Despite what you might hear on the corporate-owned news:

  • Food is needed -- we no longer have a food table, so you'll have to play it by ear.
  • We will not be denied our constitutional right to assemble and speak!
  • Many Teach-ins on Sunday!

  • Note about Alert sent today: The alert sent to email blast list was sent at about noon. Many people were checking their email later, came down to the Civic Center Plaza at maybe 6pm and wondered what all the hoopla was about. The request for the email blast came from the Celly text list (see details below to subscribe.) To make sure we avoid false alarms, our procedure will be to check with at least two other people on the ground. Also, the time should have been in the email to make sure you know when it was sent. This will be corrected in the future!

  • Police are trying to beat us down at the Civic Center Plaza. The following from a post on Facebook:
If you stand under the overhang at the west end of the plaza, they are calling that loitering. We were told when beginning the first teach in/workshop, where we'd always held it when it was raining or threatened to rain, that we were subject to arrest for loitering if we did not move then on order - and that we were subject to immediate arrest for the next 48 hours after the warning if we returned anywhere under the overhang. Furthermore, they will apply that to any occupier. It follows a pattern of increasing harassment and intimidation of the weekend teach ins, that is always paralleled with increased harassment of the 24-7 occupiers. Today they were also harassed for 'loitering' in the earlier morning hours for escaping the rain a little while under the overhang, and then for using umbrellas which were dubbed by the police as 'structures being erected'. The one arrest this morning was among the 24-7 occupiers who had been talking to the police about their new umbrella rule. It occurred exactly as the first teach in/workshop began, which is also a pattern. It is petty intimidation, and we will not back down.

It turns out that the law that is quoted on the sign has an exemption for peaceful political activities. Anyone who takes part in any future teach-ins should print out the information below and show to the police:

§52.80.01 Trespasses upon Privately Operated Business Premises Prohibited

(a) No person shall have the right to use privately operated business premises which are open to the general public for any purpose which is contrary to the functions or services provided thereon without the consent of the owner, operator or agent thereof. It shall be unlawful for any person so using such property to refuse or fail to leave such property upon being requested to leave by the owner, operator or agent thereof.

(b) It shall be unlawful for any person without the permission of the owner, operator or agent of privately operated business premises which are open to the general public to enter upon such premises within forty–eight (48) hours after having been requested by the owner, operator or agent thereof to leave therefrom pursuant to the provisions of subdivision (a).

(c) Exceptions. The provisions of this section shall not apply in any of the following instances:

(1) Where their application results in or is coupled with an act prohibited by the Unruh Civil Rights Act or any other provisions of law relating to prohibited discrimination against any person on account of color, race, religion, sex, creed, ancestry or national origin;

(2) Where their application would result in an interference with or inhibition of peaceful picketing directed toward the business establishment, lawful labor activities, or peaceful political activities;

(3) Where their application results in or is coupled with an act prohibited by Section 365 of the California Penal Code or any other provision of law relating to duties of innkeepers and common carriers;

(4) Where the person who is upon the privately operated business premises which are open to the general public is present under claim or color of legal right. This exception is applicable to situations wherein public officials are present in the course of their official duties and to situations involving disputes wherein the participants have available to them practical and effective civil remedies such as: marital and post–marital disputes; child custody or visitations disputes; disputes regarding title to or rights in legal property; landlord–tenant disputes; disputes between members of the same family or between persons residing upon the property concerned up until the time of the dispute; business–type disputes such as those between partners; debtor–creditor disputes; and instances wherein the person claims a right to be present pursuant to order, decree or process of a court.

  • Hunger Strike -- John Kenney continues his hunger strike, now in day 13. He is requesting that the City come to the table and discuss the right of Occupy San Diego to conduct protests in the form of an encampment. John is now sick and I am starting to worry about his health.

Now police are trying to starve the Occupiers out of Civic Center. They actually stopped a lady and told her she couldn't bring 2 pizzas into Civic Center. She could only bring in what she could consume. A young lady mic checked (yelled/asked what was happening) real quick and the crowd ran up and got some pizza. The young lady then asked them/SDPD to stop making up laws that don't exist and the female cop threatened to arrest her for Public Intoxication.

I think it is a shame that the City Council and the Mayor are using the SDPD to harass and annoy these young people who are only trying to exercise their rights to peaceably protest, under the US Constitution and Bill of Rights. Their right to assembly and their right of free speech has been infringed upon by the SD City Government - all of it and you all should be ashamed of yourselves!

San Diego Labor Council Comes Out in Support of Occupy San Diego

Editor: We have just received this Statement of Support by the San Diego Labor Council for the Occupy San Diego movement and its efforts.

