Ali Abunimah is a Palestinian author and co-founder of the Electronic Intifada. It's the 5th anniversary of the Living Wage Ordinance and Michelle Shocked is coming to town to help celebrate!  On Tuesday, April 13th, 2010 at 12PM (Noon), come join the Center on Policy Initiatives and the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice at a commemoration concert in the Civic Center Plaza.  The Living Wage Ordinance, enacted in 2005, has improved the lives of more than a thousand workers who provide such services as cleaning our libraries, maintaining our parks, and guarding our water plants. Our communities are stronger because families have money to pay their bills and consumer dollars are reinvested in the local economy.  Singer-songwriter Michelle Shocked is a natural ally to the Living Wage. Her musical tradition is rooted in the lives of working people and her current "American Idle" tour shines a spotlight on workers by collecting songs about the difficulties of finding jobs.  Shocked will share the stage with local folk-rockers the ZenKeys Cooperative. The jurors unanimously determined that I acted lawfully and in accordance with state law when it came to all the charges against me; sales, possession, transportation and possession of concentrated cannabis. They also had a thing or two to say about the D.A.'s investigation and prosecution in this case. After the verdict was read, two jurors met me outside the courtroom and said, "Eugene, we all believed in you, you are a good man." Days after the trial, I received an e-mail from another juror in my case, a part of which reads, "This was the most ridiculous thing that I have ever seen! Shame on the SDPD! The reason that we decided in your favor was because the prosecutor just didn't prove her case (she was so annoying), and the police work on your case was nothing but shoddy. I just want to let you know that I am so sorry that you had to go through this nightmare." Walter March 28, 2010 What impact do you think it has on your personal quality of life when no one speaks for the poor in our government, particularly in San Diego County? A lot more than you might realize! Consider affordable housing... In San Diego County, where our cost of living far exceeds the national average while our wages are lower then the national average, most of us, even those who do not consider themselves poor, have to spend a disproportionate amount of our earnings on housing. As a result, finding a place to live that is affordable is a major issue for many hard working San Diegans. But the county is far behind in assuring sufficient affordable housing in our county and as a result we are seeing more and more people living on the streets and in our canyons. Many families are just getting by with two incomes and are only a job loss or illness away from falling into poverty. Our adult kids, who are in debt up to their eyeballs for their college education, are living at home, even if they are married and have their own children, because high housing costs make it impossible for most young people just starting out to have their own place. And when there is no family to fall back on, hard-working people who don't earn enough to pay for housing, or have overwhelming health care bills or have lost their homes and their credit, end up living on the street. These people are caring for your children, preparing your food in restaurants, and interacting with you at work. There is no magic disease shield separating the housed from those people who are huddled in alleys and parking lots. Homelessness poses a serious health risk for all of us. Because some of the homeless are suffering with mental illness and addictions, it's only natural not to feel safe when we see so many homeless people in our neighborhoods. Clearly this growing problem is also hurting local businesses, restaurants and tourism, not to mention our personal sense of justice and compassion.   Imagine a different San Diego, where everyone has a place to live - it's possible and it takes someone who understands that when some of us are poor, in some way everyone suffers. City report shows workers, employers and City benefit from 2005 law Five years ago, David Parkes worked as a security guard at a San Diego water plant and lived on the brink of medical bankruptcy.  The Living Wage Ordinance was an immediate success for him, bringing health coverage to get his kidney disease under control. This week, a City of San Diego report confirms that the Living Wage Ordinance has worked well for hundreds of local workers and also for employers and city taxpayers.  On April 12, 2005, the City Council voted to approve the Living Wage Ordinance, requiring above-poverty pay and benefits for workers performing city services. The measurable human impact is dramatic: Almost 1,000 local workers for city contractors in services like landscaping, janitorial services, security and maintenance now earn the Living Wage, which is $27,456 a year for a full-time job.  Compared to $16,640 a year on minimum wage, that's enough difference to move a family from below poverty to self-sufficiency. Hundreds of those workers now receive health coverage through their employers, and the rest receive $2 an hour toward buying their own coverage. The report also documents benefits for businesses and the city: Nearly half of the employers required to pay the Living Wage self-reported that it has improved the quality of their company's services for the city.  Almost half of employers also say it has reduced absenteeism or turnover. On the historic day of the Council's vote five years ago, more than 600 workers and supporters stood at a rally in Civic Center Plaza in support of the landmark ordinance.  The rally and powerful testimony to the Council culminated years of work by CPI, faith leaders and many community organizations on behalf of the low-wage workers. The City's own report, presented yesterday, shows that the Living Wage Ordinance, as intended, "advances the interests of the City as a whole by creating jobs that keep workers and their families out of poverty." Left Hook By Walter Davis   1 April 2010   Eugene Davidovich Acquitted: Wasteful and Mean Policies of the Right   Eugene Davidovich was acquitted last month of all charges along with most of the other citizens arrested in Operation Green RX. As reported, only one citizen, Donna Lambert remains within the clutches of the District Attorney. Operation Green RX was a misguided arrest sweep of people authorized to use medical marijuana. It has now become a national embarrassment to our local government.   With schools closing and teachers being laid off due to budget constraints, it is amazing that money is being wasted on prosecuting law abiding citizens. Eugene Davidovich has lost his job and filed bankruptcy due to the malicious actions of our District Attorney. One can observe similar actions in the Jovan Jackson case. On a national level, billions of dollars are being spent on this war on drugs that simply is not working. It is warfare on the American people and the American family.   Conservative thinking appears to justify incarceration and warfare as the most viable solutions to problems.   Conservative thinking supports locking people up, not giving them treatment, job training and hope to assuage poverty. The cost of such programs would be less than the incarceration programs and be much more productive for our society.   Conservative thinking opposes the development of symbiotic energy systems such as solar, wind, geothermal and wave and supports more oil well drilling.   Conservative thinking opposes peace and supports more warfare to wrest away the natural resources of others instead of modernizing our own energy infrastructure. Spend billions on war then say there is no money for supporting our society.   The opposition to universal health care is another indication of wasteful and mean policies that would allow millions of American citizens to go without medical care. Save the embryos from death in abortions but let children go hungry and without hope?   With the health care debate won, higher order thinking people are making the antiquated conservative thinking a thing of the past. Damaging winds are approaching the conservatives. The divisive Tea Party maniacs are fielding their own candidates against Republicans which is better than Ross Perot's affect on 1990's elections for the Democrats. Donor wells are drying up due to Michael Steele's Bondage-gate. As the populace becomes more educated about the fallacy of conservative thinking, we are seeing a rebirth of intellectualism and abandonment of policies that generate war and Eugene Davidoviches, Jovan Jacksons and Donna Lamberts.

COLUMN Assessing START follow-on BY PAVEL PODVIG After missing more than a few deadlines and achieving several so-called significant breakthroughs, the United States and Russia finally have reached an agreement on a new arms control treaty. It will be signed in Prague on April 8, almost a year to the day U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev agreed to begin treaty negotiations and Obama announced, also in Prague, his commitment to a nuclear-weapon-free world. So, was the treaty worth the wait? As a disarmament measure, it will be a very modest step. The treaty will set a ceiling of 1,550 deployed nuclear warheads--technically a reduction of more than 30 percent from the current levels--but almost all of the reductions will be accomplished by changing the way the warheads are counted. That means most of the warheads will still be in the U.S. and Russian active arsenals. Numbers alone, however, don't tell the whole story. In fact, they aren't all that important.
