Dear Michael, Earlier this summer, we alerted you to a bill in the California State Assembly: AB 351, which reinstated physical education credit for JROTC, marching band, and cheerleading squads, among others. We succeeded in stopping this bill in the State Assembly, and we thank you for your efforts. Unfortunately, AB 351 is back. We need your help again. The bill's author, Mary Salas, has attached the original language of AB 351 to another bill, AB 1569, and the bill is on its way through the Senate Education Committee. Help us stop this end run to bring JROTC through the back door! Call Christine Kehoe (916) 651-4039 or (619) 645-3133 today to say you oppose AB 1569. We need to make JROTC a thing of the past. JROTC programs recruit youth under 18, and they've cost California taxpayers millions — $1 million from district funds in San Francisco alone, and nearly $2 million last year in Los Angeles. Defeating AB 1569 is key to winning the fight to get JROTC out of California schools. Protect the health of California's children by requiring real physical education. The California Teachers Association opposes AB 351 — now 1569 — because it grants physical education credit to classes without credentialed teachers, classes that don't meet state physical education curriculum standards.
