Food and Supply Drive Now through January 9
The Animal Defense Team (ADT) of Ground Zero Players is gathering donations for homeless pets (primarily dogs) and their human companions who are living on the streets of downtown San Diego. Can you help?
Suggestions:
For dogs: food, bedding, collars, leashes, treats, dog sweaters
For humans: socks, nonperishable food, water, toiletries, blankets, sleeping bags, tarps, coats, raingear, gloves, hats
The SD Police Department has conducted recent raids of downtown homeless, allegedly seizing personal possessions including treasured family photos, prescription medicines and blankets. As of now, the ACLU has put their lawsuit against the city for this action on hold, pending talks with the City Attorney. The city has maintained they will not destroy the property until after negotiations with the ACLU.
It is winter. It is raining. People and animals are suffering as you read this.
The National Coalition on the Homeless says 5 - 20% of homeless people have pets, mostly dogs. Some owned them before they became homeless. Others have adopted strays along the way. The vast majority of shelters do not accept pets, which forces folks to choose between shelter and abandoning their dogs. With the current economy, we can all imagine a time when this could be any one of us. What would you do?
Together, we can make a real difference. Please help.
