Many of you are aware of my involvement with the OBRag.org blog.  Mostly I write about local politics for them.  

Over the past two weeks, we have found ourselves at the center of a controversy about the homeless situation in Ocean Beach.  For background, I suggest this article: http://obrag.org/?p=21614. Our position on this issue has not been a popular one: we say that selling merchandise that denigrates the homeless is morally wrong. I understand that this issue is complex and emotional.

What I'm writing you about is the undertone of hatred and violence that has been directed our way recently.  Today (4-6pm) we are picketing the store (The Black, 5017 Newport Ave) at the center of the controversy. We are asking people to sign petitions (http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/we-say-no-to-please-dont-feed-our-bums) and demanding that the store donate a share of its profits from this merchandise to groups that help the homeless.  Based on the hate mail and phone calls that we've received, we have reason to suspect (see the story above) that we'll be physically attacked today.  We're going anyway. It's a matter of principle.

All I'm asking of you is that you keep us in your prayers; if you can stop by with a camera or post a supportive comment on the blog it would be much appreciated. 

It's a lot different doing this sort of thing when you're 60 and have a family than it was when I was 20 and had minimal responsibilities. Your support would be much appreciated.

We will announce the formation of an interfaith council of the Churches in OB to help with the homeless issue some time over the next couple of days.

[SDCPJ] There's still time to stop the attack on public schools

The latest attack on public education is gaining momentum in the Legislature, but there's still time to make your voice heard and take a stand for schools. Check out the campaign below to learn more about what's at stake for California kids.

As if our schools didn't have it tough enough these days, a state Assembly member has launched yet another attack against public education.

Click here to take action to stop a dangerous bill that puts up new red tape and would cost our public schools $50 million dollars in vital funding.

As the legislative session heats up, Assemblymember Brownley has wasted no time launching an assault on innovative public schools.  Brownley's bill, AB 1950, pulls educators away from kids to spend more time filling out bureaucratic paper work.  It's no secret that kids benefit when they spend more time with our great teachers, not less. Yet AB 1950 asks teachers to jump through new hoops to ensure their school will be able to keep its doors open.

Send a letter to make it clear that teachers should spend their time helping kids, not paper pushing.

Think that's bad enough? AB 1950 goes further and creates a new system of quotas that will hurt low-income and minority kids across California.  Should low-income kids be denied seats in innovative public charter schools to make room for their wealthier peers? Apparently Assemblymember Brownley thinks so.

And to make matters worse, this ill-advised proposal breaks rules in a federal grant program that will cost California public schools vital funding. At the same time, it would immediately stifle the growth of high quality schools in low-income communities and arbitrarily modify public charter school waiting lists, potentially separating siblings trying to access a quality public education.

Dear [Legislator's Name Here],

Please vote no on AB 1950, legislation that ties up educators with new red tape, takes money out of the classroom and would cost California public schools $50 million dollars in vital funding.

At a time when our public schools are strapped for staff and resources, we ought to be asking them to fill out less paper work, not more.  AB 1950 pulls teachers out of the classroom and away from kids to jump through new bureaucratic hoops.  And while creating these new rules and regulations, the bill actually eliminates a critical oversight and appeal process for innovative public charter schools.

But AB 1950 doesn't stop there.  The bill creates a system that puts arbitrary quotas above giving all kids a fair shot at a quality education. Under current law, public charter schools take all kids who sign up. If there are not enough spots in a school, kids enter a random, non-biased drawing for admission.  And under this system, California's most successful public charter schools serve primarily low-income and minority students.  AB 1950 introduces quotas that shut this door to opportunity for thousands of African American and Latino kids across California.  Thousands of low-income students will be pulled out of innovative public schools to make room for their more affluent peers.

And to make matters worse, this breaks the rules in a federal grant program, and as a result, would cost California public schools critical funding. Beyond that, the bill would immediately stifle the growth of high quality schools in low-income communities and arbitrarily modify waiting lists, potentially separating siblings trying to access a quality public education.

