[SDCPJ] North County Bradley Manning Support Rally -- Vista 4:30 p.m. Today! 7/30/13

For our North county members and friends:

BRADLEY MANNING support rally - VISTA 4:30 pm

  • VISTA, corner of So. Sana Fe Ave & Vista Village Dr
  • A BRADLEY MANNING support rally will be held in Vista today, July 30th, at 4:30PM at the corner of South Santa Fe and Vista Village Drive. This is the large vacant lot used by ENOUGH rallies.

This is in response to the handing down today of a grossly unjust VERDICT against Bradley.

Bring a home-made sign if possible. We will have a few extra signs and will need help with the large banner, which requires two people at a time.

Bring a Whistle also, to make some noise for our heroic Whistleblower. This is a high-traffic intersection with high visibility.

Parking is ample in the big empty lot. Entry into the lot is off North Indiana Street, which parallels South Santa Fe Ave.

[SDCPJ] Bradley Manning Verdict - Tuesday, 7/30, 5pm, Hillcrest

Manning Verdict - Riseup Rally
6th and University, Hillcrest, San Diego CA

Military Judge Col. Denise Lind to read verdicts on 21 charges against US Army WikiLeaks whistle-blower PFC Bradley Manning.

In an ominous sign for Manning, military judge Denise Lind altered important charges last week in order to assist prosecutors ahead of verdict. In so doing, defense attorney David Coombs explained, "The Government has pushed this case beyond the bounds of legal propriety. If the Government meant 'information', it should have charged information." Up until last week, Manning was charged with stealing entire databases. The Defense has no way to defend Manning against these new charges after the fact.

Army private Bradley Manning faces a potential life sentence for passing hundreds of thousands of classified military and diplomatic documents to the transparency website WikiLeaks, to expose U.S. criminality in its wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and further abuses around the world.

Never in the history of American military law has a person been charged with Article 104 of the Uniform Code of Military Law, "Aiding the Enemy," for providing information to the media in the public interest. However, Manning faces life in prison tomorrow if convicted of this charge alone—despite all evidence to the contrary.

[SDCPJ] This Wed 6:30 ~ Party with Nonviolence Connections

It's a Party!

  • Eat
  • Talk
  • Play
  • Learn about the people and groups here.
  • Browse books in the peace library.
  • Share your vision, your dream!

Join Ellie, Debby, Carroll, John and Allen for a party with:

  • Nonviolent Communication-San Diego,
  • Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP),
  • Nonviolent Peaceforce-San Diego, and
  • the Peace Resource Center.

Meet old friends and new, learn news of the four organizations. Bring your enthusiasm, curiosity, caring for the world, desire to do the right thing, and wish to express freedom!

Food and Games

We'll play some connection games and share some snacks

  • feel free to bring a snack or dish to share
  • but if you can't, please come anyway!

Spread love and peace, bring your friends, mingle for informal intellectual discussions that will take place around the snack table. Practice nonviolence techniques with fellow enthusiasts.  Practice communicating by role-playing when people react strongly against your nonviolent protesting.

We'll introduce our groups for 15 minutes.

Hear about how AVP works with prisoners, in our community, and throughout the world. Carroll recently returned from a trip to Nepal as a member of a Friends Peace Team that facilitated AVP workshops including Trauma Healing and has some interesting stories to tell. (If we ask really politely, maybe she will play the autoharp.)

Hear how Nonviolent Peaceforce San Diego supports the work of Nonviolent Peaceforce to spread the concept of Unarmed Civilian Peacekeeping throughout the world. NP's peace teams are doing groundbreaking peace work in Mindanao, Philippines and south Sudan. NP San Diego also works to promote nonviolence in our community through workshops and partnering with other nonviolence organizations.

Learn about Nonviolent Communications (NVC) activities in San Diego and Southern California.

See the Peace Resource Center (PRC), the new "green" building they are in, and what has changed this past year.

Collaborate, Create, Listen, Share:

What kind of events would you like? Introduce yourself and let us know. What personal gifts and talents are you inspired to express? How can we partner together and create new projects, using our unique skills?

Truly listen to one another, and learn about each other's differing ways of supporting nonviolence.Listen with openness and curiosity as a way to promote nonviolence within our own movement and our own relationships with each other. Let's learn from each other's different viewpoints and explore the diversity of our experiences and dreams.

Talk with others about nonviolence books you've read.

Share and learn about nonviolent direct action.

Carpooling

If you would like a ride, or would enjoy giving a ride and sharing the trip with someone else, we are setting up a carpool.

To find someone to carpool with, you can either email me, John and I will look for someone in your area.  (You can email me from the Members page above.)

Or, you can Post a message at the bottom on this page, and ask if anyone in the community wants to contact you to carpool, and indicate what part of the city you're wanting to carpool from.  Go to this page: http://www.meetup.com/Nonviolence-Connections/events/129201492/

So far, we have one person who would like to carpool from the San Diego/Mission Valley/La Jolla area.  Would you like to carpool with them?  Please let me know and I can put you in touch.

We Will Not Allow This

It saddens me to see this world where it is ok for 32,000 children to die everyday from preventable diseases.

It is a world where profits are more valuable than people, our families, our environment.

I know that it does not have to be that way. We are controlled by a small number of people, the equivalent of a passenger jet full, control us all.