From Lorena Gonzalez, the San Diego and Imperial County Labor Council's Secretary-Treasurer, regarding the "Occupy Wall Street" and "Occupy San Diego" campaigns that we look forward to participating in:

"The San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council, AFL-CIO is proud support the "Occupy Wall Street" and associated "Occupy San Diego" efforts. As a coalition of local unions, we work hard to remind media, elected officials, our members and the general public that the economic crises too many people are facing today were not caused by the third-grade teacher, the grocery clerk, the sanitation worker or the firefighter.

Our economic crisis was caused by the greed on Wallstreet, CEO's whose pay is 300 times that of their average worker and big banks who have caused a foreclosure nightmare for middle and working class Americans.

We will stand with those who seek to bring attention to the real economic problems that regular San Diegans and Americans face."

Official Statement from Occupy Wall Street - this statement was voted on and approved by the general assembly of protesters at Liberty Square: Declaration of the Occupation of New York City on September 29, 2011

As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies.

As one people, united, we acknowledge the reality: that the future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their neighbors; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power. We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments. We have peaceably assembled here, as is our right, to let these facts be known.

They have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure process, despite not having the original mortgage.

They have taken bailouts from taxpayers with impunity, and continue to give Executives exorbitant bonuses.

They have perpetuated inequality and discrimination in the workplace based on age, the color of one's skin, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation.

They have poisoned the food supply through negligence, and undermined the farming system through monopolization.

They have profited off of the torture, confinement, and cruel treatment of countless nonhuman animals, and actively hide these practices.

They have continuously sought to strip employees of the right to negotiate for better pay and safer working conditions.

They have held students hostage with tens of thousands of dollars of debt on education, which is itself a human right.

They have consistently outsourced labor and used that outsourcing as leverage to cut workers' healthcare and pay.

They have influenced the courts to achieve the same rights as people, with none of the culpability or responsibility.

They have spent millions of dollars on legal teams that look for ways to get them out of contracts in regards to health insurance.

They have sold our privacy as a commodity.

They have used the military and police force to prevent freedom of the press.

They have deliberately declined to recall faulty products endangering lives in pursuit of profit.

They determine economic policy, despite the catastrophic failures their policies have produced and continue to produce.

They have donated large sums of money to politicians supposed to be regulating them.

They continue to block alternate forms of energy to keep us dependent on oil.

They continue to block generic forms of medicine that could save people's lives in order to protect investments that have already turned a substantive profit.

They have purposely covered up oil spills, accidents, faulty bookkeeping, and inactive ingredients in pursuit of profit.

They purposefully keep people misinformed and fearful through their control of the media.

They have accepted private contracts to murder prisoners even when presented with serious doubts about their guilt.

They have perpetuated colonialism at home and abroad.

They have participated in the torture and murder of innocent civilians overseas.

They continue to create weapons of mass destruction in order to receive government contracts.*

To the people of the world,

We, the New York City General Assembly occupying Wall Street in Liberty Square, urge you to assert your power.

Exercise your right to peaceably assemble; occupy public space; create a process to address the problems we face, and generate solutions accessible to everyone.

To all communities that take action and form groups in the spirit of direct democracy, we offer support, documentation, and all of the resources at our disposal.

Join us and make your voices heard!

[SDCPJ] OK - Now its time

It should be clear, crystal clear to everyone that there are serious, systemic problems in our nation.  This isn't partisan politics; not Conservative vs. Liberal, not Democratic vs. Republican, or any labels work:  WE ARE ALL suffering, except for perhaps some VERY few who are actually
 
  • Continuing wars sucking the life out of our economy, not to mention, continuing lives lost.
  • Continuing government deficits and "government poverty" while corporate greed runs rampant. 
  • YEARS of declining investment in our physical and social infrastructure, to where not only bridges, but schooling and healthcare are about to collapse. 
  • The middle class under seige, declining, homes underwater, either no work or wages so low that poverty rates, and real households in poverty, are increasing.

These and more, much more.  YOU KNOW all this. 

 

Some have the guts and voice to speak out.  Some have been speaking out for quite some time.  More are joining now: witness the Occupy Wall Street movement.

 

In San Diego, you can join. On Oct. 15, Saturday. AND ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SHOW UP!  Easy.  See the below; choose any one of four segments, or any/all of them.  BUT ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS SHOW UP!

Citizens Join Occupy Wall Street at Civic Center Plaza, San Diego
Occupy San Diego Seeks Economic and Social Justice

SAN DIEGO (Oct. 3, 2011) - Standing in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street NYC, hundreds of San Diego
citizens will peacefully occupy the Civic Center Plaza in downtown San Diego, adjacent to San Diego City
Hall (1200 3rd Ave.), starting on October 7, 2011. This nonviolent occupation is in protest of the global
financial corruption currently invading politics, media and corporations, exemplified by the recent financial
industry meltdown and following recession.

