[SDCPJ] Youth Peace Education Enters 7th Year!

Dear Allies for peace and anti-militarism:

Please support local high school activism and help reach more youths!

Students, teachers, parents and activists around the county are taking stands against militarism in their schools.

Our high school leafleting committee is entering it's 7th year!  Last year we distributed over 16,000 flyers to high school students in the county.  Over the last 6 years we've distributed over 100,000 flyers.  This consistent effort has yielded untold rewards in the amount of students we may have convinced not to enlist.  We do know that it also yielded student activists at dozens of schools and a new coalition of students, teachers, parents and activists organizing under the Education Not Arms Coalition.  This coalition is active in the San Diego school district and has strategically helped move the issues forward.  It is important that we continue this work in order to educate students and support them in their organizing.  Here's a link to their actions www.projectyano.org/educationnotarms/.

This month we will leaflet students at as many schools as possible.  The leaflet will focus on:

1) Opt out forms - so students can get their names & contact info off the recruiters' lists that schools must give to the military under No Child Left Behind

2) Educating about future wars:  students will be lied to and lured into the military by recruiters stating that the Iraq war is going to be over by the time they get in etc.  We want to remind them of the fact that we are gearing up for more war in Afghanistan, Georgia, Iran..... etc...

3) Info to students about the fact that they can not be placed in JROTC without requesting it (tracking: this is happening at many school sites)

4) Educating about the weapons training going on at a majority of campuses with JROTC

Please help us reach students around the county the week of Sept. 15th.
Contact me at sjagitator@ucsd.edu with dates you are available and school locations you would be willing to leaflet.
I will follow up with details and info for your activist team.

Thanks for all you've done over the past 6 years.  Looking forward to working with you for a great year of peace education.
