[SDCPJ] Petition to Regents & UCSD - Stop the Che Eviction!

Friends,

UCSD has filed a lawsuit seeking to evict the Che Cafe. The trial date is now set for October 10, 2014 in San Diego.

We've started a new petition to "THE UCSD ADMINISTRATION AND THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA" to drop the eviction proceedings and return to the negotiating table. Each online signature will be sent to the UC Board of Regents, the UCSD Chancellor, the UC President, all of the UCSD Vice Chancellors, the University Centers Director, the Graduate Students Council, the Associated Students Council, and the University Centers Advisory Board. We want ALL of them to get thousands of emails to stop the eviction!

We need your help to get it off the ground.

Will you take 30 seconds to sign it right now? Here's the link:

You can sign our new petition by clicking here.

Then, please spread the word. Forward/post to your social media and email lists. Tell people. The UCSD Co-ops have won all the many fights with the administration in the past. We will win this one too, with your help.

Thanks!

[SDCPJ] National Call to Save Civilian Public Education draws prominent signers

A NATIONAL CALL: SAVE CIVILIAN PUBLIC EDUCATION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACTS:  Rick Jahnkow, Project YANO, TEL (760) 634-3604 and
Stephen McNeil, AFSC, TEL (415) 350-9305

A NATIONAL CALL: SAVE CIVILIAN PUBLIC EDUCATION

On the UN's International Day of Peace

SAN DIEGO AND SAN FRANCISCO  (September 21, 2014) – Nearly fifty educators, writers, and prominent activists on the United Nation's International Day of Peace have signed on to a national call to save civilian public education. From Noam Chomsky to Amy Wagner of New York City's YA-YA Network (Youth Activists-Youth Allies), signers are seeking to draw attention to developments in the educational system that could have disastrous long-term social and political consequences.

The national call introduction states:

Over the last several decades, the Pentagon, conservative forces, and corporations have been systematically working to expand their presence in the K-12 learning environment and in public universities. The combined impact of the military, conservative think tanks and foundations, and of corporatization of our public educational systems has eroded the basic democratic concept of civilian public education. It is a trend that, if allowed to continue, will weaken the primacy of civilian rule and, ultimately, our country's commitment to democratic ideals.

The signers of this statement believe it is urgent for all advocates of social justice, peace and the environment to recognize the dangerous nature of this problem and confront it with deliberate action. Signers include, among others, Bill Bigelow (Curriculum Editor, Rethinking Schools), Bill Branson (VVAW National Office), Hannah Frisch (Civilian Soldier Alliance), Tom Hayden (activist, author, teacher), Arlene Inouye (Treasurer, United Teachers of Los Angeles), Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) National Office, Isidro Ortiz (Professor, San Diego State University), Jesus Palafox (American Friends Service Committee, Chicago), Pablo Paredes (AFSC 67 Sueños), Joanne Sheehan (New England Regional War Resisters League) and Kristin Stoneking (Executive Director, Fellowship of Reconciliation USA).

The National Call suggests actions for foundations, organizations and individuals to take to implement the call. The campaign will run through the year, joining in on the International Week of Action for Military-Free Education and Research, October 25-31, sponsored by the Countering the Militarization of Youth project (http://www.antimili-youth.net/).

For publication purposes, the complete text of the National Call to Save Civilian Public Education can be requested in Word or plain text format.

Israeli Officer Charged for Beating of U.S. Teen

An Israeli police officer meanwhile has been charged with the beating of a Palestinian-American teenager that was caught on tape. Tariq Abu Khdeir was watching demonstrations in East Jerusalem when he was seized. The video shows him lying on the ground as the officers repeatedly beat him with batons.  He was left with facial bruises and severely swollen eyes and lips. [SDCPJ] FW: Demonstration Against Justice Scalia - Thu Sep 11 at 11:30 Downtown Embarcadero

Scalia: an Utter Moral Failure
US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia will be attending the California State Bar Convention that's being held in San Diego.  Justice Scalia will be there on Thursday, September 11.
Women Occupy San Diego and the San Diego Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild will demonstrate against the appearance  at 11:30 a.m. Hyatt Grand, 1 Market Place. The demonstration focuses on the Supreme Court's attacks on the rights of women, workers, minorities, and honest elections.
Organizer Kate Yavenditti, a member of both organizations, states:
"As a lawyer and a feminist, I am outraged that the State Bar would invite Justice Scalia to speak at our convention. Justice Scalia has equated homosexuality to murder and bestiality, has said the Voting Rights Act is a racial entitlement, has stated that mere factual innocence is no reason to overturn a death sentence, and has consistently voted against women's rights, most recently in the Hobby Lobby case."
The demonstration features the five Justices who voted for Hobby Lobby with their statements and also presents the Occupellas (of Women Occupy San Diego) with appropriate songs.
Where: At California State Bar Convention in San Diego; Hyatt Grand Hotel,
When: Thursday, September 11 at 11:30 am,
CONTACs: Kate Yavenditti, (619) 917-7971, Anne Hoiberg, (858) 245-1677

Scalia: An Utter Moral Failure

By Heather Digby Parton /  Salon-RSN / 08 September 14
He doesn't think executing an innocent man matters. How on earth can such a depraved human be on our Supreme Court?
While my views on the morality of the death penalty have nothing to do with how I vote as a judge, they have a lot to do with whether I can or should be a judge at all. To put the point in the blunt terms employed by Justice Harold Blackmun towards the end of his career on the bench, when he announced that he would henceforth vote (as Justices William Brennan and Thurgood Marshall had previously done) to overturn all death sentences, when I sit on a Court that reviews and affirms capital convictions, I am part of "the machinery of death."
My vote, when joined with at least four others, is, in most cases, the last step that permits an execution to proceed. I could not take part in that process if I believed what was being done to be immoral.
– Justice Antonin Scalia
One might wonder how he can stay on the court after the revelation last week that two convicted murderers he once described as lucky to be given the blessing of a lethal injection have turned out to be innocent. That's right, this is about the case everyone's been talking about — the two brothers, both mentally disabled, who were railroaded onto death row some 30 years ago with coerced confessions by a corrupt police department. As the New York Times reported:
The case against the men, always weak, fell apart after DNA evidence implicated another man whose possible involvement had been somehow overlooked by the authorities even though he lived only a block from where the victim's body was found, and he had admitted to committing a similar rape and murder around the same time.
The startling shift in fortunes for the men, Henry Lee McCollum, 50, who has spent three decades on death row, and Leon Brown, 46, who was serving a life sentence, provided one of the most dramatic examples yet of the potential harm from false, coerced confessions and of the power of DNA tests to exonerate the innocent.    Continue reading the article here