I urge you to vote no on AB 1950. Our teachers need to spend every minute possible with kids and our schools can't afford to lose another dollar of critical funding.

Hands of Peace is a San Diego organization, affiliated with the Alternatives to Violence Project USA.

Alternatives to Violence Project a non-profit/non-denominational 501(3)(c) organization

WHAT: A fun, hands-on, experiential workshop – no lectures! The activities focus on building communication skills and a sense of trust and community within the group. The goals include learning behaviors that reduce the level of conflicts rather than escalating or avoiding them.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: The workshop can be taken purely for personal growth or to determine if such a workshop might benefit your work or community team. Also this workshop is the first step of training to become a facilitator of Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) workshops in the prison system or community. You may have heard me say that I am a nonviolence training junkie!  And if you are trying to practice being more nonviolence more of the time in your life I do suggest taking as many difference nonviolence trainings as possible - you will get something different from each training and increase the likelihood of responding (with nonviolence) rather than reacting (out of anger, frustration, fear, etc.)

 

AVP Training was developed by the Quakers more than 30 years and includes community training as well as a program in prisons.  I recently attended AVP Basic Training inside Donovan State Prison and felt it was the most powerful nonviolence training I have ever participated in (as facilitator or participant).

MAS Freedom San Diego, The Free Palestine Alliance, ANSWER Coalition, and other organizations and individuals are calling for a national days of action against Israel on Friday June 4th and Saturday June 5th  to denounce the Israeli military massacre of human rights activists on a Gaza aid convoy. At least 9 international activists were killed by Israel , with dozens injured. The death toll may rise.

The attack on the Freedom Flotilla is a crime against humanity. The Gaza aid convoy, made up of 6 ships bringing medical, construction and school supplies to besieged Palestinians in Gaza , was attacked in international waters by 14 Israeli ships. Heavily armed Israeli commandos dropped onto the ships from helicopters and opened fire on the activists.

Gaza has been blockaded by Israel since 2007 with full backing by the U.S. government. The blockade is a brutal form of collective punishment aimed at strangling the Palestinian people.

Come out Friday to protest this outrage and to demand an end to the siege of Gaza!!!

Dear Friends:

I attended the march and rally against SB 1070 in Phoenix on Saturday, and a meeting of national Latino leaders (Latino Congreso) on Sunday. This issue is not going away. The state of Arizona has awakened a sleeping giant! If Arizona gets away with this, other right-wingers will be emboldened to take similar repressive measures in other states and localities. On the other hand, if we put up enough resistance other states will think twice.

One Latino leader put this scapegoating in the context of the huge transfer of wealth which has taken place in the past few years. Working people have lost jobs, home equity, the value of pensions and investments, etc. - while the top 1% have become far richer. People are confused, fearful, and looking for someone to blame. Their situation is getting worse at the same time as demographics are changing and their communities are getting more colorful. "Illegals" are an easy scapegoat - easier than blaming the system they pay lip service to loving even as it screws them time and again. (If you haven't seen Capitalism, A Love Story, please do so ASAP)

In the meantime there are two actions this weekend which deserve your support. A flyer for each is attached. On Friday June 4 at 3:30pm we'll protest at Brian Bilbray's Solana Beach office. In supporting SB 1070 he claimed he can tell legals from illegals by their clothing, specifically their shoes. This protest will seek to save the SOLE of Congressman Bilbray.

On Sunday June 6 at 3pm, the San Diego Organizing Project and Faith Works will join the PICO national network which will hold rallies for immigration reform in five cities. The San Diego rally will be at 3pm. The details are in the flyer. This will be a faith-based event consisting of clergy and lay people from many denominations and faith traditions.

Please consider writing letters to the editor on this important issue. On May 22 some of us saw the film 9500 Liberty which showed that Arizona-style repression didn't work in Prince William County, Virginia. You can see some of this documentary at 9500Liberty.com
