WORKSHOP

Hands of Peace is a San Diego organization, affiliated with the Alternatives to Violence Project USA.

Alternatives to Violence Project a non-profit/non-denominational 501(3)(c) organization

WHAT: A fun, hands-on, experiential workshop – no lectures! The activities focus on building communication skills and a sense of trust and community within the group. The goals include learning behaviors that reduce the level of conflicts rather than escalating or avoiding them.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: The workshop can be taken purely for personal growth or to determine if such a workshop might benefit your work or community team. Also this workshop is the first step of training to become a facilitator of Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) workshops in the prison system or community. WHO FACILITATES THE WORKSHOP: Hands of Peace/AVP facilitators are trained, experienced, unpaid volunteers.

You may have heard me say that I am a nonviolence training junkie!  And if you are trying to practice being more nonviolence more of the time in your life I do suggest taking as many difference nonviolence trainings as possible - you will get something different from each training and increase the likelihood of responding (with nonviolence) rather than reacting (out of anger, frustration, fear, etc.)

 

AVP Training was developed by the Quakers more than 30 years and includes community training as well as a program in prisons.  I recently attended AVP Basic Training inside Donovan State Prison and felt it was the most powerful nonviolence training I have ever participated in (as facilitator or participant).

MAS Freedom San Diego, The Free Palestine Alliance, ANSWER Coalition, and other organizations and individuals are calling for a national days of action against Israel on Friday June 4th and Saturday June 5th  to denounce the Israeli military massacre of human rights activists on a Gaza aid convoy. At least 9 international activists were killed by Israel , with dozens injured. The death toll may rise.

The attack on the Freedom Flotilla is a crime against humanity. The Gaza aid convoy, made up of 6 ships bringing medical, construction and school supplies to besieged Palestinians in Gaza , was attacked in international waters by 14 Israeli ships. Heavily armed Israeli commandos dropped onto the ships from helicopters and opened fire on the activists.

Gaza has been blockaded by Israel since 2007 with full backing by the U.S. government. The blockade is a brutal form of collective punishment aimed at strangling the Palestinian people.

Come out Friday to protest this outrage and to demand an end to the siege of Gaza!!!

Dear Friends:

I attended the march and rally against SB 1070 in Phoenix on Saturday, and a meeting of national Latino leaders (Latino Congreso) on Sunday. This issue is not going away. The state of Arizona has awakened a sleeping giant! If Arizona gets away with this, other right-wingers will be emboldened to take similar repressive measures in other states and localities. On the other hand, if we put up enough resistance other states will think twice.

One Latino leader put this scapegoating in the context of the huge transfer of wealth which has taken place in the past few years. Working people have lost jobs, home equity, the value of pensions and investments, etc. - while the top 1% have become far richer. People are confused, fearful, and looking for someone to blame. Their situation is getting worse at the same time as demographics are changing and their communities are getting more colorful. "Illegals" are an easy scapegoat - easier than blaming the system they pay lip service to loving even as it screws them time and again. (If you haven't seen Capitalism, A Love Story, please do so ASAP)

In the meantime there are two actions this weekend which deserve your support. A flyer for each is attached. On Friday June 4 at 3:30pm we'll protest at Brian Bilbray's Solana Beach office. In supporting SB 1070 he claimed he can tell legals from illegals by their clothing, specifically their shoes. This protest will seek to save the SOLE of Congressman Bilbray.

On Sunday June 6 at 3pm, the San Diego Organizing Project and Faith Works will join the PICO national network which will hold rallies for immigration reform in five cities. The San Diego rally will be at 3pm. The details are in the flyer. This will be a faith-based event consisting of clergy and lay people from many denominations and faith traditions.

Please consider writing letters to the editor on this important issue. On May 22 some of us saw the film 9500 Liberty which showed that Arizona-style repression didn't work in Prince William County, Virginia. You can see some of this documentary at 9500Liberty.com

All students and faculty of conscious against Israeli crimes are joining together for a silent protest and demonstration on UC San Diego Library Walk Tuesday, June 1 from 12:00PM-2:00PM

It is imperative that you attend this rally.

Human rights activist, elected officials, former diplomats, aid workers and activists were en route by sea to Gaza to break Israel's blockade of the tiny strip of land. A total of six ships, including two cargo ships and other passenger vehicles, were carrying more than 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid to the besieged region, which has been under Israeli blockade since 2006.

Israel has also commandeered Free Gaza Movement vessels in the past. The Israeli military took action against unarmed peace and civil resistance volunteers. Furthermore, a fleet of so-called Israeli citizens were also en route to intercept and harass the flotilla. AMP and the Free Gaza Movement are extremely concerned about the safety of the humanitarian activists who were aboard the Freedom Flotilla.

The Free Gaza flotilla was on its way to Gaza. Unlike previous Free Gaza boats, this flotilla includes large vessels, it was carrying substantial amounts of reconstruction supplies, medical and school supplies, and 800 passengers from 50 countries. It couldn't afford to fail. It was an opportunity to denounce the inhumanity of Israel's three year long siege and running. We can not wait until something happens before we mobilize. If we are to be helpful in this effort, we need to begin support activities immediately!

If the convoy has already been attacked or blockaded, our demonstration will be a powerful protest. If it has not yet arrived, our demonstration will be a demand that it be allowed to pass in peace.
