Breaking News

This afternoon the U.S. Senate, during their consideration of the economic recovery bill, approved an egregious amendment offered by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) that stated “None of the amounts appropriated or otherwise made available by this Act may be used for any casino or other gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, swimming pool, stadium, community park, museum, theater, art center, and highway beautification project.” Unfortunately, the amendment passed by a wide vote margin of 73-24, and surprisingly included support from many high profile Senators including Chuck Schumer of New York, Dianne Feinstein of California, Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, and several other Democratic and Republican Senators.

If the Coburn amendment language is included in the final conference version of this legislation, many arts groups will be prevented from receiving economic recovery funds from any portion of this specific stimulus bill. It is clear that there is still much work to be done in the Senate and in the media about the role that nonprofit arts organizations and artists play in the nation’s economy and workforce.

Plan of Action

Arts advocates need to quickly contact Senators who voted for the Coburn Amendment and express your extreme disappointment with their vote. We need these Senators to know that their vote would detrimentally impact nonprofit arts organizations and the jobs they support in their state. We have crafted a customized message for you to send to your Senators based on their vote on the Coburn Amendment. The correct letter, customized to each of your Senators will appear when you enter your zip code. If your Senator voted for this funding prohibition, you can send them a message expressing your disappointment and ask them to work to delete this language in the final conference bill with the House. If your Senator voted against the Coburn Amendment, you can thank them for their support of the arts.

We need as many news articles as possible this coming week to publish stories about the economic impact of the nonprofit arts industry and how the recession is negatively affecting arts groups across the country. Please click here to customize an opinion editorial to your local media. We have provided you with easy-to-use talking points.

Next week, Americans for the Arts will be sending you another action alert that targets the White House and the soon-to-be-named Senators and Representatives who will serve as conferees to the final economic recovery bill. Please be prepared to take action on this alert as well.

San Diego Board of Supervisors to Cut Services While Continuing to Spend On Pet Projects

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors have long come under fire for their hardlined approach of outsourcing public services, not doing enough to increase access to vital services like food stamps to needy families, and making few concessions at the bargaining table.

 

Now the Board will consider its first round of layoffs, which threaten vital service like protection of our elderly from domestic abuse. Although the Supervisors consider themselves fiscally reponsible, they continue to spend millions of dollars on frivolous expenditures like "doggie parades" and expensive business trips.

 

Members of SEIU Local 221, along with concerned members of the community, are coming together to propose a humane and responsible alternative to this painful loss of services.

 

Come and support this proposal and tell the Board of Supervisors that service preservation is needed now more than ever!

The State of California is facing a $42 Billion Budget Deficit, threatening the prosperity upon which our Golden State was built.

Governor Schwarzenegger is proposing painful cuts to vital programs that will hurt the neediest Californians, including slashing of services for our aging population, the working poor, people with developmental disabilities, low and moderate income families, and children.

 

All the while, the Bush Administration and Congress wrote blank checks to banks that have since been used to reward corporate executives with $18 Billion in bonuses.

 

It's time for the people's bailout! Come and speak out against the Governor's proposed cuts and call upon the Obama Administration to provide desperately needed federal stimulus as an alternative to the Governor's proposal.

	Hava Keller Israeli peace activist and founder of Women's Organization for Political Prisoners -- established with the objective of helping female political prisoners who struggle against Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory. She was also a soldier who served during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
	Rashid Khalidi Director of the Middle East Institute - School of International and Public Affairs/Columbia University. Author of "Palestinian Identity: The Construction of Modern National Consciousness" and "British Policy towards Syria and Palestine" -- among other books.
	Peretz Kidron Spokesperson of Yush Gvul -- an Israeli peace group campaigning against the occupation by backing soldiers who refuse duties of a repressive or aggressive nature. He is an Israeli peace activist, freelance journalist, and author of "Refusenik!: Israel's Soldiers of Conscience."

	Rabbi Rebecca Lillian The spiritual leader of Temple Beth Or in Miami, FL. She is currently on the Rabbinic Cabinet of the Jewish Alliance for Justice and Peace.
	Roger Normand Roger Normand is co-founder and executive director of the Center for Economic and Social Rights in New York, and has led recent human rights missions to Iraq, Afghanistan and Israel and Palestine.
	Allegra Pacheco She is an American-born Israeli attorney who works on the front lines and defends Palestinians in Israeli courts against house demolitions, land confiscations, torture, and illegal detentions. Her litigation won an Israeli Supreme Court banning certain torture methods in Israel.
	Ilan Pappe An Israeli-born lecturer from Haifa University. Through his life experiences and scholarly research he came to challenge the common historical narrative of his state. He is one of the so called 'New Historians' who in the late 1980s exposed the 1948 ethnic cleansing Israel carried out in Palestine.
	Dr. Iyad Sarraj A prominent Palestinian psychiatrist who has undergone extensive research about the mental health condition of children living and Gaza. He is the director of the Gaza Community Mental Health Program.
	Yael Stien Research director of B'Tselem, an Israeli human rights group -- established in 1989 by a group of prominent academics, attorneys, journalists, and Knesset members. It endeavors to document and educate the Israeli public and policymakers about human rights violations in the Occupied Territories.
	Gila Svirsky An Israeli peace campaigner for more than 15 years, lives in Jerusalem. She is a founding member of the Coalition of Women for a Just Peace, a grouping of eight Israeli and Palestinian women's peace organizations.
	Ambassador Edward Walker His diplomatic career includes positions as US Ambassador to Israel (1997-1999), the Arab Republic of Egypt (1994-1997), and the United Arab Emirates (1989-1992). He also served as Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs under the Clinton administration.
	Alison Weir American freelance journalist who has traveled independently throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip. She founded If Americans Knew and frequently lectures throughout the United States to misinformed and uninformed citizens on one of the most significant issues affecting them today.
