Consolidated Brig at MCAS Miramar after serving his 15 month sentence for
resisting deployment to the War in Iraq by deserting to Canada and being
extradited into US custody.

 

Come meet/greet Robin on Sunday at 4:30 PM. Light refreshments will be
served. Feel free to bring some if you wish.

Robin (25) was released from the brig on July 9th, but will stay in San
Diego to attend the Sunday, July 12th event at the Quaker Meeting House in
La Jolla.

 

Robin was likely provided $20 and a one way plane ticket to Idaho (his US
home of record) by the federal government.

 

Robin has a 2 year old son and his son's mother has MS. Both live in
Canada.

 

Several folks have asked what they can do to support Robin Long and his
family financially now that he has been released.

Synopsis: "The Talk of Return" is Part V of "Chronicles of a Refugee", a groundbreaking six part powerful and engaging documentary series by Perla Issa, Aseel Mansour and Adam Shapiro. The series is directly relevant to the Right to Return Movement including Al-Awda's advocacy for the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their lands and homes of origin.

Through interviews and archival footage, "The Talk of Return" explores the effectiveness of work done previously for achieving the return of Palestinian refugees to their homes. This must see episode also looks at how, nowadays, Palestinian refugees around the world are responding to the institutional stagnation in implementing their Right of Return. There are many good lessons and warnings in the documentary stated by fellow Palestinians in their own words.

This documentary is very important and timely viewing for all who advocate for the Palestinian right to return and who correctly insist on keeping the Right to Return central to any discussion of the Palestinian cause.

The film showing will be followed by a discussion to share opinions and insight.

Some interviews in "The Talk of Return" were filmed at Al-Awda Center in Carlsbad by Perla Issa and Adam Shapiro in March 2008.

The address for Southwestern College is 900 Otay Lakes Rd. Chula
Vista, (not L Street).

It is south on 805 to H street, go East on H street four miles or so
until you hit Otay Lakes Rd. Turn right and the second driveway goes
into the Center of campus. Room 214 is at the front of the campus.

As you may know, Blackwater and Southwestern College (SWC) signed an
agreement that lets the SWC Police Academy students use the Blackwater
Otay Mesa facility. According to SWC, they couldn't keep using the
Sheriff's firing range for their students because of their inability to
schedule the trainings ahead.

This is a lie!

I personally visited all the firing ranges listed by the SWC staff,
which they claimed are not available to them. I found out that six out
the seven facilities are indeed available to use for their students. I
spoke with several people at the Sheriff's range who told me they were
surprised to find out through the news that SWC claimed not to be able
to use their facilities.

During the last meeting at SWC Governing Board on June 10, I informed
the Board Members and President of these facts. Last week, I sent them a
request to include a discussion of terminating the contract with
Blackwater in their next meeting agenda (this coming Wednesday the
8th). They have not responded yet. I sent another letter asking them to
terminate the contract with Blackwater since they have other options to
their students. I am attaching those letters and the table that they
provided to the public with the corrections the research revealed (in
green).

This is our moment of need. Ray will not be able to attend this coming
meeting. We need speakers to show up and keep pressing the issue that
they must terminate the contract immediately. They need to send their
students back to the Sheriff's range, which by the way they had used for
the previous twenty years without any problems.

The Sheriff's range is available to them at no cost for the next six
months and afterwards for a fee of $300 per group of 32 students for 4
hours. The Police Academy students only need 14 sessions of 4 hours to
complete their program, so the cost to their students is really minimal,
about $140 for the entire training. What is very clear to me is that
someone at the SWC Police Academy purposely misled the Board to believe
they had no other options but Blackwater. The Board should had known

Today, I spoke with Horacio Rentería from El Latino newspaper who will
try to write an article this week. El Latino runs 80,000 issues and is
read by about 240,000 people, so I hope this puts more pressure on the
Board.

It's that time again: mark it on your calendars:  July 18th:  the San Diego LGBT Pride Parade.

This year the SDCPJ will be marching in solidarity with SAME (the San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality).  The theme this year is: ACTIVISM for EQUALITY: Stonewall 2.0.

The parade starts at 11:00 but we typically meet up around 9:00am on the morning of the parade.  I will be sending another email reminder with the exact location of where to meet up that morning later this week.

Because we are marching with the SAME group this year, we are asking that all signs read something like: "The SDCPJ supports MARRIAGE EQUALITY" or "SDCPJ in solidarity with SAME" or similar.

The San Diego Public Library Screens A SENSELESS DEATH

A Discussion with Local Activist Fernando del Solar Follows the Film

 

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Public Library will host a screening of A Senseless Death.  This new film by Raymonde Provencher tells the little known story of "green card soldiers"—young, non-citizen soldiers and Marines struggling to achieve, the so-called, "American Dream"—who were among the first casualties of the U.S. invasion of Iraq.  The screening will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8 in the 3rd floor auditorium of the Central Library, located at 820 E Street in downtown San Diego.  This free event is open to the public.

 

Among the first fallen were two young Latin Americans--José Antonio Gutierrez from Guatemala and Jesús Suarez del Solar, who was born in Mexico and raised near San Diego.  Both would lose their lives in an unpopular war.  Fernando Suarez del Solar, Jesús' father, would become an outspoken critic of the war and a dedicated activist opposed to the militarization of Latino youth.

 

A discussion with Mr. Suarez will follow the screening of this moving documentary which combines the hot button issues of immigration and war in 21st century America.

Robin Long is scheduled to be release on Thursday, July 9, 2009 from the Naval Consolidated Brig at MCAS Miramar after serving his sentence for resisting deployment to the War in Iraq by deserting to Canada.

The San Diego Chapters of Veterans For Peace, Iraq Veterans Against the War, Military Families Speak Out and the Vietnam Veterans Against the War are holding this “Final Vigil” to call attention to his case and to the plight of all Iraq War Resisters