The occupation will continue indefinitely until a list of demands in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street NYC
are met by all levels of government, including the City and County of San Diego, the state of California, the
Federal Government, and by private and public banks and corporations.

The long term and overnight occupation will include marches, sit-ins, educational programs, practice of the
democratic process, and General Assembly meetings wherein solutions to overlapping issues are identified, to
name a few. This diversified group makes decisions via consensus.

Participants are requested to meet at Children's Park (1st Ave. and Island Ave.), by 3:30 p.m. on Friday,
October 7. At 4:00 p.m., the group will march to Civic Center Plaza. Children's Park is adjacent to the
Convention Center Trolley Station and is two blocks south of Nordstrom Horton Plaza.

"The Occupy Wall Street movement is sweeping across the country. People from all walks of life, political
persuasions and occupations are joining together to demand that our economic system become more just,"
said Ray Lutz of Occupy San Diego. "Join our movement. With you, we can bring about change."

We, the American citizens, must claim our country and put ourselves on the line for peace and justice. It is
time for us to discover both who we -- the other 99% -- are and what we believe and want. Now is the time for
us to act. Unless we do, we are nothing. When we do, our nation will be restored.

Occupy San Diego is reaching out to existing political groups, active military personnel, veterans, activist
groups and labor unions in the San Diego community to participate in the occupation. The United
Steelworkers Union (USW, 1.2 million members), the Laborers' International Union of America (LIUNA,
500,000 members), the Transport Workers Union (over 200,000 members), and National Nurses United
(NNU, 170,000 members) - have already announced their support for the Occupy Wall Street protests.

The top 1% control nearly a majority of the wealth in this country*. This lopsided distribution of wealth,
coupled with outsourcing of jobs, bailouts, secret loans, subsidies, and profiteering in the financial sector have
resulted in massive foreclosures, retirement and investment fiduciary failure, job losses, and homelessness.

people what already belongs to the people – our country.

FOR PARTICIPANTS

Bring what you need to LIVE -- or nothing, we will take care of each other! Some suggestions:
1. Pack lightly, keep valuables to a minimum, keep compact backpack/tote with you most of the time.
2. Wear layered clothing, prepare for possible rain or hot sun (hats, sunglasses, etc.)
3. Feel free to bring food, water and supplies to share!
4. Tents, compact bedroll / sleeping bag, pad/air mattress, blankets

Participants are advised to check the occupysandiego.org web site for further details, including legal
advice and instructions and what to expect and how to behave if arrested.

Transportation:

Occupying participants are advised to get rides to the site or use the Coaster or trolley and park in free
station parking lots outside the downtown area.

 -- We're sending an announcement mailer to the full postal list. Come help this Tues 10/4 & Wed 10/5, from 10-1pm

Meeting Room clean-up (Friends Center)
-- In preparation for the peace crane unveiling event, we need the meeting room cleaned out. This will be physical, varying from light work to heavy lifting. We need lots of loose things organized (perhaps sitting work), the shed organized, and then everything taken out of the meeting room and put in the shed storage. We hope folks will help out this Wed 10/5 and Thur 10/6 from 9-1pm.

We are seeking a few more volunteers to help out with the Peace Crane Unveiling fundraiser event. We have various needs, so anyone interested may contact us for more details.

Most of the organizing for Occupy San Diego is happening via Facebook and at General Assembly meetings.

Here's what's planned: Civic Center/City Hall 202 C Street (Downtown San Diego; Beginning at 4:30 pm on October 7th, We the people, "The 99%" will be occupying the Civic Center indefinitely until a list of our demands, which will be in sync with "Occupy Wall Street's" demands, are met.

In preparation, General Assembly planning meetings are being held every day from 6-9 p.m. at 1st Avenue and Harbor Drive.

Statement: To the 99%: We are many, and they are few. Why should we have to work, and suffer, and be poisoned with inadequate water, food, and air, while the ruling elite party it up on our dime?

It is time to put aside our differences, including the progressive issues we are working on, and join forces. Together we will force change.

100 core activists showed up to our first planning meeting. We continue to meet daily, and have hundreds of supporters already. We need your help. Join the occupation today! Bring your issues on the 7th. We will have plenty of time to enlighten one another.

We ask that you set aside your personal agendas if you wish to attend our General Assembly meetings where we are organizing the occupation.

At some point you should be trained by our group prior to joining the occupation.
