AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL HOSTS
"A CALL FOR INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE" HUMAN RIGHTS WALK
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2008

The 20th Anniversary San Diego Candlelight Walk for Human Rights hosted
by the North County Chapter of Amnesty
International will be held on Sunday, October 19, 2008 at the outdoor
amphitheater and pier in Oceanside at 5:30pm.
The event is free to the public. This year's theme, "A Call for
International Justice" will give participants an opportunity
to be a voice for victims of human rights abuses, to celebrate the 60th
Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights, and to call on elected officials to support the International
Criminal Court.

A brief reception – with refreshments, materials, and the live music of
Akayaa & Bolga Zohdoomah will be followed by a
program of courageous speakers.

The featured guest speaker will be Ms Rebiya Kadeer, the chapter's
former "adopted" prisoner of conscience from the
Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region in China. Kathy Ford, the founder and
coordinator of the North County Amnesty
International group said, "This brave woman, a women's activist, was on
her way to meet with a U.S. Congressional Team
when she was arrested in their hotel lobby. She was sentenced in 2000 to
eight years in prison. For many years while she
suffered harsh prison conditions in China, hundreds here in Oceanside
carried her name and image out the pier,
hundreds more at our walks signed petitions or sent postcards calling
for her freedom, and this year in Oceanside she will
stand before us, as a free woman." Since her early release, having
served 5 ½ years of her sentence, Ms Kadeer has said:
"I don't believe that I would be alive today without the support of
Amnesty International."

Other presenters will be Peter Schey, the Founder, President and
Executive Director of the Center for Human Rights and
Constitutional Law Foundation who will speak about the Reconciliation
Process in South Africa, and Ms. Brigitte Suhr,
the Director of Regional Programs at the Coalition for the International
Criminal Court who leads the advocacy
campaign for global support for the International Criminal Court.

The North County Chapter's 2008 Digna Ochoa Human Rights Defender Award
will be presented to the Joan B. Kroc
Institute for Peace and Justice in San Diego with Dee Aker, their
interim Director, accepting the award.
Designed as an evening of hope and inspiration, the walk will culminate
with the symbolic candlelight "Freedom Walk"
on the Oceanside Pier. Participants will be invited to take up the cause
of another person who needs a voice and action, or
one of the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, or the
cause of the International Criminal Court.

Today - Monday, October 13th Join the Nationwide Call-in Day to St. Paul officials to demand that all charges against RNC protestors be dropped! During the Republican National Convention in early September, St. Paul was a police state complete with steel fences, protest pens, military- style checkpoints, and thousands of riot police. Before protests even began, police raided homes and activist gathering spaces, detaining hundreds of people and confiscating people's belongings. Throughout the RNC, the police systematically violated the rights of thousands, violently attacked protesters, and arrested over 800 people. St. Paul city officials were complicit in enabling this scenario, and now they need to hear from you! Please CALL and/or EMAIL the following people TODAY - MONDAY, OCT 13: 1. St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman (651) 266-8510, mayor@ci.stpaul.mn.us Coleman did nothing to prevent the militarization of St. Paul and the numerous violations of peoples' rights that occurred there. After the RNC, he called the actions of police "nothing short of heroic." Call him to demand a real, independent investigation that holds police accountable! 2. Ramsey County Attorney Susan Gaertner (651) 266-3222, RCA@co.ramsey.mn.us Gaertner is responsible for prosecuting all felony cases, including the RNC 8 who are facing 7+ years on trumped up charges of "terrorism," under the first ever use of the Minnesota version of the Patriot Act. Gaertner plans to run for governor in 2010. Call her to demand an end to the repression of activists and an immediate dismissal of all charges. 3. St. Paul City Attorney John Choi (651) 266-8710, Choi@ci.stpaul.mn.us Choi is in charge of prosecuting all misdemeanor RNC-related cases. He referred to RNC protesters as "outsiders who wanted to create mayhem." The vast majority of those arrested were Twin Cities residents who were protesting the agenda of the real criminals gathered in the Xcel Center, site of the RNC. Call Choi to defend our right to protest without permits and demand that all charges be dropped! *For this kind of pressure campaign to be successful, we need A LOT OF PEOPLE TO PARTICIPATE. It's being organized mostly by youth of color from working-class communities that are exploited for cannon fodder. Students are working in their schools to challenge recruiters and the JROTC programs 

in a struggle to get an academic, college bound education instead of military training.  

They will be testifying and protesting at the Oct. 14th School board meeting for San Diego Unified.

Let's support them by leafleting the week of Oct. 20th &/or the week of Oct. 27th in front of schools in San Diego County.  

We'd like to go to an East County school, a North County school, South Bay &/ Central San Diego.

Who You Callin' a Maverick?

There's that word again: maverick. In Thursday's vice-presidential debate, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, the Republican candidate, used it to describe herself and her running mate, Senator John McCain, no fewer than six times, at one point calling him "the consummate maverick."

But to those who know the history of the word, applying it to Mr. McCain is a bit of a stretch — and to one Texas family in particular it is even a bit offensive.

"I'm just enraged that McCain calls himself a maverick," said Terrellita Maverick, 82, a San Antonio native who proudly carries the name of a family that has been known for its progressive politics since the 1600s, when an early ancestor in Boston got into trouble with the law over his agitation for the rights of indentured servants.

 

In the 1800s, Samuel Augustus Maverick went to Texas and became known for not branding his cattle. He was more interested in keeping track of the land he owned than the livestock on it, Ms. Maverick said; unbranded cattle, then, were called "Maverick's." The name came to mean anyone who didn't bear another's brand.

 

Sam Maverick's grandson, Fontaine Maury Maverick, was a two-term congressman and a mayor of San Antonio who lost his mayoral re-election bid when conservatives labeled him a Communist. He served in the Roosevelt administration on the Smaller War Plants Corporation and is best known for another coinage. He came up with the term "gobbledygook" in frustration at the convoluted language of bureaucrats.

 

This Maverick's son, Maury Jr., was a firebrand civil libertarian and lawyer who defended draft resisters, atheists and others scorned by society. He served in the Texas Legislature during the McCarthy era and wrote fiery columns for The San Antonio Express-News. His final column, published on Feb. 2, 2003, just after he died at 82, was an attack on the coming war in Iraq.

 

Terrellita Maverick, sister of Maury Jr., is a member emeritus of the board of the San Antonio chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas.

Considering the family's long history of association with liberalism and progressive ideals, it should come as no surprise that Ms. Maverick insists that John McCain, who has voted so often with his party, "is in no way a maverick, in uppercase or lowercase."

 

"It's just incredible — the nerve! — to suggest that he's not part of that Republican herd. Every time we hear it, all my children and I and all my family shrink a little and say, 'Oh, my God, he said it again.' "

"He's a Republican," she said. "He's branded."
