[SDCPJ] Rminder:Rabbi Michael Lerner Lecture this Thursday

Good News!!  Rabbi Lerner has recovered from his lung cancer operation and will come to San Diego to deliver two lectures.  The first will be on Oct. 15^th at 7 p.m. at Linder Hall at the First United Methodist Church in Mission Valley, S.D.  This will be co-sponsored by the Network of Spiritual Progressives (NSP) and the San Diego School of Christian Studies located at the Methodist Church.  Lerner will speak on the role of liberal and progressive politics in the era of Obama and what that role must be to achieve U.S. and Global survival.  He will show what a progressive alliance between religious, secular, and the growing sector of “spiritual but not religious” Americans can achieve for a fundamental transformation and healing in American and global society.  Attached is the flyer for this event and we ask you to spread the word far and wide.

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Legal Victories Bring Light to Battered Men Again

LOS ANGELES/October 9, 2009 -- October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the National Coalition For Men (NCFM) anticipates two successful high profile legal rulings this year and last year in West Virginia and California, respectively, will bring needed attention to the hidden, overlooked side of partner abuse - male victims.

On October 2, 2009, a West Virginia judge struck down state rules for regulating domestic violence shelters because they operate "on the premise that only men can be batterers and only women can be victims" and "exclude adult and adolescent males from their statutory right to safety and security free from domestic violence" based only on their gender."

One year ago on October 14, 2008, NCFM won a landmark appellate victory in California, which held that state laws violated men's equal protection rights by excluded male victims from state-funded domestic violence services. The court found "domestic violence is a serious problem for both women and men" and that "men experience significant levels of domestic violence as victims." The court also found 15% of state-funded programs deny men services, but NCFM believes it is higher, as programs often "help" by only giving referrals.

More attention is needed for male victims and their children, as both are overlooked in state-funded outreach and services. And, for several reasons, men are already less likely than women to seek help for domestic violence. A major national study funded by the Centers for Disease Control in 2007 found women initiate or commit at least half of heterosexual domestic violence and both sexes suffered significant injuries. http://pn.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/42/15/31-a

This is supported by more than 200 other empirical studies summarized in an online bibliography by Professor Martin Fiebert of California State University. See www.csulb.edu/~mfiebert/assault.htm This research is more reliable than crime data because men are less likely to report the violence or to respond positively to crime surveys. But regardless of statistics, services should be need-based, not gender-based. When victims don't get help, the violence often escalates, and children are emotionally damaged by witnessing it.

SPECIAL NOTE: 

The protest (in bold below) against the WBC at San Diego City High School (1405 Park Blvd) directly precedes the SDCPCJ "NO WAR in AFGHANISTAN" protest -- also downtown at the Federal Building from 4-6pm.  

The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) announced it will be protesting at several locations throughout San Diego County. The protests are scheduled to take place Friday, October 16.

Founded in 1955 by controversial pastor Fred Phelps, members of the congregation commonly protest against homosexuality and often picket funerals of soldiers and those who have died of AIDS. The church's most high-profile protest came at the 1998 funeral of Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student who was killed because he was gay. Congregants gathered outside the church held up signs saying "No Fags in Heaven" and "God Hates Fags."

Among the list of protest sites is San Diego High School.

"WBC will be around and about because the local High School thinks it is soooo cool to be fags," reports the WBC website. "And [they] no doubt just love Matthew Sheperd." The church's "Quit Telling Kids it's OK to be Fags" demonstration will take place from 3:20 - 3:50 P.M.

The WBC will also be staging protests at San Diego Jewish Publications, United Jewish Federation of San Diego City, Jewish Family Services, Chabad at La Costa, and the Congregation For Hadas. While WBC members have protested at Jewish institutions over the years, such institutions were not a major focus for the group until April 2009. Since then, WBC has targeted dozens of Jewish institutions around the country, from Israeli consulates to synagogues to Jewish community centers.

    Once in a while a group gets its courage up and takes its meeting out into a part of the community that it is really concerned about.  The United For A Hate Free San Diego is doing just that this coming Thursday evening.  The audience at the Ronald Reagen Community center may prove to be a raucous one, peopled largely by those who are in denial about the Hate Crime problem that, based on data from the FBI and the CA Attorney General’s Office, really exists in their environs. I am attaching a recent article in the East County Magazine which underscores the importance of this meeting.   If you at all can see your way clear to be with us there that evening to register your protest of the series of hate crimes that have been perpetrated in that area, recently,, please rsvp and join us there on Oct. 1^st.  Thanks.

Summit in East County to Focus on Activities of Hate Groups

and hate-motivated behavior

 

 

SAN DIEGO - James McElroy from Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) will headline United for a Hate Free San Diego’s second annual Hate Crimes Summit with a presentation on the recent increase in hate crimes and the disturbing rise of hate groups over the past decade.

 

United for a Hate Free San Diego (UFHFSD), a coalition of faith and community leaders will hold its Hate Crimes Summit on Thursday, October 1, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Ronald Reagan Community Center, 195 E. Douglas Ave, in El Cajon.

 

Other panelists will include representatives the Sheriff's and District Attorney's offices. 

The Southern Poverty Law Center has reported in 2008 that since 2000 hate groups have grown from 602 to 926 nationwide, an increase of fifty-percent in eight years. California leads the nation with 84 hate groups with the largest concentration in Southern California.

 

Recent months have also seen an increase in hate crimes and hate-motivated behaviors committed by people under the age of 21 in San Diego.  Incidents have ranged from racial slurs painted on the vehicle of an African-American family to a shooting by an alleged white supremacist that resulted in the loss of a Latino student’s eye.

 

Assembly Member Lori Saldaña (D-San Diego), the founder of UFHFSD, said she was disturbed by this trend of younger people participating in these acts of racially-motivated violence and vandalism.

 

“In some cases, it seems, we haven’t done a good job of inoculating young people against the influences of prejudice,” Saldaña said. “These influences can take the form of the latent bigotry heard on talk radio and television, the casual racism and homophobia heard in conversations with family and friends or the outright hatred encountered in the music and on websites produced by groups like neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan.

 

“Our job as parents, teachers, elected officials and faith leaders is to make it clear that this behavior is never acceptable, legal or sanctioned,” Saldaña said.

National Call-in Day:  No Timeline! No Exit Strategy! Stop the Funding! Wednesday September 30   Congress Should Vote "No" on 2010 Military Budget! To reach the Washington Switchboard: 202-224-3121 or 202-225-3121   Congress is steps away from passing a $625.8 billion 2010 Military Budget, including $128.2 billion to fund the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq through September 2010.   So far the White House has offered no timetable and no "exit strategy" for Afghanistan. Instead General McChrystal and other military leaders are pressing for the addition of tens of thousands of new American troops and a commitment to remain in Afghanistan for years to come.   All too evident is the original meaning of "a quagmire"-when every step taken to escalate a war makes it more difficult to leave. At this critical moment, constituents need to send a powerful message to their members of Congress that this dangerous course must be stopped. Our government should adopt an exit strategy from Afghanistan based on all-party talks, regional diplomacy, unconditional humanitarian aid, economic assistance and timelines for the near-term withdrawal of American and NATO combat troops. The national tour highlights the continuing use of the “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” policy to fire fit, competent, and highly skilled Americans from the U.S. military solely because of their sexual orientation. “Voices of Honor” features a diverse group of gay, lesbian, and straight veterans who have served under the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, including Alex Nicholson, a former U.S. Army Human Intelligence Collector who was discharged under DADT from Ft.