Their greed, lack of compassion, tyranny, and evil MUST be checked. WE can do this by uniting and through non-violent means, achieve a more just, caring, loving world.

We are not going to allow them to deny us medial treatment just because of money.

We are not going to allow them to continue spending our treasure on war while our streets, bridges and schools fall into disrepair.

We are not going to allow them to continue to warehouse us in prisons and fake genuine justice.

We are going to stop the war on drugs and the war on the American people.

We are going to hold the judicial and legislative branches of government responsible for their constant quest for money and power when they were put into office to SERVE us, not victimize us.

We are going to take power back from corporations and MAKE them realize that our COMMUNITIES ARE more important than  profit.

We are not going to allow poverty in a world where there is plenty for all.

We are not going to allow pollution of our plant and food supply.

We are not going to allow the petroleum industry to block the development of clean energy sources.

We are not going to allow human rights to be rolled back to even more uncivilized times.

We demand justice, we demand accountability.

We demand the establishment of a Department of Love and Peace to have more power than a department of war.

We demand that America become a responsible world citizen instead of an extension of a tyrannical empire.

We demand ETHICAL behavior.

We demand the separation of church and state...corporation and state.

We demand peace with Syria, and The Middle East...no more war!

We demand equal treatment for Women, Men, Gay People and all races.

We demand the right for a woman to chose and actions to help assuage the need for women to get abortions.

We demand a war against poverty.

We demand that every working person be paid a living wage.

We demand and end to subsidies to large corporations.

We demand the end of the revolving door between government overseers and corporations.

We demand a just, true, compassionate government that understands its responsibility to protect its people.

Do any of you have the courage to join us in the fight?

We will win this fight.

We have launched a public information campaign to inform the public and monitor the acts of our officials.

We are planning non-violent actions that have worked in the past such as boycotts, buycotts and unity.

Help me help you.

Do not give up. I am committed to fair, hard hitting actions and the development of leadership that reflects compassion, love and intolerance for injustice.

[SDCPJ] Subject: Anti-militarist Web site recently updated

This is to let you know that NEW content has recently been posted at http://www.comdsd.org/, the Web site of the San Diego-based Committee Opposed to Militarism and the Draft (COMD).

The current update includes three articles from the latest issue of COMD's printed newsletter, Draft NOtices:

- "Patriotism and Propaganda — Superman: Man of Steel ," by Oskar Castro, explains how the latest Superman movie is being used for military recruitment ads.

- "Military Sexual Assault: It's the Culture," by GI rights counselor Kathy Gilberd, points out the reasons why this problem keeps getting worse and can't be solved with the government's current approaches.

- "Army Report Analyzes Decreasing Popularity of High School Military Testing," a summary by Paula Hoffman-Villanueva of key findings in a study that looks at why high schools are increasingly reluctant to give their students the military's ASVAB test. Included is a link to a new memo from the Rutgers School of Law criticizing violations of student privacy when the ASVAB test is given in schools.

In addition to the above three articles, the current printed version of Draft NOtices contains articles on several other topics and a form for students to opt out when schools release their names to recruiters. To order the complete printed version, visit the Web site's Draft NOtices page.

[SDCPJ] 1 Year Anniversary, SDVFP at General Atomics!

On Mon, Jul 22, 2013 at 7:28 PM, dave patterson <dpatterson998@yahoo.com> wrote:
Hi everyone
On Thursday August 15 we hit the 1 year mark at General Atomics in Poway.  We would like to make this a big event and so I ask that you plan on being there with us.

Time will be 4 to 6PM at General Atomics Way and Scripps Poway Parkway.

I will have a couple of hundred white crosses that we can place along the road with the Drone model hovering overhead.  For other ideas I was thinking we could wrap newspaper in bloodied sheets as well so it looks like a dead child.  If you have time to work on this idea, or some ideas that you have, we need you now!

August 15 is just over 3 weeks out and we need to get organized to make this successful.

Please pass this along to our Peace and Justice friends, as all are welcome.

Thanks again, and let me know if you are attending.

[SDCPJ] Mural Dedicated to Trayvon Martin

Mural Dedicated to Trayvon Martin

Al-Awda San Diego, The Palestine Right to Return Coalition, invites all
Al-Awda members, SJP members, the members of other sister organizations and
any human rights activists who wish to help with the painting of a mural
dedicated to Trayvon Martin and his family. Join us this Sunday July 21,
2013 at Al-Awda's Palestine National Center starting 10 am to 3 pm and be
part of the team that, together with the world-renowned Art Miles Mural
Project, will paint our Trayvon Martin mural.

Trayvon Martin was barely 17 years old when he was shot to death for
absolutely no reason other than profiling and racist suspicion based on the
color of his skin. Join us if you are as outraged as we are by this
unpunished crime. Such a crime is similar to that taking place every three
days in Palestine where a Palestinian child has been killed for the past 13
years by Israel simply because of their identity. We object and stand
opposed to such racism anywhere!

The completed mural will be delivered on behalf of our community to Trayvon
Martin's family. All materials needed to produce the mural will be donated
by The Art Miles Mural Project. Joanne Tawfilis, co-founder of The Art Miles
Mural Project and Al-Awda member, will be on hand to help with the artwork.

Our address is 2720 Loker Avenue West, Suite J, Carlsbad CA 92010

Join us this Sunday starting 10 AM
