MEDIA ADVISORY

(SAN DIEGO, CA, 8/16/17) – On Thursday, August 17, the San Diego office of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-SD) will join the San Diego Human Relations Commission and public officials -- including representatives from the State Senate, Assembly and the mayor's office – to present the proclamation recognizing "Muslim Appreciation and Awareness Month."

Last year, Assemblymember Bill Quirk (D-Hayward) introduced House Resolution 59 to proclaim the month of August as "Muslim Appreciation and Awareness Month" and was joined by 61 co-authors. He will be reintroducing the resolution with HR 43 on August 21 with Assemblymembers Ash Kalra and Kansen Chu as co-sponsors.

WHAT: Presentation of Proclamation to Recognize August 2017 as Muslim Appreciation and Awareness Month
WHEN: August 17, 10 a.m.
WHERE: San Diego Central Library, Shiley Suite, 330 Park Blvd. 9th Floor, San Diego, California 92101
CONTACT: CAIR-SD Executive Director Hanif Mohebi, 858-774-9991, hmohebi@cair.com

"I am proud to celebrate the first ever Muslim Appreciation and Awareness Month by honoring generations of Muslim Americans for their many social, cultural, and economic contributions to California," said Assemblymember Quirk.

"We're honored to have friends that acknowledge the important contributions of the American Muslim community, particularly given the current political climate," said CAIR San Diego's Executive Director Hanif Mohebi.

CAIR-CA is a chapter of CAIR, America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
