[SDCPJ] Fwd: [prcsd] Support the Sanctuary City Movement, 10am, Valentine's Day, San Diego City Council Meeting

Subject: [prcsd] Support the Sanctuary City Movement, 10am, Valentine's Day, San Diego City Council Meeting

Dear supporters of peace and justice,

The Peace Resource Center stands with the local human rights communities to ask the City Council of San Diego to sign onto the legal support for Washington State in its challenge of the federal government's unconstitutional ban on the rights of people to travel across borders based on their religious affiliation.

What you can do too in support-  an open letter from our friends at SDOP.

sincerely
Anne

Dear SDOP Leaders and Clergy,

Join us as we Stand Together!

The City of San Diego will consider signing on to an amicus curie brief concerning the Muslim ban that Washington State is challenging this coming Tuesday.   The City of Chicago has asked our city to join in.  San Diego has a significant stake in the outcome of this action, as this issue impacts our community members. San Diego has the fourth largest population of people from countries banned under the current Executive Order, with almost 39,000 potentially affected people living here in the County.

You can help support this effort in the following ways:

1) Show up and stand with us this Valentine's Day, 02/14/2017 with your community members, families, neighbors, and friends at 10:00am at the San Diego City Council (202 C Street, San Diego, CA 92101).  The City Council will enter into a closed session at 11:00am to discuss whether or not the City of San Diego will join in on this brief. We want them to hear from community members that now is the time for us to speak up as silence would be a betrayal of the values we stand for. Please arrive early!!

2) Call and email your council-member(s) to let them know you support San Diego signing on to this brief. Many big-city mayors across the country are speaking out against the executive order. The mayors of Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle, among others, have issued statements and joined protests to denounce the order and to support immigrants and refugees.  It is time for San Diego to take a stand. Go to SanDiego.gov to get your council-member's phone number and/or email.

3) Add your name or your church's name to the sign-on letter. Click here for a copy of the letter. We will deliver this letter to the City Council and the Mayor on Tuesday Morning and hope to have a diverse representation of organizations and businesses represented.  To add your name to the letter, please reply to this email and cc Christie Hill, Senior Policy Strategist with ACLU at chill@aclusandiego.org.

"The subtle and deadly change of heart that might occur in you would be involved with the realization that a civilization is not destroyed by wicked people; it is not necessary that people be wicked but only that they be spineless." James Baldwin
