narcotics-related violence since 2006.  The great majority of those killed have been members of DTOs. However, innocent bystanders have been killed in shootouts between DTOs and Mexican law enforcement.

Recent violent attacks and persistent security concerns have prompted the U.S. Embassy to urge U.S. citizens to defer unnecessary travel to Michoacán and Tamaulipas, to parts of Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Durango, and CoahuilaŠ and to advise U.S. citizens residing or traveling in those areas to exercise extreme caution.

Violence Along the U.S.-Mexico Border: Much of the country's narcotics-related violence has occurred in the northern border region. For example, since 2006, three times as many people have been murdered in Ciudad Juarez, in the state of Chihuahua, across from El Paso, Texas, than in any other city in Mexico.  More than half of all Americans killed in Mexico in FY 2009 whose deaths were reported to the U.S. Embassy were killed in the border cities of Ciudad Juarez and Tijuana.

Since 2006, large firefights have taken place in towns and cities in many parts of Mexico, often in broad daylight on streets and other public venues.  Such firefights have occurred mostly in northern Mexico, including Ciudad Juarez, Tijuana, Chihuahua City, Nogales, Nuevo Laredo, Piedras Negras, Reynosa, Matamoros and Monterrey. During some of these incidents, U.S. citizens have been trapped and temporarily prevented from leaving the area.

The situation in northern Mexico remains fluid; the location and timing of future armed engagements cannot be predicted.  U.S. citizens are urged to exercise extreme caution when traveling throughout the region, particularly in those areas specifically mentioned in this Travel Warning.

In recent months, DTOs have used stolen trucks to block major highways and thus prevent the military from responding to criminal activity, most notably in the area around Monterrey.  Also in Monterrey, DTOs have kidnapped guests out of reputable hotels in the downtown area, blocking off adjoining streets to prevent law enforcement response.  DTOs have also attacked Mexican government facilities such as military barracks and a customs and immigration post.

U.S. citizens should defer non-essential travel to Ciudad Juarez, ChihuahuaŠ

The Consular agency in Reynosa, Tamaulipas was closed temporarily in February 2010 in response to firefights between police and DTOs and between DTOs.  In April 2010, a grenade thrown into the Consulate compound at 11:00 PM caused damage to the U.S. Consulate General in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. The Consulate General in Nuevo Laredo and the Consular Agency in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, were closed for one day as a resultŠ

Between 2006 and 2009, the number of narcotics-related murders in the state of Durango increased ten-foldŠ

Travelers on the highways between Monterrey and the United States (notably through Nuevo Laredo and Matamoros) have been targeted for robbery that has resulted in violence and have also been caught in incidents of gunfire between criminals and Mexican law enforcement.  Criminals have followed and harassed U.S. citizens traveling in their vehicles in border areas including Nuevo Laredo, Matamoros, and TijuanaŠ

The situation in the state of Chihuahua, specifically Ciudad Juarez, is of special concernŠ

Safety Recommendations: U.S. citizens who believe they are being targeted for kidnapping or other crimes should notify Mexican law enforcement officials and the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City or the nearest U.S. consulate as soon as possible.  Any U.S. visitor who suspects they are a target should consider returning to the United States immediately.  U.S. citizens should be aware that many cases of violent crime are never resolved by Mexican law enforcement, and the U.S. government has no authority to investigate crimes committed in Mexico.

U.S. citizens should make every attempt to travel on main roads during daylight hours, particularly the toll ("cuota") roads, which generally are more secureŠ

U.S. citizen visitors are encouraged to stay in the well-known tourist areas.  Travelers should leave their itinerary with a friend or family member not traveling with them, avoid traveling alone, and check with their cellular provider prior to departure to confirm that their cell phone is capable of roaming on GSM or 3G international networksŠ

Do not display expensive-looking jewelry, large amounts of money, or other valuable itemsŠ U.S. citizens should be alert for credit card fraud, especially outside major commercial establishments.

 U.S. citizens should be alert to pickpockets and general street crime throughout Mexico, but especially in large cities.  Between FY 2006 and FY 2009 the number of U.S. passports reported stolen in Mexico rose from 184 to 288.

Demonstrations and Large Public Gatherings: Demonstrations occur frequently throughout Mexico and usually are peaceful.  However, even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate to violence unexpectedlyŠ During demonstrations or law enforcement operations, U.S. citizens are advised to remain in their homes or hotels, avoid large crowds, and avoid the downtown and surrounding areas.

Demonstrators in Mexico may block traffic on roads, including major arteries, or take control of toll-booths on highways.  U.S. citizens should avoid confrontations in such situationsŠ

   The Mexican Constitution prohibits political activities by foreigners, and such actions may result in detention and/or deportation.  U.S. citizens are therefore advised to avoid participating in demonstrations or other activities that might be deemed political by Mexican authorities.  As is always the case in any large gathering, U.S. citizens should remain alert to their surroundings.

I understand that there are great differences between this country and my own. These differences include climate, living conditions, diet, water quality, transportation, medical care, and physical safety. I also understand that health care facilities in Mexico are minimal and that access to all types of health care, including for emergencies, may be difficult.  I understand that I will not be able to expect the same type of health care as I would receive in my own country. I understand that the San Diego Maquiladora Workers' Solidarity Network (SDMWSN) and other individuals and organizations that sponsor, organize and promote this maquiladora tour are not responsible for my health care or coverage, either during the tour or afterwards. Furthermore, I realize that there are no guarantees against personal injury, robbery, or death while part of this Maquiladora Tour.

 

I understand that there are specific legal requirements for travel to Mexico, and illegal activity could result in grave legal consequences for myself, the SDMWSN, and individuals and organizations that sponsor, organize and promote this maquiladora tour.  For this reason, I agree to abide by Mexican law while I am in Mexico. In signing this document I expressly release, discharge, and hold harmless the SDMWSN and individuals and organizations that sponsor, organize and promote this maquiladora tour to the maximum extent permitted by law in any state, territory, district, or country.
